For those that are interested in such things, here is a badly translated excerpt from the site (originally written in Dutch, rather than the non-existent Belgian Language)

QUOTE

A kickoff in style!

No music genre has been as interwoven with poetry as punk.

Suddenly writers - uniquely, rebelliously and funnily - found themselves supported, rapidly, loudly, and at home. (eh?)

With the raw unpolished punk, rock-'n-roll had returned to its deepest roots.

Punk was contagious: a complete generation of writers was contaminated.

De Nachten (The nights) serve up a hearty repast for poem day!

No retro: but from dada by means of punk to writers in the 21ste century.

With rocking names such as Richard Hell (the US, to see Voidods and other Heartbreakers), Penny Rimbaud (GB, Crass), Attila the Stockbroker (GB), Didi the paris and Elvis Peeters.

The Musical finale is the legendary British band The Fall.
The always unpredictable mark E. Smith and co. boast of having made music over a career of 30 years. With the release of their John Peel-sessions they have reached a vast mythical status.

Be with the Legend!!

Actually, that last bit translates literally as "Do The Legend!" which might offend.

Tickets are 15€ or 17.50 at the door which seems quite reasonable.

The venue is on the kai (quay)-side, next to the river, but a bit out of town towards the south and the other side of the ring - anyone who needs details of cheap accomodation, let me know.

I'm seriously considering the Antwerp date; I'm thinking of flying from Leeds Bradford airport to Amsterdam (with cheapo airline Jet2) and then getting a train from Amsterdam to Antwerp. Is this do-able and reasonably inexpensive? What are the cheap accommodation options in Antwerp? And is anyone else going from the UK?

It is certainly do-able. Cost will depend on the flight costs mostly. There is a direct trainline from Amsterdam Schiphol to Antwerp (about 2 hours ), which costs next to nothing compared to UK train prices - I would guess about 30 quid tops, unless you want to go by Thalys.

The cheapest way to get here would be to take the Eurostar - if booked in advance, it is about 50 euros each way - the cost of the trip is to Brussels, but the ticket allows travel on to any other Belgian station - so in effect it would be for the trip from Waterloo to Anwterp - about 70 quid return.

Accomodation here is cheap enough if you are happy with a holiday Inn type hotel for about 20-30 quid a night, up to a couple of hundred for the night if you want the Hilton.

I am going to take a look nearer the venue as it is an area of town, I am not so familiar with - but taxis are cheap and plentiful, there is a tram pretty much to the venue from the city centre for 1€.

Okay - last post on the subject.

Nearest hotel seems to be the Htoel Industrie - quite a nice place and it is 67€ for the night.

Cheapest seems to be the Internation Youth Hostel which is near the centre and costs 32€ for a single room with no shower or 60€ for a double room with shower.

PM me if you need any more info and get yourselves over here!!

Don't know about Leeds, but from London Victoria it's £30 return to Antwerp on eurolines coach an eight hour journey (bring your own soft furnishings)
and £10.10 a night at den hexenketel hostel.
Mind you, March dates closer to home aren't so far off now.

if you are going to this gig, then you might want to either wait outside or stay at the bar while the support acts are on. ive heard they are 2 terrible anorak wearing "yeah, we are harder than liam" style bands from the town. at least the bar is at the opposite end to the stage.

I've heard the place is a bit of a mansion compared to some venues

sorry if this is out of context, but I just picked this thread up after long time, and found a totally different thread. Which reminds me: Gad, when I was in A-dam 85 I picked up, typed in A4 paper format with slightly thicker orange coloured sheets forming covere of stapled together first written translation of Bowie's lyrics that I'd ever seen. I came across them in Waterlooplien Market.

I also had to hitch hike through Belgium and it was the most amazing thing, besides Waterloo, that you can go anywhere from one of two roads. these are ring roads I can only refer to as inner and outer, which which allow one to gradually hone in on destination in orbitale fashione.

Man, am I looking forward to the Antwerp show. Forum member djhollerbusch and myself are going by car...and have booked ourselves into a hotel whose name resembles that of a Fall song. Fantastic life!

You're probably saying to yourselves: "Isn't he THE UNSEEN? Can't he break himself out of this?" Yes, I can. Swell. But that won't get me what I need to know.

looks like he's not, after all - the petrol website no longer has him listed, and his own has no mention of it either.
He is going to spain in a couple of months though:
"Richard will be reading from his writings at the Lope de Vega Theater in Seville, Spain for the "Festival Internacional La Música y la Palabra" Festival of the Spoken Word on March 3, 2006, headlining the opening night of the three day series which features writers speaking their works to musical accompaniment. Richard will be bringing a CD weaving together various obscure instrumental recordings by his bands to be played behind his reading."

This I have from a friend:

"There are interesting support acts that night: Belgian stand-up poets (Didi de Paris, Elvis
Peeters), two British weirdo performers (Attila The Stockbroker, Penny Rimbaud) plus
American cult hero John S. Hall"

Attila the Stockbroker staked his claim to poetry in this fair town some 26 years ago.
He's very good smile.gif

I am the last black american and I will be attending the festival as well. I have been a fall fan for a while now. I have a family member playing in one of the supporting acts. Instead of making a shameless plug for his band, I would rather like to know any particulars about the venue and the festival itself that might prepare me in advance. What type of acts? Do I need a jacket? Do I need binoculars? What was it like last year?
How should the last black american prepare for the often hostile Antwerpen thuggery?

see you in 'Twerpen
