As if he would!!!
MES en France... yep, it happened. If ever there was a Pacifying Joint, this was it. A disused one level dock concrete warehouse by the Saone (or was it the Rhone) on the grottiest edge of France's second biggest city.
When you've forked out a small fortune in pounds and Euros on flights, car parking, hotel... in the dubious knowledge it could like Edinburgh, Brighton etc be cancelled... it's nice to find the right place, at the right time. And we were - just!
In fact, me and the girlfriend Alex (a converted Fall fan through delightful jaunts to Preston, Blackburn and Aldershot civic centre), almost came to blows in exaspertaion at finding a venue that nobody had heard of. Amazing, seeing as Les Nuits Sonores was a five-day musical feast featuring the cream of electronic music, DJs etc... and the mighty Fall.
But, elbowing our way past dock-side French whores and early-rising ravers we got there, phew, only to have missed the once in a lifetime chance of seeing Damo Suzuki on the marathon night-three bill.
Contenting ourselves with a mega overpriced beer (2.50 Euros for a little plastic cup of gnat's piss... who said beer's dear back in London?) we stumbled through his dark and dingey dive. Since the Government's anti-rave bill back in England, no home venue like this grey death trap would ever get licensed... but hey, we're in Europe now! A more appropriate venue for The Fall I have yet to visit.
On came act No.2... Der Plan. 1980s relics and Krautrock legends. No I've never heard of them either... but should have! Three blokes with a wide array of props and masks, this was performance art at its finest... set to pure pre-recorded electronic fun. Did Der Plan ever win Eurovision? They should have. Kraftwork with a sense of humour. Hilarious, you'd never think they were German.
Humour restored, we endulged into the delights of pukemaster bogs and wizzened kids out of their heads on a quid/Euro of blow. Rave is alive and well, en France.
12.30am and it's time for The Fall. I could be mistaken but they were actually on early. Prompt, The Fall?!! Line-up: Ben, Spencer, Steve, Eli and some old git with a glove (yeah, that glove!).
DJ Ai on decks fails to cutout his thumping beat as Ben prepares to let rip into Sparta FC... so what the hell, he lets rip. That'll teach ya, DJ. And on with the show.
I won't bore you with the track listing, but Pacifying Joint rocks - one the simplest riffs in years (ya granny on bongo could get the hang on it). Mic trouble dogged MES all through, and only Eli's seemed to work... so thankfully she stepped in and gave it to him in time for a rousing encore of White Lightning. A solid no-nonsense hour, a well-looking MES raised a chuckle with Ben near the end, before exiting promptly to let the scheduled action flow into dawn.
Highlight was a MES's extended gloating look, eyes half closed, front of stage. In my girl's view: "Mark IS the lord of the manor, the lord of a very mad manor." And so it was.
If you missed a rare entrance into the mad world of Euro fest fun... TOUGH. Well worth all the hassle....

Great review - and yes please do bore us with a setlist, if you can remember it.

Some of us are very obsessive about this info (me, esp.)

please do bore us with a setlist,

erm, let me see... sparta, mountain, wrong place, lightning, joint, blindness (about 15 mins long), grass grow, clasp, erm..... this is proving more difficult than expected.... i was awake for 24hrs so my brain probably retained less information than necessary for this task....

more mic wire spider's webbing than i've ever seen before.
professional performance by the band (possibly too much so), eleni entertainingly amateur, mark looking vaguely human.

the venue was depressingly wonderful.
the french can't dance.

The highlights were Mountain and Blindness to me. Absolutely great. But it was difficult to hear Mar'k's voice in a few songs. Too much hysteria in the audience. Damo Suzuky and Der Plan were impressive too.

Great review.

Hard to hear MES' voice again...just like at Brighton.

Another thing that needs sorting out... biggrin.gif

me too.

mark ended it at one point, only for it to build from the drums again upto a fantastically inept keyboard solo from mes himself. it was truly cacophonic. w00t.gif wacko.gif
particularly effective kkorg knob twiddling from eleni too.

did i say how great mouse on mars are live? i've seen them before and they didn't dissapoint this time either.

Berts full review in French...... For confused locals looking to see SlipKnot
Oh, also for French Fall converts biggrin.gif

Comme s'il ferait ! ! DUR. Bien la valeur toute la peine. ... bert zuttbap A Posté : le 9 mai 2005, 01:05 DU SOIR
