Title: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Description: on DS

Anyone got any inside news on this, whether it's likely to be any good?
Due out 20th March

The only thing I know about it is that I just mis-read the topic title as "Grand Theft Auto: Christian Wars", bringing about the curious image of Stephen Green bombing around town and shooting people who do things he does not approve of.
Like having other opinions.

I must admit, after the travesty of GBA GTA, another top-down Grand Theft Auto doesn't fill me with hope, especially when it contains annoyances like touch-screen "hotwire the engine" sub-games every time you pinch a car. I genuinely hope I'm wrong, though.

the EG-preview got my hopes up though, looking forward too it

Well it's available at the usual places now. Doesn't work on my R4, comes up with save data error. Might have to get a DSTT off DX for $6.14
RevMarzikins - March 15, 2009 12:54 AM (GMT)
I'll try and see if it works with YSMenu.

It doesn't work with the vast majority of flash-carts at the moment (only a couple of the more obscure older ones apparently such as the AceKard 1).
No doubt there will either be patched version or software updates from the flash-cart developers over the next few days that will rectify that.

There's a patch out for it now. I've played it for a few hours and already I've enjoyed it more than GTAIV. You don't even have to bother with the story to have fun. Safehouses can be bought for cash, and cash can be earned easier through drug trading than through missions.

If anyone sees this or the new Fire Emblem for sub-£15 please add it to bargains, cheers!

It's 17.99 on both Play and Amazon, which isn't too shabby and not too far off 15 quid.

Thanks smac! I shall mull over whether my one man mission to reduce DS RRP to £15 should be set aside for turn-based/car-stealing action.

I like the way they've made it a specific DS iteration rather than a shoe-horn port. Technically it's very impressive and I'm enjoying it, definitely a bit more arcadey and fun than some previous versions. I must confess to being bored now of the GTA premise and its "we're so adult and stuff" mannerisms. Wearing a little thin for me.

even cyclods users can obtain a sneak preview these days, i noticed

it is far better than i anticipated, it really fits perfectly to the DS and i even like the style (cartoony) than the 'too serious' GTA4 look. it really is like having an organised crime simulator in your pocket, especially with the dopewars mini game inside it..

How like the original PS GTA's is it? Cause if it's at all reminiscent of those, I'd be tempted to sell some gear just to get a Lite to play this on.
Tael - March 17, 2009 08:51 AM (GMT)
I've finished off the story missions today. The worst story missions aren't as bad as some of GTAIV's missions. Also, the final mission actually lets you skip an entire segment if you fail towards the end. For my efforts, I've been rewarded with the ability to buy a tank from the auto dealer.

I played it for five minutes last night. It's certainly quite pretty and seems quite smooth. I fear the camera might make me ill though. It seems fairly typical modern GTA so far. Which means it isn't as good as GTA 2.

it's a modern gba, but it seems to take itself a bit less seriously than gta4, and it has so much improved control to the earlier ones, it might be the bes,t but it is early days

I loved 2 on DC, would still be my fave if it'd had a proper save system.

was the dc version very different from the ps one?

Just a lot smoother and more colourful with far better lighting effects IIRC.

Man, I succumbed, despite promising myself I would cut down on the game-buying for a couple of months.
After getting Chrono Trigger at the 15 quid misprice, I thought Play would put this at 24.99 like all the full-price games, for sure. I'd have gone for it at 20 quid, so the couple of quid extra off was a bonus. Probably them and Amazon having a bit of a price war on a high-profile title. Fine by me.
It does look like the developers put some DS love into this one; looking forward to getting my mitts on it.

Ack. Seeing the screenshots, and talk of 'amazing for the DS' did push me towards assuming it'd be like the two 'Tony Hawk's' games I've got - gorgeous, great fun, but marred by making my brain feel like it's collapsing in on itself. Significant actual pain rather takes away from the experience.
xbendystevex - March 19, 2009 05:15 PM (GMT)
Goodness I'm having a lot of fun with this. I've spent hours drug dealing and hardly any of the story missions so far!
