Only three?
I went out and bought records by all of these back in the day.
But the Sex Pistols, Clash and Alternative TV will do to get the ball rolling.
ATV were the ones that started me off exploring other sounds at a tangent away from the 'scene' that developed around these bands. And I am still very grateful to them for that.
ATV equals three points in time.

Strangely(?) I was listening to The Slits when this page came up – their version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine (best cover ever?). They get my vote today.
cupid's bullet - October 28, 2005 10:23 PM (GMT)
The Pistols and the Adverts, certainly. Couldn't decide between The Damned and The Buzzcocks, so I didn't. -_-
Incidently, Penetration are playing at The Underworld on Sunday 20th November and I wouldn't miss it for nothing. And The Vibrators are playing at The Boston Arms, Tufnell Park with my good friends The Phobics tomorrow night, which I will miss, unfortunately. <_<...
...Going to see 'The Corpse Bride' with Mrs.CB instead :ohdear: <_< :ohdear:
Dice Man - October 28, 2005 10:27 PM (GMT)
SEX PISTOLS, CLASH and finally SIOUXSIE as the fave. Had I had a fourth vote, it would have gone to THE ADVERTS...

Same here for ATV..Sex Pistols and The Damned get my other votes.

Tough one this.
Voted for The Adverts, Crossing the Red Sea is the best Punk debut album.
The Clash and Buzzcocks.
Mere Pseud. - October 28, 2005 11:41 PM (GMT)
Clash, Stranglers and Buzzcocks - by considering only their early "punk phase"
High Tension Line - October 29, 2005 12:18 AM (GMT)
It was difficult to split the first five - as I am frustrated by only choosing, 3 I shall comment on more.
I chose The Clash, Siouxsie & the Banshees and The Adverts - great 1st albums that are the ones still most played by myself. The Clash - best live band I've ever seen.
However, I am judging this on the first one or two albums ( if they made that ) at most - I very much went off Siouxsie & the Banshees after McKay and Morris left, and it is on this basis I mean 'Siouxsie & the Banshees'.
Runners Up - Sex Pistols and X-Ray Spex.
I rate The Jam but only later on - the All Mods Cons/Setting Sons/Sound Affects period so they would not get a look in here for most of their early stuff. Really good live.
999, Buzzcocks, Stranglers, Chelsea and The Damned released some fine tracks, usually singles but I rate their stuff overall a bit less. Penetration did a good first album and some of their singles are pretty good. I still give Slaughter's first album an airing from time to time. I quite like the odd Generation X track.
The Slits - I liked the noisy first two Peel session, preferred that to the album Cut.
Pete Shelley's and Ari Up's vocals get on my nerves after a short time. Billy Idol and Adam Ant just get on my nerves.
Interesting addition of The Models - good single Man of the Year/ The Freeze.

True…I thought ’The Image Has Cracked’ album was one of the greatest things I’d ever heard when it came out …I haven’t played it in about twenty five years and I suspect it probably hasn’t aged well…but I really must dig it out and give it a another listen…
Voted Slits and Buzzcocks for other two places…
mik - October 29, 2005 11:50 AM (GMT)
Clash, Jam, Adam & The Ants
The Eccles Connection - October 29, 2005 12:05 PM (GMT)
Buzzcocks, ATV and the Stranglers
I'm not sure Murder and the Cats deserve to be in this list ....
Smudger - October 29, 2005 09:04 PM (GMT)
Adverts , Buzzcocks and Penetration for me
imaglasgowmanmyself - October 29, 2005 10:57 PM (GMT)
sex pistols the clash and the adverts for me
Three legged black grey hog - November 1, 2005 01:13 PM (GMT)
Buzzcocks and The Slits for sounding like nothing that had come before (although I remember reading someone describe Buzzcocks as 'a fusion of Can and The Stooges' when I was little and had heard neither Can nor the Stooges, and guess I see where that is coming from).
The Clash for being the best live band in the history of the universe. Never saw them, like, but the feeling is palpable even on TV footage.
The first Adverts album is indeed a wonderful thing. Honourable mentions for Subway Sect, the Stranglers and X-Ray Spex too.
While Holidays in the Sun has to be one of the finest things ever created by humans, most of the Pistols stuff leaves me fairly cold - the first PiL single makes them utterly redundant within about ten seconds.
I'm struggling with the question of whether Wire should've been on this list, based (obviously) on Pink Flag rather than anything they did after. Can anybody help?
JonN - November 1, 2005 02:41 PM (GMT)
Pistols, Buzzcocks, Subway Sect.
clasper - November 1, 2005 03:12 PM (GMT)
Pistols,Clash & Buzzcocks.Premier league.
tom_from_sparks - November 1, 2005 03:38 PM (GMT)
Pistols, Slits and X Ray Spex.
off to vote on the next poll now...
EAgas1 - November 1, 2005 04:57 PM (GMT)
I hate punk - all attitude with nothing to back it up. Punk also tendedto be the preserve of the middle class rebel - now they become new age travellers.
The stranglers and clash were ok because they moved away from punk.
pinhead69 - November 4, 2005 12:53 PM (GMT)
i find this incredibly difficult but will have to go with the damned, the clash and the pistols
stick them all on a bus and you've got the anarchy tour
the pistols are in there for the impact they created, for musical output i'd have to go for the buzzcocks as well as clash and damned but there is no denying the pistols and what they achieved.
otherdave - November 30, 2005 06:40 PM (GMT)
Adverts and Slits, they both changed my world in their early days... third-place tie between Penetration and the Subway Sect... Buzzcocks were ace before they went pop, Spex too. Funny how no-one lasted... except, well, you know who. 'Tis true, though, I fear ATV haven't aged well. Does that matter? I don't know.

