Title: Best UK Punk Band:Wave 3
Description: Choose three
My Balloon - October 28, 2005 10:03 PM (GMT)
Choose your favourite three from the third wave of British Punk.
Dice Man - October 28, 2005 10:39 PM (GMT)
Great polls, these three. Here it get's tricky...
Liked what I've heard by ADICTS & CONFLICT, so they get my votes.
Big Chief Mango Chutney XIV - October 28, 2005 10:44 PM (GMT)
You missed out this lot: :P
LIBERTINO - October 28, 2005 10:52 PM (GMT)
Rudimentary Peni.
Fuckin hell!
What a band.
Mere hathering on about them here won't do them justice, if you haven't heard Rudimentary Peni, get out there and discover them now... it could still change your life for the better.
These are great polls My Balloon.
My Balloon - October 28, 2005 10:58 PM (GMT)
Cheers Libertino and Dice Man.
There are some great bands here, but had to go for Discharge (awesome groundbreaking noise merchants, Why? and Decontrol are just wonderful) and Crass, who meant a lot to me. Thirdly Zounds, for Demystification. Special mentions to the Neurotics and Violators.

Rudimentary Peni are incredible. Cacaphony is one of my favorite albums ever. NOTHING sounds like they do.
Big Chief Mango Chutney XIV - October 28, 2005 11:19 PM (GMT)
So are these pretty straight-up punk bands, or are some of them a bit more innovative a la The Fall? What would people reccomend? That Cacophony sounds interesting... what's it like?
Big Chief Mango Chutney XIV - October 28, 2005 11:29 PM (GMT)
I have just been reading about Rudimentary Peni online... sounds great... can someone try to describe Cacophony for me... I might buy it... but if its just ordinary punk rock then I probably won't bother... please convince me! :)

Rudimentary Peni... the ultimate redefinition of the much coined phrase "Wall Of Sound".
"They say music should be fun...Like reading a story of love...But I wanna read a horror story" as somebody once sang. This lyric aptly describes the Rudimentary Peni experience methinks.
Other than that, sorry BCMC XIV. The Cacaphony of noise created by torturing musical instruments and letting ones self loose with unbridled reckless abandon before a microphone, goes beyond the parameters of adequate description. You have to open your heart and ears to Rudimentary Peni and let them beat you into a state of gleeful aural submission, savagely.
SimonC - October 29, 2005 11:53 AM (GMT)
I seem to remember that Zounds made one record I quite liked (‘Can’t Cheat Karma’ – or was that someone else?) but the rest ‘em were crap…I never liked any of this stuff.
Smudger - October 29, 2005 09:10 PM (GMT)
Exploited....barmy army
Discharge
Crass

Thanks Libertino... I have just ordered my self a copy off Amazon. It was only £5.50 so I felt it was worth a gamble. Will report back to let you know how I get on.
I am looking forward to it because one reviewer said it was the Trout Mask Replica of Hardcore... which for me is the perfect irresistable description!
imaglasgowmanmyself - October 29, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
went for flux of pink indians poison girls and crass
but wouldnt listen to many of these bands for fun
gorillabat - October 30, 2005 07:08 AM (GMT)
Easy.
Rudi Peni
Crass
Flux
in that order.
Agree Cacaphony is a singular album. Still love "EPs of RP" as well. "The Fucking Cunts..." by Flux of Pink Indians is a nice listen as I recall.
Crass got overly politico-irritating after a while, but the shrieking avalanche of guitars in songs like Sheep Farming in the Falklands redeem them every time.

Yeah, I *loved* Crass's guitar sound! Penny Rimbaud's great biscuit tin drumming is also unmistakable. Unfortunately, as anybody who has had the misfortune to read Shibboleth will testify, he is also a tedious self-righteous twat.

