did anything interesting happen at the first Sparta Chelsea match last month?
any Chelsea fall fans daring to go their 'last game' next month? do these teams play often or is it getting strange again...? |

Hey.
I was listening to Theme from Sparta FC last night on headphones a while ago and was able to make out Phonetic Translation: "Ella Na Soo Thixo Poso tha alaxo Otan tha moo thosis Kati na sfaxo Ella valeh stihima Yia na kerthiso Afto then ineh pimma Yia ta skoopithia." English Translation: "Come and I will show you How I will change When you give me Something to slaughter Come and have a bet So i can win This is not a poem For the bin." There you have it... regards Thanasi. |

Top job! Thanks for that Thanasi, though I'm disappointed it doesn't bear out FFD's hearing of 'West Ham I like some'. It's been bugging me trying to figure out what Eleni sang. Hey Conway - better update the lyrics parade!

So it's the same as the English version only in Greek

It's all Greek to me. -------------------- We show that whether the short sighted phenotype will be an evolutionary stable strategy (and thus lead to the collapse of civilization) depends on the initial proportion of short sighted people relative to people with foresight as well as their relative discount rates. Further we explore some comparative static results that connect the probability of the game continuing and the relative size of the two discount rates to the likelihood that civilization will collapse.

That reminds of that scene in Dr. Strangelove where they say he changed his name, giving his original German one. But the old one is German for "strange love" as well.

Yeah. When i first heard it, it wasn't really clear. I managed to catch snippets of the greek and at that point i assumed it would be different to what Mark was singing. Mark's lines rhyme a lot better when sung in greek but Eleni is missing the slavic, invective drawl that seems to come so naturally to Mark. regards, thanasi. |

I assumed it was a further reference to the Sparta of ancient history - as per The Post Nearly Man's Enigrammatic Dream

F C = Football Club.....right? Anyway maybe what he means by "supposed to be mythical" is that the team he's singing about in the song does not nessesarily resemble the actual Sparta team

Did anyone see The Times last Wednesday, something in the sports section on football songs. the journo reckons Sparta one of only three great sports songs. someone is saving it so I'll try and get it scaned, unless someone else is already on to it.

My favourite football related songs: All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit - Half Man Half Biscuit (I wonder if anyone's written a song about Prague other team - Slavia) Strachan - The Hitchers Girlfriends, Love, hate & Saturday nights in. Anyone recommend any more? |

lets not have Blue is the colour for Chelski then. How about "Cheer up Peter Reid" for all of the Sunderland fans on the crap town thread? And Peter of course. I once went to Prague & cold not find any footbal ephemera -------------------- Save money; write your own books.

You've got to be right here. "We're not Galatasaray, we're Sparta FC" "Come on and have a bet" "You mug old women in your bobble hats" Blatantly obvious football references, I would have said. BUT, as is so often the case with Fall songs it's only a partial explanation. Because what about lines like, "We live on blood" - (indeed likely to be a reference to ancient Sparta) "Come on I will show you how it will change When you give me something to slaughter" This could tie in with football and ancient Sparta. And I'll admit that the line "We live on Mark Lamarr" - has me totally baffled. It's funny though. I've long given up thinking that Fall songs are specifically about any one thing, despite what even Smith himself might otherwise claim. -------------------- It is idle to think that things in this life will last for ever in one state.

Will this track be used at the end of the show if they win the final.
(I think its a shame they didn't win the last one then we could have seen headings along the lines of Grecian 2000 bringing colour to the tournament.) |