EXACTLY
Terrance Stomp - December 1, 2005 10:06 AM (GMT)
Only chose one. Dunno why, not a statement or anything.
Buzzcocks. Their the only ones on the list still ringing my ting as i aquaplane towards 40 yrs like a jack-knifed family saloon and caravan on a very treacherous M4.
If theyd have been a british band the Dead Kennedys would be number two on the list.
Hotel Amnesia - December 1, 2005 10:43 AM (GMT)
It's no time to be 21 but I went for THE CLASH, THE BUZZCOCKS and SHAM 69.
One of my favourite songs of that time was 'Stranglehold' by UK SUBS but they're not mentioned and nor for that matter are The Ruts.
The Man Whose Bed Diminished - December 1, 2005 10:53 AM (GMT)
The usual suspects I'm afraid, ie Pistols, Buzzcocks and Siouxsie.
This was a close run thing though, and The Damned, Adam & The Ants and Slaughter & The Dogs were biting at their heels.
King Ink - December 2, 2005 07:30 AM (GMT)
Damned and Buzzcocks without a second thought
hard to choose between the Ants and Banshees though... went with Banshees...
although, i havn't heard quite a few of these... so it probably wasn't fair for me to vote

Had to think about this one but came to a conclusion that
the stuart pierce of the punk scene have done it for me
in terms of longevity THE BUZZCOCKS
in all their different incarnations on both sides of the pond
'ever fallen in love' still sounds as fresh as nearly 30 years ago
and thats some feat
i felt pete shelley and steve diggle were holding the live shambles together
on the televised uk hall of fame John Peel tribute spot
the cover version thats in the pop charts ( which has shelley on it ) is
not good but the proceeds go the charity championed by the late great
John Peel - amnesty so they are foregiven .
buzzcocks had a quality like atv and subway sect
and could play hardcore 1st generation punk rock
like the pistols damned stranglers banshees
only the slits were very very radical but didnt release much product
favourite tunes ; promises noise annoys love you more i look alone
energy what ever happened to? lester sands
still playable today without cringing

rainmaster - June 20, 2008 12:37 PM (GMT)
Siouxsie / Stranglers / Pistols, in that order! :applaud:
rainmaster - June 20, 2008 12:45 PM (GMT)
:banghead:
Just realised we have three votes - only voted for Siouxsie! DOH!!
anonyarena - June 25, 2008 08:35 PM (GMT)
It's THE FALL of course! Why aren't they allowed on here?
Brickah Chipah - June 25, 2008 08:45 PM (GMT)
my fairly pedestrian picks: Damned, Buzzcocks, Pistols
anonyarena - June 25, 2008 08:47 PM (GMT)
And why can't Wire be included?
Fritter - June 25, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
"Stranglers? Short-haired hippies" said J. Rotten, and it turned out he was right. But I still liked them in their day. Also The Damned's early energy hasn't dimmed. Buzzcocks also.
But with a few years' hindsight, The Slits cane them all.

Insofar it means anything (which it doesn't) Siouxsie was never "punk"- just a swastika wearing chancer who jumped on the coat-tails of a movement which was genuinely (at its best) rather noble and exciting.
I imagine her hit "Hong Kong Garden" still sets pulses racing...
"Slanted eyes meet a new sunrise
A race of bodies small in size
Chicken chow mein and chop suey
Hong kong garden takeaway"
They don't write them like that anymore.
Please- no-one say "satire".
