| when i was at university amongst the meagre selection of obvious arcade machines (puzzle bobble, sega's decathlete, a star wars pinball machine) was something i hadn't seen before and haven't seen since. it was a simple 3D space shooter, kind of like an arcade version of the combat part of elite. i can't remember much about it except: - it was a first person perspective thing - the graphics were simple polygonal spaceships, solid-shaded and colourful - the controls were... well, i guess a joystick to point, but also (definitely) a big thrusting lever thing, like you might get in train driving sims, which made you go forward or backwards and had a red button on one side of the handle. - i was the best. until some nerds (spit) discovered a cheat code and clocked the fucker. this might be the only game i'm good at apart from lumines. i need to find it! |

| 1) it seems to predominantly multiplayer -- this was definitely a single player, standalone experience 2) the mission structure seems too complex. i just remember entering the game and shooting a lot of things, maybe with galaga / robotron style waves. i also thought i remembered the hacked score being '999', ie the scoring was probably measured in kills or at least v low figures 3) this (again) SEEMS to be sprite based and i'm fairly sure the thing i'm faintly remembering was polygon based all that said, i do find the screen at the top of http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9674 with the hands on it pretty evocative. i think because it's making me remember how the lever felt to throw forward and backwards in times of EXTREME CRISIS. and the name seems... well, not familiar, but again i have this tiny residual memory that the game name was something hopelessly generic LIKE that. there are vague references to a sequel around the internet but i'm not exactly convinced it exists. no screenshots i can see, at least. |
