sinister agent - February 26, 2008 02:01 PM (GMT)
Yeah, well... I'm going to play Denied Ops now, so nerr.

Curiosity - February 26, 2008 02:04 PM (GMT)
Where do they get their energy from?

Zardoz - February 26, 2008 02:05 PM (GMT)
Hit a brick wall with it at the moment. Level 15? the one with the Walking fortress shooting up the city. Gnnnnnnn

If that's the one where you keep getting bloody trampled underfoot (literally), that's where I got bored and found something else to play.

Just wait till you see some of the later levels. :) I think the one that's annoying me most is the one which starts out as one set of oncoming insects - once wiped out, you then get another two sets - one from either side. I think there's possibly three sets after that but I don't usually get that far after being utterly bogged down with spider webs. I don't remember having too much trouble with it on the normal difficulty level but 'hard' is er, hard.

I actually have no idea what the thread is really about.

jonarob - February 26, 2008 02:39 PM (GMT)
I remember being overwhelmed by an early level with loads of spaceships to shoot down. I was thinking "this is bloody impossible", but I just kept shooting them down and eventually they were all gone. I might have to play this when I get in from work.

Runcle - February 26, 2008 02:43 PM (GMT)
Online co-op would have been excellent in this game.

The most annoying missions are the ones where you have to clear out the nests, you start off with multiple squads and then within 5 minutes you're the only bugger cleaning the mess up.

Though to be fair that is the story with most of the missions.

On some of the later levels, you certainly notice the advantage of keeping the other blokes alive, even if only to draw attention away from yourself. Obviously helps if you don't blow them all up with a few stray rockets though. Ahem.

Strategically placing the ZE Guns (sentry guns) is the key to this one. They are brilliant at holding their own. Point them at one group, and you at the other.

I mean, that's where I heroically found the controls COMPLETELY UNWORKABLE and turned off EDF in RIGHTEOUS FURY, which is totally different.

Morte - February 26, 2008 02:58 PM (GMT)
I've never used the ZE Guns. Can they be redeployed once you have cleaned up a certain area?

Lave - February 26, 2008 03:00 PM (GMT)
Also the voice acting on this is, no joke, the best voice acting in a game ever.

Yes it's b movie grade corny nonsense. But it actually makes me love the guys. And carries me over on a tide of wooping and joy.

"EDF EDF EDF EDF!"

"Why don't you go back home. To Space!"

And their converstations rock too:

"You look worried, are you scared?"
"No. Shut up!"

And there is hours of it.

You get three, and after a while they run out of ammo and go poof. Then you have to suffer reloading which takes FOREVER. And you can go again.

I love them.

Well I figured out you shoot its 'belly button', then mop up its robotic bastard squads before shooting out its red lasers. Maybe I just need to replay a few earlier levels to beef myself up a bit.

And not be a pussy.

One of the tunnel levels features the line "We're on an exciting underground expedition!" which always makes me laugh.

Anyway, how the flip is anyone finding EDF difficult? I played it through on Normal in order and completed every level first time except 51. And Hard wasn't much more difficult due to the weapons I picked up playing normal.

I've gone back and done Easy now (which was deathly dull) and farmed most of the top-level weapons from Level 40 Inferno in preparation for Hardest, but I'm not sure how far I'll get as I'm beginning to tire of it. I certainly can't see me completing Inferno.

Because I'm obviously a friend of Dorothy.

I'm playing through on Normal (apart from the odd level on hard) and some I've found very easy but others are a pain in the arse. Maybe it's the weapons, or lack of that I've mustered.

Man! Is RLLMUK missing two idiots today or something?

CornerUnitSofa - February 26, 2008 03:46 PM (GMT)
We're idiots for not liking something you do? Might as well call us dicks whilst you're at it.

Probably for the best, to be honest.

But: anyone who says EDF is not amazing, is wrong.

CheapSheep - February 26, 2008 03:52 PM (GMT)
No, I just dislike a game most other people seem to love. Thankfully, such things are subjective, so I don't feel it reflects too badly on my intelligence.

It's a shame I didn't get on with EDF, and heaven knows I did try, but generally I consider myself to have good taste in games, so I won't lose sleep over it.

jonarob - February 26, 2008 04:04 PM (GMT)

Dunno how similar to the PS2 version it is, but the ruined city levels are like that - there's nothing to get in the way of the onslaught, so they overwhelm you from all sides.

Terminal slowdown to a couple of frames a second sets in way before you die, 'though.

The only way to do these appeared to be to find a vehicle, drive a long way away, get out and snipe.

And by 'snipe', I mean with a rocket or grenade launcher.

Ah yes that was brilliant.

As is
"Oh no! The new recruit has died!"
and
"I don't like you, but we'll have to work TOGETHER!"

The idea of movie clichés playing out in the background kills me.

Also: It's a shame your character seems to drink a bottle of Gin whilst waiting for the Helicopters blades to spin up though.

This is better though. RE is just 'so bad it's good.'

Where EDF is so sincere it's good. In the way that only true B Movies can be.

I was even quite moved at the end:

QUOTE
Everyone else is dead, we are on our own, this will be EDFs last battle. But we'll show em that the EDF never runs away from a fight!!"

It was more emotional than most 'proper' dialogue.
