Title: Resident Evil 5 Demo
Description: Anyone given it a go?

jonarob - December 8, 2008 06:32 PM (GMT)
If you torrent the Japanese demo and burn it to a DVD, you can play it from your Demos menu in the 360.

Anyway, it's, er... Every bit as annoying as I thought it would be. The controls are awkward and Chris is blocking a third of the screen with his huge hulking body. And enemies take around 10 bullets to bring down, ammo is scarce, reloading causes you to stand still and painstakingly refill your weapon with ammo often causing death because you can't cancel a reload if something attacks you.

It looks nice, though.

I tried it and loved it!

Here's my post on Rllllllllllmuk:

The last Resident Evil game I played was 3, I missed out on 4 because I had sold my Gamecube for some reason. So, I was quite looking forward to this until I played it. Put me in the 'fucking hell, these controls are terrible' camp, gentlemen.

It was late though and I didn't spend too much time with it. Here's my playthrough:

"Ooooh, it works!"
"Ooooh, it's pretty"
"Hang on, I need to move these bookcases"
"Die, motherfucker"
"Hnnnnnnngh"
"Arrrgh, fucking turn!"
"Get out the way you fucking, stupid cow!"
"Hnnnnngh"
"Fucking... run... no, turn... no... fuck"
*Waggle sticks*
*Press B to rescue your bumbling, cretinous, moron of an AI buddy*
*Waggle Sticks*
"I wonder if Sexcetera is on now"
"Ah-ha, higher ground"
"Get out of the fucking way, bitch"
"Aieeeeeee"
*Big fat axe man fucks my shit up and kills Sheva. At which point I shake his hand, give him a knowing nod and offer him tea and crumpets*

I'm shit at this game and I hate the controls (duh). I give it 9 out of 10 to save Edge the trouble of reviewing it.

That sounds about right. I just don't understand why Capcom always make their games so difficult to play. Dead Rising is possibly one of my favourite games EVER, but it angers me so much.

Hopefully this will wind up just as good once you get used to the awkward backwards controls, but I'm not sure I can pull any more hair out.

everything that made RE4 so great then :)

How do you do this?

http://www.mininova.org/tor/2068640

Just burn the unrarred files to a dvd? That's it?

Troublegum - December 8, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
The rar files extract to create a folder named 'content', then you just need to burn that folder as a data file to DVD/CD.

Your 360 will read it as a 'mixed media' disc, but you need to go into Games Library-->Demos and Trials to load it.

jonarob - December 8, 2008 08:47 PM (GMT)
Exactly what he said ^^

If the demo you download is literally just a rar file containing the demo data, it needs putting into a series of folders like this:

Content\0000000000000000\434387F2\00080000

Presumably so the 360 recognises the file location.

Fantastic!!!!!

romanista - December 9, 2008 10:49 AM (GMT)
i'll be doing this tonight, just coping a folder to a cd should be something i can do..

jonarob - December 9, 2008 10:56 AM (GMT)
Surprisingly it worked first time for me! Apparently it's better to burn to a DVD rather than a CD, though. The loading times running from CD take ages I've heard. But I suppose it's only a demo.

zaphod79 - December 10, 2008 10:17 AM (GMT)
Tried it and it does look nice , another hint about burning is when i extracted the file it was into a folder called content and it didnt work , so the *top* folder on the DVD is content and the first subfolder is 0000000000000000

The 2nd mission is much better than the first - you get a sniper rifle which allows for headshots , i had a <doh> moment when i chucked my partner over to the other roof and then she was attacked and i'm thinking .... but i cant see her so how can i save her :-)

Then the chainsaw guy came out and almost killed me - my partner ran up and injected me with stuff so i didnt die then he lopped her head right off :-)

The most annoying bit for me is the fact that its 'a' to run , especially after playing Dead Space recently which uses the left shoulder button i found it difficult to run / move and move the camera at the same time.

jonarob - December 10, 2008 10:21 AM (GMT)
A to run is just moronic. It means you have to more or less run in a straight line all of the time.

romanista - December 10, 2008 11:04 AM (GMT)
zaphon, that is root - content - 000 etc
root=content - 000etc

Dumpster - December 10, 2008 11:01 PM (GMT)
Can anyone confirm for me that this still works? I played for a bit yesterday, and now my DVD won't load. Have MS stopped this, or is it just my disc broke?

Tael - December 11, 2008 04:31 AM (GMT)
It's been blocked but only when you're online. I disconnected from Live and was able to play.

Anyone tried the full game yet? It seems to be getting mixed reviews.

jonarob - March 17, 2009 04:51 PM (GMT)
I'm completely skint, but I'll be picking it up at the end of the month.

I really like it. It being co-op definitely helps, but I find it easier to control (if still not so easy as something like L4D). It's good looking, and fun so far.

Dumpster - March 17, 2009 09:33 PM (GMT)
Enjoying it so much that I have nearly finished it.

It's not as good as 4, but has some excellent stuff. My advice is go to Asdas where it is £32, and don't read anything else until you have completed it.

A review. Of it.

Sorry, I was brought up short by:

Resi 5 has you fighting ambulatory bags of cats?

grumpysmurf - March 18, 2009 10:47 AM (GMT)
Criminy.

Edit: Our eagle-eyed sub-editor is a cat lover and everything. Tsk.

jerry - March 18, 2009 11:06 AM (GMT)
I played through the demo on the 360 and feckin hated it. Hideous controls / aiming, and plodding gameplay.

smac - March 18, 2009 11:08 AM (GMT)
[@grumpysmurf] I only mentioned it because the mental image just made me smile.

It's only a matter of time before Capcom use a bag of cats as a boss, I'm sure. Evil, mutant, zombie cats, naturally.

jerry - March 18, 2009 11:11 AM (GMT)
I can't wait for zombie cats. Zombie dogs seem to be commonplace these days, but the only zombie cat I recall was in Re-animator.

You're forgetting Pet Cemetery.

It's been many many years since I saw that. The only thing I remember from it was a scalpel wielding zombie baby / toddler... that image seems to be burnt into my head!

That's put me off right there. 4 was great, but not as Resi as I'd have liked. If it's a worse game than 4, this is where I part company with the series.

Kinda depressing really, the same thing happened with Burnout. Both should release a more traditional title for the long-term fans, maybe under a side banner or something.

Craster - March 18, 2009 12:29 PM (GMT)
5 is great, but it's not traditional Resi by any stretch of the imagination. It's much more action, much less puzzles. Much less shitty controls, but possible a little too fast-paced.
