Interview with Team Ninja
Tomonobu Itagaki Talks Ninja Gaiden
While most gamers didn't get to know the name "Team Ninja" until the release of the original Dead or Alive, Tecmo's leading R&D team has been around for years. And though it began as an arcade beat-'em-up, the Ninja Gaiden series is more famous for the three side-scrollers it begat on the NES, which were landmarks in the cinematic presentation of action games.
And now, closing in on some 15 years later, Ryu Hayabusa is back in his familiar environs. Though a Ninja Gaiden revival has been talked about for what seems like ages, it's definitely happening this time -- it's due out on Xbox before the end of this year. In the meantime, though, Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki took some time out to talk to GMR about his plans for Hayabusa's return, as well as what else the developer has in store.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GMR: The Ninja Gaiden series is revered by old-school gamers, but hardcore gamers don't make up the majority of the tens of millions of gamers around the world. Who is Ninja Gaiden (Xbox) designed for? A wider, mainstream audience, or for the hardcore gamer?
Itagaki: Ninja Gaiden for Xbox will have a higher difficulty level than what most people are probably used to from recent action games. However, this will not be an unreasonable or frustrating amount of difficulty; it will be very fair. Additionally, an extremely responsive and intuitive control system will urge the player on to further challenge the game. They might find it difficult at first, but as they play they will become surprised at their increasing ability to play well. We at Team NINJA have fought a constant struggle to create games that can be enjoyed by both hardcore and casual gamers during the development of the Dead or Alive series. We are fully utilizing this experience for Ninja Gaiden, as well.
GMR: How much does the new game owe to the classic Ninja Gaiden mythology? Besides the appearance of some signature weapons from the older games, did you adhere to any preconceptions, or is this entirely Team Ninja's vision?
Itagaki: The Ninja Gaiden trilogy on the NES (Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, and 3) told a complete story. Therefore, we have absolutely no intention of trying to add something on to that story to make a fourth installment. In the first place, "Gaiden" means "another story; a side story". We'd like long-time Ninja Gaiden fans to think of this new Xbox game as another "side story", different from the NES games. In addition, we want the current generation of young gamers to know the name Ninja Gaiden; to know it as the most impressive action game in the world, crafted with pride by us at Team Ninja.
GMR: Please tell us a little bit about Ninja Gaiden's heroine, Rachel. She wears a very provocative outfit.
Itagaki: Oh, is her outfit really that provocative...?
GMR: Does the player ever get to play as Rachel?
Itagaki: We're not really that interested in making supporting characters playable. Right now, we are simply focusing on making the movements and actions of our "Super Ninja" Ryu Hayabusa the coolest on the planet.
GMR: Who is the Japanese girl we see in the CG screens? Is she one of Hayabusa's clan? It seems like something's happening to her. Does this set up Ryu Hayabusa's motivation in the game?
Itagaki: She is the protector of the ancestral shrine of the Hayabusa Clan. The tragedy that has befallen her will drive Hayabusa into battle.
GMR: Who is the soldier with the cybernetic weaponry all over his body? Is he your main enemy in the game?
Itagaki: His name is Dynamo, Commander of the Vigoor Empire Mechanized Special Attack Team (MSAT). Of course, he will prove to be a very powerful opponent for Hayabusa.
GMR: Are there any DOA characters in Ninja Gaiden?
Itagaki: Ayane is in Ninja Gaiden. The story takes place before the events of the first Dead or Alive game -- two years before. Ayane at that time was 14 years-old, which should cause problems with the ESRB. (laughs) But since at that time she's not quite a ninja master yet, she serves as a messenger for Hayabusa. Actually she's a messenger to Hayabusa. She is part of the Mugen Tenshi Ryu society, and serving them, serves as a messenger to Hayabusa for what is to come.
GMR: Is Hayabusa part of the same clan?
Itagaki: No, he's part of a different clan, but the Mugen Tenshi Ryu is friendly with Hayabusa's society and are cooperative. So Ayane gets to witness Hayabusa like a student learns from a master. Maybe there's some kind of feeling between the two. She's not the most important character. Ryu Hayabusa is, plus there's another female heroine. The heroine is Rachel.
GMR: Is she Japanese? Rachel isn't a very Japanese name...
Itagaki: No. She is blonde.
GMR: Kind of like Kasumi on the U.S. packaging of DOA1 for PlayStation?
Itagaki: Ahhhhhh! That's a tragedy.
GMR: So do you see Raidou appear in Ninja Gaiden?
Itagaki: No, Raidou doesn't appear in Ninja Gaiden.
GMR: In the trailer you made for E3, who/what is the purple girl we see a glimpse of.
Itagaki: Did you see Ayane there? You're talking about a creature with big horns? That's the enemy creature, that isn't human. It's not really a pixie, but it's more like a magical demon with a tail.
GMR: Everyone who saw your Ninja Gaiden demonstration at E3 was amazed at how beautiful and fun the game looked. Does this surprise you? You'd think after each increasingly beautiful Team Ninja game, people would expect this by now. What do you hope Ninja Gaiden proves for you as a developer?
Itagaki: What we have achieved in Ninja Gaiden, what we can say with pride to the world is that we have created a true 3D action game. As you (James) already know, most full-3D action games have been ruined because of bad camera issues. Our camera engine has cleared all of the past hurdles with ease. With this exceptional camera engine and the motion engine borrowed from the DOA series supporting him, Hayabusa is able to move and act with a speediness and smoothness that is unprecedented in action gaming.
GMR: The original trailer showed a military base and helicopters, which is different to the new trailer which finds Hayabusa in the sewers. Can you explain how far you take him?