bumped to avoid confusion with Pinheads poll.
pinhead69 - November 4, 2005 01:53 PM (GMT)

not far of it, one of the guys out of mars volta/at the drive in said it changed his life!!!
SteveHamilton - November 4, 2005 03:14 PM (GMT)
Think the Sub-Humans were worth a place on this poll. Astonishing omission! The Mob were very good too. I voted for The Epileptics/Flux, Zounds, and Rudimentary P.
My Balloon - November 4, 2005 03:41 PM (GMT)
The Mob should be here, granted, I forgot them. Witch Hunt is one of my favourite singles from the period, although I do think they were a bit boring after this, although The Mirror Breaks was a return to form.
Sub-Humans were ok but I felt they were a bit too much like other bands at the time.
SteveHamilton - November 4, 2005 04:00 PM (GMT)
Don't know The Mirror Breaks at all, will have to check it out, the only record I had was the first LP No Doves Fly Here.
We can agree to disagree on the Sub-Humans. I'm a bit biased though, I've known Dick for years. He's a top man, and an inspiration.
celldwellah - November 4, 2005 10:37 PM (GMT)
I went for RP and Discharge again, plus Zounds.
Why no Stupids? Would they be fourth wave? If a fourth wave poll comes in, do not forget Ripcord and Intense Degree.
snarfyguy - November 4, 2005 10:56 PM (GMT)
Anybody remember who did that song "Shell Shock?"
It had a real Ramones-y chorus:
I've got shell shock
I've got shell shock
I've got shell shock, oh yah
with a buzzsaw rhythm guitar and a sort of morse code solo.
That was a good one.

Yes, a good one!
Wasn't that Erazerhead?
Why weren't the Proles part of either of these polls? They were so much better than your average Buzzcocks/Undertones mimicry.

I think the Stupids would be fourth wave, this poll is for bands that emerged in 79 to 81 really.
I'm probably not the best person to start a fourth wave poll, the bands on wave three were the last lot I really liked, so if someone wants to start a fourth wave poll then feel free!
pinhead69 - November 5, 2005 12:33 PM (GMT)
i just listened to the subhumans cradle to the grave track which is awesome
and guess what i found out as well, they are playing in edinburgh tomorrow night
sore head at work on monday then!!!!

What kinda laugh would you have if you were in anyburb, USA, and saw some 14-year-olds decked out in such a punk uniform?
It happens!
My Balloon - June 20, 2008 12:28 PM (GMT)
Zoot Horn Polo - June 20, 2008 12:32 PM (GMT)
All of these bands were rubbish. I defiantly abstain.
rainmaster - June 20, 2008 12:34 PM (GMT)
Yep, all shite!
Heard Streets Of London by Anti nowhere League once, it was vile!
elvischomsky - June 20, 2008 12:41 PM (GMT)
My, there are some stinkers here.
Crass.
Any other fans of Jeffrey Lewis' 12 Crass Songs album that came out last year?
It's so beautiful.
It's - hey! - 12 Crass songs performed by the New York anti-folk singer.
No wait, where are you all going? Come back!!!!!!
Mere Pseud. - June 20, 2008 02:39 PM (GMT)
This is a bit like scraping the barrel.
My sole vote went to Zounds, the only band who came up with at least a few songs I liked.
Admittedly Crass are superior to the other bands in terms of ambition. Now if they only had the appropriate musical skills...
Neal Cassady - June 21, 2008 08:10 AM (GMT)
From the riot torn streets... of Stoke: Discharge!
Great band - seem to be name checked by all and sundry nowadays, and I can kinda see why. They played a lot harder and faster than most of the bands on the list (not saying that is a good thing), but you can see why every thrash act in existence seems to be giving them a heads up.
Crass are important for obvious reasons and Flux made some good records.
Suprising how many of these bands are still gigging and how many mohicaned bovver boot wearing punks come out of the woodwork to see them...
anonyarena - June 25, 2008 08:43 PM (GMT)
I voted Rudementary Peni, Crass, and I would've voted for Splodgenessabounds if they were on here.

Yes, have only actually heard Discharge in the last couple of years, but a lot of contemporary and older stuff I listen to is hugely influenced by them. Amazing band.
Also voted for Crass and Conflict. Have had a love-hate relationship with Crass, from being completely in thrall to them as a youngster to becoming tired of their dogmatism and limited musical abilities to accepting them as an innovative and valuable phenomenon. Conflict made a fabulous racket. Haven't really heard Flux to any great extent.
anonyarena - June 27, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
Would The Not Sensibles be Wave 3 or Wave 2? I don't understand these things too well.
Mopiranger - October 1, 2008 10:02 PM (GMT)
Hex by the Poison Girls is up on The thing on the doorstep. I'd never heard the band before - very impressed. The singer is something else! :girl2:
