Title: Firefox or Internet Explorer?
Description: It's as simple as that

RevStu - January 21, 2009 08:58 AM (GMT)
Just wanted to check, really. I've always assumed that WoS readers were savvy types who used Firefox, but since IE is statistically still the biggest by a long way I thought I should check. The two browsers have some minor but irritating inconsistencies, and until now I've generally optimised WoS features for Firefox, but if most people are still using IE then I should probably rethink that policy.

Howard - January 21, 2009 09:02 AM (GMT)
I voted Firefox as that's what I use at home, but at work it's still IE.

Grim... - January 21, 2009 09:13 AM (GMT)
Do you not have any analytical stuff (like Google Analytics or Woopra) that will tell you?

RevStu - January 21, 2009 09:15 AM (GMT)
My ISP stats will probably tell me which browser is used most by general visitors, but I specifically want to know which one forum viewers use, since they're the readers I care most about.

Tom Camfield - January 21, 2009 09:23 AM (GMT)
Thanks Stu, Safari for me (Mac). I wonder if Romanista uses the same.

jonarob - January 21, 2009 09:29 AM (GMT)
Firefox. You'll find that most people here use Firefox, because as you said, they're tech savvy. It's the masses who use IE. According to Google Analytics, 80% of Snappy Gamer users are running Firefox, which says a lot.

The company I work for it's more like 80% IE because most of our visitors are morons.

Safari for me (Mac).

Yay - me too.

thr0b - January 21, 2009 09:43 AM (GMT)
Safari is excellent, especially once you have added Ad-Block, Safari Stand and Inquisitor.

yup he does, but for work wos-viewing i only can use IE

sut, if you optimise for firefox, with the things you do, safari will be good to, so you can add them up if you want..

yup, but those with a 9-5 job will probably use some ie as well at work, why work-tech people are so shy to use firefox...

@throb, what is inquisitor?

jonarob - January 21, 2009 10:05 AM (GMT)
Good point, Rick. I have every browser installed on my work PC, so it's a lucky dip from me!

Not really, I use Firefox for surfing, the rest for testing.

Steve S - January 21, 2009 11:12 AM (GMT)

Like a few people I suspect, Firefox at home but IE at work (like now). Ancient version of IE too.

Malc - January 21, 2009 12:01 PM (GMT)
firefox at both work and home (only cos I installed it at work mind)

Inquisitor is this.

Allows you to use different default search engines from Safari which on its own is restricted to google.com. Also makes suggestions and the like from the search bar as you type.

It is terrific.

Cobracure - January 21, 2009 12:53 PM (GMT)
Firefox, I'd never go back to IE.

Diogo Ribeiro - January 21, 2009 01:15 PM (GMT)
I used Firefox a lot for a while, but after my latest Windows install, I've stuck with IExplorer. No complaints so far, really, but if the site is going to be optimized for Firefox I may consider using it again.

Marc - January 21, 2009 04:30 PM (GMT)
I can't say I've even noticed the difference... am I a retard? They both appear to do the same job as far as my limited use of the internet goes.

Anonymous X - January 21, 2009 04:51 PM (GMT)
I've only ever used Safari as my web browser.

Firefox, but if the other Mac using WoSers like Safari so much maybe I'll try that!

VinylPusher - January 21, 2009 05:53 PM (GMT)
Opera. Firstly because of mouse gestures but then (after I got a mouse with a swathe of buttons, two of which serve as 'back' and 'forward' in all web browsers) because it's jolly nippy, lightweight and less targeted by malware oiks.

Rob M - January 21, 2009 06:36 PM (GMT)
Not a shining endorsement, and I use Camino for most Mac-o-stuff, but for uninteresting reasons Safari is my WoS-window.

Xeethra - January 21, 2009 07:02 PM (GMT)
A little trend-bucking by using Firefox on the company's steam-powered Pentium II as IE seems to crash or jam up the micro-abaci. I use Wii Opera at home (haven't managed that for a while; too much Xboxery) due to not owning a PC.

Safari is excellent, especially once you have added Ad-Block, Safari Stand and Inquisitor.

Might I enquire as to where you can get such add-ons?

(searches turn up pay-for junk)

@ Ian Osborne: Top Gun style high five.

@ throb: thanks!

@ Anonymous X, what's the Bub (or Bob) icon on the dock stand for? Cheers.

Safari Stand - http://hetima.com/safari/stand-e.html
Installing this is a bit involved; you need to download both Stand and SIMBL, which he links to.

AdBlock: http://safariadblock.sourceforge.net/

And Inquisitor: http://www.inquisitorx.com/safari/index_en.php

Molloy - January 22, 2009 01:31 AM (GMT)
I've tried a myriad selection of different browsers but somehow I still prefer IE. Firefox takes three times as long to boot and the way it loads pages just irritates me somehow. If the images don't have defined dimensions they jump about the place while it's loading. Yeah, I know IE is targeted more by spyware but I have antivirus software and a couple of spyware/adware programs which protect me from it. Most webpages is designed for IE. There was one version of Firefox, I think the original 3.0 which was incredibly crashy as well. That put me off that for quite a while.

I really like Google Chrome. If it had an RSS reader I'd seriously consider switching. The minimal interface is the business. The only thing I don't like is the loading progress bar at the bottom pops on and off when it's in use. Gets on my nerves.

edit: haha.. I just worked out why I don't like Firefox by using it for a few minutes there. I have a wierd tick where whenever I read text on a computer I highlight it and unhighlight it alternatively every paragraph or so. It's just easier on my eyes because alot of pages have poor contrast and it strains my crappy eyesight. In IE the colours are inverted so you can read 'white on black' text. In Firefox everything is highlighted in a beige, grey or neutral type of colour.

I use Firefox and I get the inverse effect you describe for IE. Maybe it's something to do with your setup?

It's Adium, although I've downloaded an extra Dock icon to replace the standard duck. :)

Thanks for the links anyway.

Another thing for Safari users; not tested myself, but I will be testing it shortly. Adds some nice features.

Left/Right mouse buttons for going back and forward is something I always miss when I attempt to use other browsers.

Hold right mouse button, and click left to go back, the inverse to go forward.

RevStu - January 27, 2009 12:35 PM (GMT)
Not here (Firefox 3.0.5) it doesn't. And I presume you can't be talking Mac, as Mac mice only have one button AFAIK.

Malicious Afterthought - January 27, 2009 12:36 PM (GMT)
I've got 3.0.5 and it does. honest.

Do I need to switch a setting somewhere?

Lasermink - January 27, 2009 02:04 PM (GMT)
I am using Firefox, but I suspect I will switch to Chrome as soon as it gets a release for Linux, because I am getting mighty tired of Firefox 3 crashing. Although I do love the Firebug plugin for web development. So I'll probably end up using both, then.
