An Amiga 1200. UAE is nice, but I want a real Amiga.
Thank you for listening.

What are you going to do in order to achieve your aim of Amiga ownership?

Oh wonder if you can hook the flash card to your pc to stick a bunch of downloaded games onto it.

I'm almost positive you could.
thr0b - March 3, 2009 10:05 AM (GMT)
You could, but you'd have to do it through UAE, as Windows can't read FFS drives.

Don't get too excited...
My family had an Amiga 1200 from '93 onwards. About '96 we got a hard drive (twenty meg...I think...) and a four meg expansion card. If I can find it, and if it still works, I should be able to organise something.
I'll be heading over to my parents' house this weekend for unrelated troughing; I'll have a sneak around then.

I threw an A1200 in a dumpster last week, you could of had that. It's not hard to get an A1200 though, there's seven or so on eBay right now.
VinylPusher - March 3, 2009 06:49 PM (GMT)
Sadly, I fell out with eBay some years ago when I refused to pay listing fees for an auction which I had to re-list twice due to one attempted fraud and one non-payer (an ultimately unsuccessful auction). I'm now no longer allowed to have an account with eBay.
Sometimes I get mad because I would like to buy things from eBay sellers.
@Xeethra: I would be your bestestest friend ever if you came up trumps! Do let me know, and we'll talk about cash :) :D
@Tom: Double d'oh! But... c'est la vie.
sinister agent - March 3, 2009 07:11 PM (GMT)
I have one. Its hard drive is knackered (and, I think, removed), but otherwise it was working a year ago. Should be still. I can also throw in a lot of games. Syndicate, Wing Commander, Cannon Fodder 1 and 2, Theme Park, Colonisation, Civilisation, etc. Plus a bajillions and pirated games.
I was a kid, alright? My dad know a bloke, I didn't know any different. 'sides, I was still buying them well into the late 90s.
VinylPusher - March 3, 2009 07:33 PM (GMT)
@sinister
I plan on installing one of those fabulous compact flash cards in place of a hard drive, as I absolutely loved the fact that my old Amiga was perfectly silent... until the HD span up when someone called my BBS (yes, I was *that* geeky).
If you can bear to part with it, I could give your miggy a good home. I wouldn't be so much interested in the games (I've already got a DVD collection containing every piece of Amiga software ever released). I've got just about everything I need to get going except for an actual A1200 and compatible mouse!
I've even got one of the original miggy->VGA adapter cables. Deep joy
sinister agent - March 3, 2009 07:44 PM (GMT)
I have hoarded it and two A500s for well over a decade, but there's really no point in keeping them seeing how little I use them. And I've had to move house six hundred thousand times and am getting sick of finding room for them, to be honest. I'll dig it out at the weekend, don't worry about cash, just cover my postage and we'll call it even.
VinylPusher - March 3, 2009 08:02 PM (GMT)
How about I cover your postage *and* give you a kiss?
No?
*sigh*
My life remains empty

If you have the 500s in the same place a spare one of those would be awesome to give my amiga collection one last go on the real hardware.
I shall have to PM vinyl pusher about doing what he does at some point.
VinylPusher - March 3, 2009 08:24 PM (GMT)
I rather suspect that getting ADF files off a DVD and on to a compact flash via UAE to then transfer to an A1200 with one of those fangled IDE->CF adapters is the only way to go.
Trying to get an ADF onto a real Amiga disk to feed into an A500 would require some real jiggery pokery. Catweasel is a name that springs to mind.
keyboardandmouseheadshot - March 3, 2009 08:48 PM (GMT)
If you fancy giving it a clean up:
http://retr0bright.wikispaces.com/Also, there is a thingy you can download for the PC that lets you read/write directly to amiga disks, you need 2 floppy drives (need to be internal ones, usb ones aren't suitable). Not sure how it works. And I can't remember where you download it. Sorry, that wasn't much help.

Nah no need for adfs for me, I wanna give my real A500 game collection (wich is huge and only has 4 copys!) a last hurrah before it all rots away. Megadrive controllers and friends and alchohol!
sinister agent - March 3, 2009 09:26 PM (GMT)
I have a 500 and 500+, and a 1Mb RAM thing that I swapped between them. The majority of games work on both, though the 500 is almost as old as I am (3,200 years), has a few minor buttons missing, and looks revolting. The top is a bit melted from where a vaporiser fell on it and discoloured it as well. The + and 1200 are as far as I know in good condition. I'll want to shift the games if I'm going to shift the machines, so I may just throw a pile in with them all if it's all the same with you.
Dr_Octagon - March 3, 2009 09:33 PM (GMT)
Fine by me:) Nothing wrong with a few doubles. I dont have many old old games so I may go with the 500+
Xeethra - March 3, 2009 09:45 PM (GMT)
Looks like everyone's a winner...
I'll have a rummage anyway; if my battered memory is firing correctly then the last mouse I had for the 1200 needed its buttons replacing. I did so with a redundant zip-stick fire button and gaffer tape. A good excuse for nostalgia...and a reason to interact less with my family should I need it.
McM - March 3, 2009 10:01 PM (GMT)
Back in the late 90s, I was grabbing ADFs of games I missed at uni and using them on my A1200 -- I did it using a zip drive formatted as FAT, and reading it on the Amiga then writing to a real floppy (or in the cases of games that were hd-installable, using mountlists and a device driver from aminet to mount the image and install...).
Could also be done with floppies, in a more painful way -- if you go that route, you'll want to look into DMS (Disk Masher System) to try and compress the disk images to make 'em fit on a 720K disk.
Oh, I also had an HD floppy drive for the Amiga. That helped a bit too when I didn't have the (borrowed) zip drive.

