Fall – The Brook, Southampton 29/10/05

Just got back, really good tight gig (& a full house), for those of you that have stayed up, setlist as follows (seems fairly standard for the tour so no real surprises):

Youwanner
Sparta FC
Clasp Hands
Pacifying Joint
What about us – (MES fucks turns Bens amp off for a while)
Aspen – (MES again turns Bens amp off)
Mountain Energei
Assume
Wrong Place (leading into) Grass Grow
Touch Sensitive
Blindness

Encore:
Boxitosis
White Lightening

Actually White Lightning was last played at the second gig of this tour - seems a bloody lifetime ago now...

On Wrong Place, it has been dropped a couple of times in favour of a stand alone Grass Grow and at Sheffield night 2 appeared after Grass Grow in non-segued format.

Thanks for the setlist info - Track record now being updated.

In the meantime, I'm off to top up my weak lemon drink and make some meat paste sandwiches for my stint on the platform.....

Was going to give a more detailed rundown in the morning as I'm a bit bolloxed but
Fall were on just before 10:30, JCC had done a great stint as support & we were 'entertained' by 'Resist' around 9 ish (they weren't as bad as some people have said - honest)

Anyway - bit of a camera fuck up, so only got some dodgy mobile jobbies - see what they are like in the morning.

By any stretch of the imagination, the support band were total shit. Totally pointless. They only time people clapped was when they thought it was their last song. My advise would be to learn to play your instruments.

JCC quite funny.

The Brook is was packed, and it was a real struggle getting to the bog and back. Lots of bald 40 something’s blocking my every route.

I met up with Conway who is over from NZ. By a bizarre coincidence, he was staying in the same hotel as the band, and secured his name on the guest list. Conway said he had a great night. It’s a long way to come and get you gig cancelled, so he was relieved when it all went ahead. I grabbed him a set list.

I thought the band were on pretty good form tonight. Keyboards far too high in mix at the start, but I think it was MES who turned then down. Why does Ben wear a jacket? He was sweating like a pig. No booze or fags on the stage. Mountain Energi highlight for me. Steve and MES great duet on Boxitosis. MES pushed Steve to front of stage. This is where all bassists should be. I thought Bed was a bit subdued. Maybe it was because he was so hot in that jacket?

MES messes with guitar amp. Ben sorts it out when Mark’s not looking. He’s getting good at that now. Kick-bass drum mike removed late in gig. Hard for a drummer to get that back in place! Most songs finish as and when. I think Mark adds vocals all over the place just to confuse. Good live stuff.

Clayts has some of my photos. I've no idea how to get them on here.

Lets hope for much the same in Brighton.

Good review! Was mark pushin Steve to the front of the stage, "where all bassists should be".... or trying to push him OFF the stage... "Where all bassists should be" !!!????

MES is fully aware that a bass player is the most important member of any band. Trafford Plays A Fender P , by the way. I will get some photos off to you KDW.

Very good gig. Top Fallabilly. Hanley's is a sound account - cant wait for photos. Mark seemed focused and the band is tighter than a gnat's chuff right now. Knob twiddling not overdone - Ben shaking his head at one point but overall he seemed to enjoy himself, as they all did. Spen got annoyed about the removal of the bass drum mic only once that I noticed. Eleni looking so chic - she is turning into Audrey Hepburn.

Resist seemed as utterly pointless as at Oxford, the last time I had the "pleasure". Were politely applauded. At least it was only half hour.

JCC would not last 5 minutes in a pukka comedy club with material this dated. He even had the nerve to do the non-rhyming limerick about being stung on the neck by a wasp which (I think) Spike Milligan first penned. Laughed anyway. The poems are much better, JCC.

This venue is more used to handling more sedate nostalgia-based 70s/80s revival nights and in the circs they did not cope badly - not hard to get a drink at one end of the bar.

Just spoken to Conway.
He sez sorry to anybody who saw his shameless exhibition in the mosh at the Brook; where he danced with his arms and legs flailing around like a demented epileptic windmill.
The underpants he was wearing on his head were only there so some Forum members he had arranged to meet could recognise him... or so he claims. He will endeavour to sort out a clean pair for his next gig.
And he wishes to make it clear he doesn't usually make a habit of trying to grab the microphone to shout "Bring back Brix!", but had drunken a few too many pints of frothy English beer last night.

Top stuff indeed.
Resist are wretched and to be avoided at all costs.
JCC not much better than a bad working mens club comedian, only just falling short of mother-in-laws jokes and "my wifes so fat....." type gags, good poems but only 2 of them!!!
The Fall majestic, all the Fall virgins in our little group were amazed how good they were.
MES moved whole bass amp away from its mic, and threw a guitar stand to the back the stage.
My feet hurt, having been crushed by weighty, middle aged Fall fans whilst down the front in the pit, very, very, very hot too.

Really very, very good, rentless and hypnotic my left ear is still buzzing though it didn't seem that loud in there, are there TG-esque subliminal frequencies being used?

I had this hearing experience after Oxford, which seemed none too loud in the hall, and again after last night (although it did not last so long). I just think our hearing is shot away, man

sorry about me size 12s....

MCR - Guilty as charged - I think I may have been one of the weighty, middle aged fans in question down at the front!

Oh that was Conway then!

Yes, I was rather amused by the 'bring back brix' comment & thanks for letting us have the mike for some 'White lightening' chorus.

Oh yes - was that you that made the cheeky jaunt onto the stage to grab the setlist before they came back on for the encore?

I'm not fat. And I'm 39, not 40. Bald yes.

Lots of girlies near the front. What's all that about. Did you see Vince Clarke grab that set list? Boy he was fast.

Spencer wasn't on drums. It was Al Murray.

I'm having very disturbing flashbacks from lastnight concerning the rock-combo 'Resist.'

Can't get one of their "tunes" out of me head - it keeps coming back so I've had to download it from their website http://www.resistmusic.com/ - It's called violated - ok, so they can't play very well & the lead singer sounds like a cross between Toyah & Hazel O'Conner - sort of catchy though!!

Didn't mind being trod on at all part of the fun of being at the front, can't claim to be on the young side either being "around" the forty mark myself. Merely relaying my experiences of last night

Did any one else notice MES's little shimmy during touch sensitive?

Great mmmmm mountain energi and rolling of rrr's on assume too.

The MES two-step shuffle, nice shimmy....top gig, top venue, Fall tighter than a very tight thing, certainly best i've ever seen'em.......better than Hanley / Scanlon ? Well, definitely up there....
Pass the Fuckin' Joint
My neck is still aching a-plenty. One day the whole venue will be moshing their tits off and not just the first 3 or 4 rows...

Should I scoot over to Brighton or what....hmmm...?
