Title: Doctor Who
Description: (merged)
Quest - November 17, 2005 12:42 PM (GMT)
Has there been a "who would make a good Doctor Who" thread before?
I remember reading stuff somewhere about MES claiming that he could have had an audition to be the new Doctor Who at one point.
I'm very disappointed with Christopher Ecclestone's recent version, and it struck me the other night while watching Late Review that Grayson Perry would make a great Doctor Who - particularly if he cross-dressed occasionally in the role.
Any other candidates?

He does have BBC connections.

Another cross-dresser...

I liked Christopher Ecclestone, myself. He wasn't as good as Tom Baker, of course, but then who was? Who could be?
I could quite see MES in the role, actually. Imagine those trailers that went out for the new Doctor Who, but with Mark E Smith rather than Ecclestone: "D'yer wanna come wi' me?... hic!... bugger, where's me fffn Tardis keys?" And MES actually looks like a 900 year old man.
BTW, what is it with Fall fans and Doctor Who? Looking over people's avatars on here, there are Daleks, Cybermen, an Auton, Mr Sin, the 9th Doctor and Rose... clearly there is some intersection between the two fan bodies. Any thoughts on why that should be?
Billybigbananas - November 17, 2005 02:50 PM (GMT)
Ive always thought that Rhys Iffans would do an excellent job. Or Ricky Gervais?

I'm old enough to remember the first episode being broadcast. I think sweets were still on ration then.

Think the "age thing" might have something to do with the majority of people here being of an age where they'll have been prime Dr Who fodder in T. Baker's era, and the first two Baker series (with Philip Hinchcliffe producing) are thought by many, me included, to be the pinnacle.
That said, I thought some of the episodes in the latest series were absolutely brilliant, far surpassing my expectations. Didn't warm to Ecclestone immediately, but ended up sorry to see him go so soon, and thought Billie Piper was excellent.
chrisgoodhead - November 17, 2005 05:19 PM (GMT)
I thought Christopher Ecclestone was the best Dr Who there has been so far. Realise that I am in a big minority here.
I would like to see Jimmy Nail have a crack at it. Really!

My nomination for the perfect Doctor would be Alexei Sayle.
Now that he's settled into a comfy, eccentric middle age he would be spot on.
Only thing is, he would be a traditional Doctor in the Tom Baker mould, rather than an 'action man' in the new series mould.
The main benefit for me of the new series is to have sent me back into the archives and re-discover some stories that rose above the offensively small budgets.
In case anyone was in doubt, the best stories ever were INFERNO and THE MIND OF EVIL. Both starred Jon Pertwee, both were written by Don Houghton. I'll change my mind tomorrow, but they'll do for now.
REQUEST: does anybody have any of the LOOSE CANNONS reconstructions of missing episodes? I tried applying for copies but didn't even get a reply ...
Tobydynamik - November 17, 2005 05:37 PM (GMT)
Ken Campbell, perfect.
Apparentely he did once audition for the role...
Alexei Sayle would also be good... as would Honor Blackman if they decided to go "that" way

Honor Blackman ... NO-O-O-O !!!
Actually, Alexei is in Revelation of the Daleks but is somewhat mis- / under- used. It's easily the best Colin Baker story though. He really did have some duds. Anyone seen The Two Doctors with him and Patrick Troughton? Good grief ... !
Apparently Alexei once wrote a piece called Why I Should Be The Next Doctor Who ... I'd even let him keep his beard, and make him exempt from my planned National Beard Ban.

I agree with that. I hear she's also now jacked it in, so I'll be sorry to see her go.

Jonathan Pryce would be good, but he seems to be landing a few lucrative rolls recently, so I don't suppose that he would be willing to volunteer his services.
I thought that the last series was good despite Christopher Ecclestone. I don't think his acting was that good, but it was good enough for the young kids who were the bulk of the audience (I presume).