I'm hoping to avoid needing floppies. Should be able to mount the CF from within UAE, format it and then transfer straight to the real A1200.
I remember having an 80MB hard drive for my A1200. The biggest HD I ever plugged into an Amiga was 1.6GB. a 4GB CF is going to be luxury.
**EDIT**
I may try out a little gizmo I've just seen, an SD to CF adapter. I've got a spare 1GB SD card I could use. Would make transferring files easier as my laptop has got a built-in SD reader, whereas the only CF reader I've got is in my Dell monitor, which is attached to my bedroom wall.
romanista - March 4, 2009 08:31 AM (GMT)
currently using a cd32 and a few of those 200 in one discs for all mhy amiga needs, and since swos on Xbla i haven't booted my real a500
floppy's are being used by my son to play with

Hello Mr Sinister Agent, sir. I was merrily wondering if you'd been able to locate your old A1200?
I'm like a kid 1 week before Christmas, wanting to make sure his parents completely understand the exact present that is most desired.
I really ought to get out more :ph43r:

How goes the hunt?
Xeethra - March 12, 2009 09:54 AM (GMT)
Due to unforeseen circumstances I've been a lot busier than expected (I'm at my sisters until tomorrow when I'm off to London for good food and friendship). I have seen the Amiga itself but not had a chance to find the cables or test the fellow. The old beast did get a mention in familial conversations over the weekend though; everyone's happy for it to be rehoused with a loving owner.

Heh...I've been the recipient of some Birmingham hospitality over the last few days (my sister said, upon seeing my face, 'That's making me feel unwell') and generally had the most turbulent week of my life. Whatever the hell happens in the capital won't be too jarring a contrast.
The upshot being that, over the next few weeks, the family home will be renovated and anything that's primary function has being keeping dust off the floor will be forcibly rehomed. Does anyone want a chest freezer? Or, to veer dangerously close to topic, an A1200?
sinister agent - March 12, 2009 06:32 PM (GMT)
For my part, I am drafting an essay, a local rag article and a proposal for a new local radio programme, so it's going to have to wait until the weekend. Sorry!
Nirejhenge - March 12, 2009 08:54 PM (GMT)
I still have a 1200 with 040 card and 8MB (or is it 16?) of Ram and a 16 bit prelude soundcard. I also have the surf Squirrel but it doesn't seem to work. I have a 1.4GB hard drive full of fairly important stuff in it but I don't know if it still works. I hope so. I've also got the remains of about 5 others.
VinylPusher - March 12, 2009 10:05 PM (GMT)
I want my old Amiga 1200 back. It was a thing of beauty.
An 030 with FPU. 16MB RAM. I did have a surf squirrel (purely for the serial port) but then discovered I had a reasonably rare Amiga 1200 that (when I upgraded the roms to 3.1) could manage top speeds (11500?) through the built-in serial port. Most couldn't and would give random errors.
16MB of RAM was heaven, back then. I could load up just about every app I could ever care to use and still have plenty free.
Oh God, how in hell did Windows become king?
McM - March 12, 2009 11:06 PM (GMT)
I know it was rhetorical, but ... Ubiquity.
Whenever you have competing technologies, the winner generally has little to do with it being the best tech[1] though. Marketing's generally way more important than what's in the box.
[1] It's arguable that the Amiga[2] was the best by the early-mid 90s, but that's another discussion :)
[2] I was a fanboy[3] back then, but hopefully I've gained some maturity in the intervering 20 or so years.

Not to put too fine a point on it but...
*bump*
I've fired up my old desktop, attached a CRT monitor and have cleared a little Amiga 1200 sized space on the desk next to it. :P
Dr_Octagon - March 20, 2009 06:46 PM (GMT)
And I'd like to add any left amigas that work I'll be super interested in :)
sinister agent - March 21, 2009 12:35 AM (GMT)
Unfortunately Iw as unable to post this before I went out at the liast minute. After a stupidly busy two weeks, today was quiet, and this weekend was set to be one of relacing and fun. I got in, and heard that the landlord had visited (without warning, of course, the cunt). He had taken a load of stuff from the garage that 'belonged to the last tenants'.
He took the amigas, of course. I wish I was making this up.
I've called him all nice like and heard nothing. If he hasn't told me when he's bringing them back by tomorrow night, I'm telling him that if they're not back by tuesday I'll call the police.
On the plus side, I had salmon tikka as a starter tonight. It was fucking lovely.

Yes, I know. I've decided it's much more fun simply not paying rent until he stops doing it, though, and up until today it was the only thing that worked.

Is it me, or are landlords, companies, the guvment and generally just about anyone with whom you are the front part of a 'customer-supplier' relationship becoming more cunt-tastic as time wears on?
1. Npower were cunts to me recently. Chasing me for a 'leccy bill from a pre-paid token meter I finished using 2+ years ago and then, as soon as I paid that (for a reduced sum), chasing similarly for a pre-paid smart-card gas meter at the same property.
2. My mate/landlord is tight on cash so I kind-of had to pay a good portion of my rent early, meaning that the £200 I was going to pay to my credit card now hasn't been. This ensures I get maximum interest (at approx 40% APR) though, thankfully, I wont have any late payment penalties.
3. I'm temping. Doing 37.5 hours per week at £7.50 per hour. The company I work for were going to take me on some weeks ago. First they offer me £7.00 per hour for a more demanding and responsible role and then some analyst guy comes in and tells them "Don't take anyone else on to your books until you've got a plan of where you're taking the business", so the offer is withdrawn. I'm still temping though, so that's some consolation.
4. I have had a seriously bad run of luck with women. Slightly irrelevant, but I'm narked about it nontheless.
