I've never bothered registering or contributing to the forum before - just got back from Croydon.
Can't remember set - although they did "wrong time, wrong place" or whatever its called.
Fall gruppe were tight and sharp - but - my god was the set short. Approx. 30 mins all told. No "Blindness" which I was particularly gutted about. Felt a bit cheated to be honest.
As an aside, Gallon Drunk were absolutely fucking superb - on fire I tell ye!

I am lucky? enough to be going on the third night. It would be helpful if someone could say what time the Fall went on stage so that I can minimise my time in Croydon without missing any of the 23 minutes that I will may be seeing.
cheers

sounds like a few more songs than sunday .. maybe they were shorter if it only took 30 minutes?

There are 2 things about the Fall gig length. Watched them in Athens. Between songs, there are 1 or 2 seconds. They don't do the Ramones thing (1, 2, 3 let's go), but they do it very fast. Faster than the Echo & the Bunnymen (The Fall were on Friday, Echo on Sunday)
The second thing, is, that already, in those 4 gigs (Greece and 2 x Craydon), it seems that they played only 3 new songs.
Where is the rest stuff ?
Is it bad, they afraid to it, they don't used to play them live, what ?

I will post more photos when I stop going to Fall gigs. Amp abuse taken to a new extreme last night. An amp was destroyed on Sunday I gather! I only expacted 40 mins or so, and that's what we got. Great entertainment all round. Gig stopped at Mountain Energi.

Many thanks for the reviews and the setlist.

As for the length of gig - ain't early Gallon Drunk-concerts (great to hear that they were on fire) been nearly that short?

Even shorter than Sunday then. Just a suggestion, if no more than 30-40 minutes can be managed, come on about 10 do half-an-hour, off at 10.30 have a cup of tea and cucumber sandwich, back at 11 for another half-an-hour, then all off home in time for the last train.

Shame I missed this. I wouldn't mind a ticket either for tonight or Wednesday now I think.

It's a shame Systematic Abuse wasn't played. It would be interesting to hear whether it's semi-, or even fully, autobiographical. question.gif And also whether it was written or co-written by either Ben and/or Steve and/or Spencer. laugh.gif

That's the best I've seen them in ages. Pissed all over the Islington debacle. They were tight, MES wasn't completely wankered and over the years I've come to expect no more than 35-40 minutes anyway. The little we got was so much better than anything I've seen from them in the past four years. Great venue to see the Fall in as well, apart from the sodding great posts and the benches.

Most annoying thing was that the tickets said 9.00pm on them and Gallon Drunk started at about ten to, meaning I missed most of their set. But did get there in time to see a rip-roaring version of Some Fool's Mess, which kind of made up for it.

My advice to those going tonight and Wednesday is don't expect and hour and a half set (or any different material) and you won't be disappointed.

i'd like to think the venue/band are trying to get some decent equipment for the next few nights so they can complete the planned set.

I think it's time for a brass section in the Fall. Give a new spin to Mr Pharmasist.

There's a musical instruments shop practically across the road from The Cartoon.

As an aside, it's funny isn't it how there were no technical difficulties or problems with equipment when Gallon Drunk played. Wonder why.

Approx. 30 mins all told.

Yes, if you measure it to the nearest 30 minutes tongue.gif

I made it 40 minutes, and it was all blinding up until What About Us. Must admit, I'm tiring of that a bit now - having heard it twice on Monday and then an extra-long version of it last night.

Disappointed not to get the rest of the planned set last night looking at the setlist. Maybe if they get themselves off to Rockbottom for some new kit!

The projector going bluescreen lent MES an odd hue!

Or how about bagpipes?

I'm still looking forward to the Stratford gig.

Anyone else going to be there?

Guten Morgen!
Forum member the unseen here reporting from Croydon. Another short set - looks as if this is part of a plan. Short but sweet. Nothing to complain about IMHO. I particularly liked M. Edward's remark about the microphone situation: "Three microphones...splashing out at the Cartoon Club (pronouned 'cloob')". Did we notice a hint of self-mockery here? Eleni was wearing an all-black outfit and hardly any make-up (as far as I could see as she had disappeared behind a thick cloud of cigarette smoke). Charming. At least part of the audience I think had come to see Gallon Drunk - by far the best support act they've had for ages (well, if you don't count Johnny Clark that is). Before the Fall came on we were once again "treated to" this video/DJ thing which, though not altogether bad, doesn't profit from repeating. And they played some nice music again before the show (The Slits' "I Heard it through the Grapevine" and The Dead Kennedys' "California Ueber Alles" are two I can remember). No sign of any new material last night. But I was hoping for some golden greats to be played, anyway. So...another two to go. What next one might wonder. Now that there is only a year-long Las Vegas residency left to do.
Danke to the Gruppe and danke to the Japanese leopard lady in the audience. Hallo Holger, wie isset Jong?
Bye