I have to disagree ... I thought the kids deserved better! His performance really annoyed me, and my children - eight and four - much prefer Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee. In fact, they watch almost any Doctor's adventures and leave Mr Eccleston's til the last!
The new series was okay but annoyed me on two levels: one, as a parent, it annoyed me that a couple of the episodes were far too scary for children - they simply went beyond the bounds of Doctor Who-scariness; and two, as a fan, I was angry that the last episode ended with a crappy nonsensical wrap-up about Rose being one with the Tardis, typical of the weaker older stories that just talked crap at the end instead of actually presenting a decent conclusion.
Also, the last episode destroyed all the tension by jumping back to the earth story all the time rather than giving the audience what they were all waiting for ... lots of exciting dalek shoot-ups!
Hopefully things will gell better for the next batch, but the old charm that needs re-discovering ... although a lot of children are de-sensitised by Star Wars, LOTR etc, they CAN appreciate older stuff that's more leisurely paced, my two love old Dr Who, the original King Kong, Laurel and hardy, old monster films like Jack The Giant Killer, old Superman cartoons, etc etc ... they just need to be introduced to it.
It's not like the good old days ...
mimi - November 17, 2005 07:26 PM (GMT)
christopher eccleston, but instead of being chirpy he acts really worried all the time. ive seen him do that b4 in other things. like - the daleks invade. *worried* *necks pills* *scribbles frantically into long paper notebook*..
billie is like "get a grip man!"... he clings onto the interior of the er.. shuttle thing. tardis. like a huge beetle. the daleks spray him with dalek spray. he has a big panic attack right infront of billies mum and a whole battalion of daleks. the king dalek goes
"ah ffs" and sprays him with gooey green stuff. he goes "ahhh thats better". the daleks win.

I don't know if you saw the thread in the 'Other Polls' section that we had about all of this. There were one or two negative aspects that irritated me a bit, but I mentioned them over there, so I won't keep going on about them. Overall, I was just glad that the Doctor was back, and was being given serious treatment by the Beeb. The pros outweighed the cons for me.
I don't rate Ecclestone all that highly. I've seen him do one or two things that I liked, but a lot more that was poor (28 Days Later being a prime example). I watched Doctor Who with an open mind though, and even though I thought his acting wasn't too good, I was prepared to overlook it. However, I was truly pissed off when he announced he was quitting before we'd even seen all of the series he was in.

Yes, it's good to have it back, and it reawakened my interest too.
I'm glad I'm not the only one pissed off by Eccleston's leaving. Personally I thought it was pretty disgraceful ... talk about leaving the others in the lurch before they've barely got off the ground ...
BTW, I have been lucky enough to get some of the super-scarce new Dr Who toys ... if anyone wants any comments, let me know ... some are good and some aren't ... however, there is a new talking 12" r/c WHITE dalek due soon and the talking R/C 6" DAVROS from Product Enterprises is also pretty cool ...
These are for my children for Christmas, I should point out ...
:)

This was the first series I really watched since I was a kid watching Patrick Troughton (I'm 45 now). I thought the recent series was tremendous fun; one or two of the stories were very good and my kids loved it all (aged 5 and 7).
Spurred on I bought the Patrick Troughton-Cyber Man serial from around 1967 or so on DVD for about £10. It was absolute shite.
We were easy pleased in them days....
New Doctor... Bobby Robson

I was a huge DW fan. Loved this new series too , but I can't help feeling you have missed that though many early stories are a bit ropey to watch , my god , some of the ideas. And a lot of talented people over the years had an input. The cybermen are a great example , the creation of Kit Pedlar a scientist and enviromentalist before his time...face it , cybermen are basically the Borg. Someone mentioned the Hinchcliffe years , and I very fondly recall some of the episodes I have seen from that era. Having said that , I recently watched the Claws of Axos (Pertwee) and it was cock.

I expected dodgy sets etc on the 1960's cyber men dvd but I also anticipated enough panache and, as you say, "ideas", to transcend this. Sadly it was badly acted, embarassingly staged and devoid of any originality. Hopeless. Written by Kit Pedler too. Maybe he had a bad week, or four. Hope so, I bought two other dvds as well!
The Eccles Connection - November 17, 2005 11:13 PM (GMT)
Chris Eccleston......No E!!!
David Tennant is the new Doctor Who and he will be very good
All of the other mind numbing speculation above, whilst in some parts being semi-humorous, is a waste of time...you are not going to get the look back bore version of the Doc with Russell T in charge so dont raise your hopes... Le Snage est dans le Tardis indeed....
As far as I can tell Billy is signed up for the whole of Series 2 and is keeping her options open
The Cybermen are quite clearly NOT the Borg as they do not operate on a hive mind basis
And given the historical precedent the the Borg would be a rip-off the Cybermen and not the other way round....
You need to take more drugs to enjoy the Claws of Axos
The Troughton Cyber Story (I assume the reference is to the Tomb) is patently not shite but a classic piece of television drama
I have to say with all candor that there is some absolute bollocks talked on this forum at the moment - I think the gene pool needs a little cleansing
Angry and perturbed of Eccles

monkeytennis - November 17, 2005 11:20 PM (GMT)
Calm down....Borg are clearly a rip off of cybermen , what I meant.
Sean Locke , semi-humerous? Nope Would love to see this as I think the man has acting ability and a slight air of menace.
Tomb?Love it.
Axos?Shite repeated.
Cleansed gene pool? Hartnell would have done it , but not Baker...."Have I the right?"