Itagaki: The sewer levels are almost at the middle of the game. The army base is an earlier stage, taking place before the sewers. This demo version is made specifically for E3, so where you saw the "Beam Me Up, Scotty" teleport scene, in the real game, toward the end you encounter the dragon zombie boss, which was actually shown at the end of last year's Ninja Gaiden trailer.
GMR: You've said that you're already planning the sequel to Ninja Gaiden. You've also said that Ninja Gaiden takes place before the first Dead or Alive tournament. Does this mean future Ninja Gaiden games might take place after the DOA tournaments have commenced? And does this also mean we might someday see a greater infusion of DOA-related elements in Ninja Gaiden?
Itagaki: We have already conceptualized an action game sequel. However, the main character has not yet been decided on. Of course, normally you would expect Ryu Hayabusa to be it, but who knows what will happen a year from now?
GMR: What do you think is the reason for such a renewed interest in ninjas? Of all the currently employed ninjas-Shinobi's Hotsuma, and Tenchu's Rikimaru -- what makes Ryu Hayabusa cooler than those guys?
Itagaki: That's quite a unique question! (smiles) We don't normally need to do a lot of explanation to make a clear distinction between Hayabusa and the others, but I will say one thing: Ryu Hayabusa is a "Super Ninja". We have given him every attribute that he needs in order to reign supreme as a Super Ninja. I can, however, comment a bit about Hotsuma from Shinobi, as I have been a fan of Revenge of Shinobi and Shadow Dancer since the days of the Genesis. Unfortunately, I couldn't follow Hotsuma all the way through his current round of adventures. Why? Because I kept falling in pits and dying! As for Rikimaru from Tenchu, I really don't know anything about him. I've never played the game, and I'm not really interested in it, either.
GMR: Speaking of Shinobi, Overworks' new game is called Kunoichi, a word commonly associated with Dead or Alive. How do you feel about their use of the word for their new game?
Itagaki: Games are not about titles. They're about what's in the game. Anyone who can't state that with absolute certainty can never make a game like Ninja Gaiden. Sega's Kunoichi is the same way. I want them to create a superb game that doesn't let itself be overshadowed by the title "Kunoichi."
GMR: A lot of gamers clearly enjoyed DOAX, but as fun as it is, perhaps many gamers didn't view it as a "serious" game. Do you think Ninja Gaiden marks your return as a "serious" game developer? And can any videogame compete with Ninja Gaiden this holiday season?
Itagaki: Trust me, Ninja Gaiden is as serious as they come! (smiles) It's not as if the atmosphere of the developers has changed; it's because the DOAX and Ninja Gaiden teams are different. The Kunai team is developing the Ninja Gaiden project, and the Kunoichi team did DOAX. Regarding other games, we don't believe there are any games right now that can compete with Ninja Gaiden. Our only opponents at the moment are ourselves, and the passage of time.
GMR: Considering how cool Ryu Hayabusa feels fighting with a katana and nunchaku, have you ever considered making a weapons-based fighting game? I know you don't like Namco, and since DOA already kicks Tekken's ass, it would be fun to see you kick the ass of "the sword fighting game". Any interest?
Itagaki: To be honest, I'm sick and tired of all these recent cheap multi-platform games. They take data coded for low-end machines, sprinkle a bit of anti-aliasing on top, and try to pass the thing off as an Xbox game. I would never do that kind of work, at least. I don't have nearly enough time on my hands to spend wasting it on that kind of lazy development. We don't need any weapons in order to shut up the game that you have mentioned. DOA Online will be more than sufficient. DOA Online is being designed as an Xbox-native game. We are redesigning all of the graphical data in order to squeeze every last drop of potential out of this machine. Our programmers have been spending plenty of time happily working on the visuals in DOA Online; as a result these images have a precision, beauty, and level of interactivity truly worthy of the Xbox. I think your readers only need look at the screenshots in this magazine to understand that. To us, "Only on Xbox" is not just a business pitch. It is the mark of games that posses the extreme level of quality only possible on Xbox, the most powerful console of our time.
GMR: How many different secondary weapons does Hayabusa have?
Itagaki: At least three or four different shurikens, and three or four different kind of arrows, and we're still in the process of adding more so it's not finalized yet. I can tell you the difference of shurikens though. Regualr shurikens, and exploding shurikens, and Fu-Ma shurikens, which is a legendary item from the last Ninja Gaiden from the SNES. It's very big and when you throw it it acts like a boomerang shuriken.
GMR: That should make old-school fans happy.
Itagaki: We also have normal arrows, fire arrows and some other different arrows. We are still designing new arrows.
Itagaki: For the E3 version, the controls are jump, primary weapon, secondary weapon, the Y-button is "ninjutsu," Hayabusa move, guard, and Z-camera (centers the camera behind Hayabusa). After E3 though, I plan to change the system. Right now we can mount two weapons, but I feel like two weapons isn't enough, so I want to add a third weapon. I think we should have three attacks, but don't tell anyone. That's a secret.
GMR: Tell me something cool about Ninja Gaiden that I have forgotten to ask.
Itagaki: We have tweaked the control system in the past few days based on the opinions that we got from people who played it at E3. In other words, it has now come another step further from what you saw at E3. I think that Ninja Gaiden has become even more fantastic because of this new control system. Thanks a lot for your playtesting, Mielke! You just wait until you get a chance to play it again!
GMR: Lastly, will Ryu have any secret DOA costumes (or others) hidden in his closet once you beat the game?
Itagaki: Actually, I am looking more towards the early NES Ninja Gaiden series rather than DOA; I would like to add a lot of features to the game as homage to the earlier series. That is why I am going back and playing the old NES games right now.
