There has been some discussion on this already, but I thought I'd start a nice neat new thread here to avoid confusion. Here's my response:

Clasp Hands - On 1st listen, this doesn't grab me by the throat. It's perfectly good, it just left me a little mellow.gif ..it even sounded a touch (whisper it) Beggars Brix to me!

Then that chord sequence came in! Odd thing is, I couldn't place it! 1st I thought they were referencing one of their old songs, then I thought it was somebody elses. A couple of bars later I realised it was both! I'm not sure what I think about this yet - my instinct is to think it's lazy, but then why should I mind them using the same chords twice, but let them off simply rerecording an old song (see below)?

No logic to it, really. I think that this track will have to be heard again to judge properly (don't forget, I was pretty tired, & the radio was on relatively low so as not to disturb the wife!).

Oddly, when it was announced I thought it was called "Glass Pans"! That is what was originally written on my C90 box! Do you remember those 80s transparent pyrex pots you could get, called "Vision"? That's what I thought it was about.

They were great for making popcorn in. "You can put the dinner on, I'll be home in 20 minutes" (or was thata different ad? Oh well).

I enjoyed the session it's the first one I've listened to live for a number of years, I enjoyed the middle two (the 2 new ones, not sure about "Clasp Hands") applaud.gif
(Bloody hell we posted very closely-within 7 minutes of each other) biggrin.gif

Blindness:

Funny, when Peel played this at the wrong time* I thought "Now, that sounds like a good Fall song"!

It's good this, sounds great. ON 1st listen I'm not convinced that it's a solid gold composition, but I adore the performance. Very nice (best of the sess, probably).

* Ah, I've missed old clumsy Peel. I wish they hadn't moved him to 11.00. I hardly ever hear it anymore. I should make an effort, I guess, otherwise noone will listen & he'll be cancelled & I'll get upset & it'll be like "One Man & His Dog" all over again. Except with more gabba.

What About Us?

Nice little tune. Strange that, over the last 10 years, many of The Fall's songs owe more to Suzi Quattro & Gary Glitter than the Pistols or Beefheart.

Any idea why the protagonist is a rabbit??

Not so sure about the backing vox - I seem to have been a bit fed up with these in recent times: shut yer goddamned box!

I wasn't sure at the beginning of Clasp Hands, then the tempo shifted.. and the whole session was pure gold from then on. I don't usually like Wrong Place Right Time, but the way it sequenced into Grass was spinetingling..

Wrong Grass:

I love Wrong Place, so it was a pleasure to hear it again. Didn't like it quite so much as the orig (less punchy) but maybe that's just because I'm not used to it. Nice work.

I like the segue, because they don't just fade into each other, you can hear a ghost of Wrong for ages underneath Grass Grow. To be honest, I wasn't expecting to think much of Grass Grow, but it really works, & they play it superbly. Best "straight" cover I can think of, in fact!!

So overall, very happy with the result. I preferred Peel 23, but mayeb this was only because I didn't know what to expect, whereas last night I had great faith in them. Peel was v happy (come on, tho, John, it wasn't the best sess ever - dig out your old archives, boy!) & was v polite in thanking them: he must have forgiven MES his telephonic outburst!

Anyone have anything to add?

What are the chances this session will be included on the (hopefully) upcoming Peel session box set ?

I don't think anyone's going to be disappointed with this Chase. Peelie might have been exaggerating when he said it was their best Peel session, but it could be in my top 5. Real shiver-down-the-spine stuff..

The songs are rock solid, and I do so enjoy the fact that MES is getting back into his old vocal form.

I think I'll have to offset the Big Chief's rating by giving the session a 10.5/10.

smile.gif very nice :had it on very loud and enjoyed the clarity after distortions of live performance ..that said, 'What About Us' seemed a bit light, especially compared to the molton version played in stourbridge devil.gif

He may need a big wig these days, but he is in fact a funny stand up/music based comic.
Dry, droll and unfunny making him very funny.

Last time i saw him was supporting The Fall at London Forum (Light User Tour?), his act was himself and a hand held tape deck put through the PA.

Some folks thought it would be a "larf" to throw bottles at him- to which he responded along the lines of:

"I can see some of you think you'd like to throw bottles at me, it doesn't bother me in fact to prove it i'll stay still for this next number so you can have a clear shot- it just makes a mess on the stage for when the main act comes on- he may feel like having a little dance and could hurt himself."

He then did "She Loves You (And you know that can't be bad)"- fared better than WORLD OF LEATHER ot the BRIXTON FRIDGE (Middle Class Revolt era) who were bottled off like i've never seen. Owch!
