Title: A World Bewitched
Description: Album reviews

elucidus - January 15, 2004 02:46 PM (GMT)
Do I need this? I mean I've got most of the stuff on disc 1, except for The Caterer, Strychnine, Noels' Chemical Effluence and maybe one or two others (haven't checked) but I haven't got most of disc 2 (except Blood Outta Stone, Grudgeful and Ed's Babe). The only other thing I've even heard is I want You (which I remember as being great).

Is the rest worth the £8 it'll cost me, cheapskate that I am? I'm really talking about the slew of guest vocal stuff on disc 2 here. What's the music like? Are Mark's vocals compelling enough despite the music?

It was the positive posts in the 'Studio Albums I don't have' thread that drew my attention to it, but I've seen mixed reviews and I haven't the room or money for a curio that I'll just play twice.

Thanks.

Worth it for "Noel's..." on it's own, IMHO, if you haven't already got "27 Pints".

Personally think this one is well worth it, cd2 contains(if you haven't got them) the cuts off the Elastica ep, plug myself in, track off edwyn collins album etc etc, fills in a lot of holes, and methinks they are very nice holes....... :applaud:

One of my favourite Fall songs :) Does anyone have any info about it ? I take it that it's not a live recording.

Certainly doesn't sound live. Neither does "Cloud Of Black", also on "27 Pints", so I've always assumed that they were studio recordings which never got put onto a studio album.

Conway's discog says "Plus 2 studio outtakes, Cloud Of Black & Noel's Chemical Effluence, mixed in with live applause."

Thanks for the advice. I got it last night (I needed to get something in exchange for a serious 'experimental purchase' error which I was returning). Haven't listened to it properly but at the moment my opinion is 'OK' - I wish I was as excited as when I listened to Words of Expectation a couple of weeks ago. Thought 'I want You' was the best of the guest vocals and 'Noel' the best studio track. I think I should probably have got 'Wonderful and Frightening' instead, which is the major gap in my 80's stuff.

I was a bit peeved that they didn't include How I Wrote Elasticaman on this cd. Much prefer that to the Elastica track they included.

You need this one. It's an excellent compilation - even the familiar stuff sounds like it's been remastered. You really can't go wrong with it, and for £8.00 you'd be unwise to pass it up.

I bought this in Canada a couple of weeks ago because I hadn't heard "I'm a Mummy" & "Crying Marshall".

And so, to get the add-ons on side two was a bit of a bonus. I'm not sure why Canada still had this available after all this time, but I was a thrill, nevertheless.

Sadly, it cost $30+

Definitely.

Downloaded some tracks from this the other day (off Amazon, I paid for 'em...couldn't find them elsewhere) because I already have most of the stuff on it. Mainly the collaborations near the end of the second disc (Edwyn Collins, D.O.S.E etc)

My favourite by some way so far is I Want You (w/ Inspiral Carpets). A real head-nodder.

Also loving The Heads Of Dead Surfers, Plug Myself In, Seventies Night and Repetition.
The Stooges cover (w/ Clint Boon) is immense, but I've already had that for a few months.
