Description: Your predictions

Crank up your pre-cog now: how good will the new album be?
Dice Man - August 9, 2005 10:08 AM (GMT)
It will be pretty good - when it is a masterpiece the pleasure is double.
clayts - August 9, 2005 12:05 PM (GMT)
It will be a masterpiece, no question...
scratch - August 9, 2005 12:49 PM (GMT)
Based on the songs that we already know and assume will be on there, the album has a solid core with one true masterpiece (Blindness), so it will be pretty good. AT least as good as TRNFLP, maybe a little better.
Anon - August 9, 2005 01:33 PM (GMT)
At the moment, I'm going for pretty good. From what I've heard (the last Peel session and the Jools appearance), it sounds like they've got some good, road - tested material (and their best song for about 20 years in Blindness). It sounds like it should be a very good album, and one that should hopefully be better than the already pretty - good TRNFLP.
Not sure if it'll be a masterpiece like Hex or Perverted, but I reckon it's going to be a good listen at any rate.

I wonder if much off Interim will show up?
Vvillager - August 9, 2005 05:48 PM (GMT)
I'm hoping for a masterpiece since they've got the musicians, and they've been working on it for long enough, and Ed Blaney's not involved. I think that this band definitely want to make a good album rather than a Fall-by-numbers effort.
Davey B - August 9, 2005 06:02 PM (GMT)
Track 7 is my current fave. :)
Gaz - August 9, 2005 06:08 PM (GMT)
I think it'll be better then TRNFLP - But no masterpiece.
I hope and pray I'll be proven wrong by MES and Co.
fieryjack17 - August 9, 2005 10:02 PM (GMT)
I think it will be bloody good, which is better than pretty good whilst not quite attaining masterpiece level.
OK?

I will say masterpiece, considering that I would place RNFLP in this category, and that I would class Interim as "inspired"...
worthless recluse - August 10, 2005 11:21 AM (GMT)
I wonder if the "absolute rubbish" voter is the same person who votes for the unpopular choice in predicted shutouts in the Cup... reveal youself-ah!
JonN - August 10, 2005 12:03 PM (GMT)
"Venturesome Athlone Boy" is fun, but ultimately goes on too long (9 minutes). "What Is What" is just silly, ditto for "Indolent Face(s)". "Trev Bloods" is a mistake. "Baghdad Direktor" could do without the Rumsfeld samples. The rest of it is classic Fall, as good as "Cerebral Caustic" or "Code:Selfish".
mantpl - August 10, 2005 12:44 PM (GMT)
it's gonna be a masterpiece

thefrenzexperiment - August 10, 2005 12:58 PM (GMT)
All Fall albums are masterpieces compared to most things, but I think this one's gonna be pretty good.
If everything was as good as Blindness, it would be a masterpiece, but I think some of the other tracks like Ride Away are just OK.

None of those tracks are on it. It's all new material written in the studio.

R. Totale - August 10, 2005 04:32 PM (GMT)
Masterpiece - this is the best Fall line-up since Riley left. Live, this band wipes the floor with the late-80s Brixband.

Huh?
Radio 1 said both Grass Grow and What About Us are on it didn't they, and my sources tell me that Blindness is definitely on it....
Or maybe you were joking...?!
Ha ha....

:applaud: :applaud: :applaud: IT WILL BE A MASTER PIECE, NO QUESTION

Good god, it will just be OK. I thought the RNFLP was "pretty good," and this won't be as good as that.
I don't get all you people who think it will be a masterpiece. There is nothing, from live shows to Peel to Holland to studio tracks played on radio broadcasts, to show us that. "What About Us" is a functional song, period. It does NOT stand out in the Fall catalog. "Grass Grow" is a cover. Nicely done, but hardly indicative of what a Fall masterpiece would require.
As long as the Fall are aspiring to make a garage rock record, they won't be making masterpieces. The Fall need a heady, healthy mix of all their disparate influences, and this band simply doesn't have that. Regardless of how much I love 'em. What we're going to get is a slightly off-kilter sounding Hives record.

The bagpipes really beef it up. :)

A PLEASURABLE SUPRISE :applaud:
malevich - August 11, 2005 03:47 PM (GMT)
I suppose the Peel sessions give a reasonable idea of what it will sound like - ie. they're not going to turn it into the unutterable, but it would be nice to see some more prominent keyboards - they have a very nice sound at the moment. I think it's a step back from the Real New Fall, but I don't expect it to be less than 'good'.
thefrenzexperiment - August 11, 2005 05:17 PM (GMT)
The keyboards on the album version of What About Us are good and meaty.
I think they'll sound great on Blindness and Pacifying Joint too....
fallchase - August 12, 2005 12:50 AM (GMT)
heads roll with excitment for this album
I_Am_Not_Appreciated - August 15, 2005 03:41 PM (GMT)
Hmm, you know what? I voted for just OK but I mean BY FALL STANDARDS. I don't want to get myself worked up for this one as I've not been overwhelmed by the material so far with the exception of the Peel Blindness. I'm sure its all good stuff live, but it's just a bit too basic to be truly great and theres no amazing lyrical content. I don't disagree that the band is sounding healthy but its MES that seems a bit out of sorts at the moment ... controversial?
Martin - August 15, 2005 07:29 PM (GMT)
A masterpiece by garage standards. But I really am hoping for something other than only garage...think I may be disappointed, though. The new album will be much better live than on record.

I agree with you there. I'm REALLY looking forward to this album and think that musically it will be a masterpiece (due to me being a big fan of simple relentless riffs-what about us, blindness, pacifying joint). But when it comes to MES i really want him to pull off the sort of lyrical brilliance shown on tracks like Garden or C'N'Cs, and to be honest, I cant see it happening.
Martin - August 15, 2005 08:19 PM (GMT)
I don't think he cares as much as he did about lyrics. Or maybe he's said all he wants to say. It happens. How many lyricists go on producing great lyrics all their lives? How many actually improve? So he's not unusual in this.

Curious Yellow - August 15, 2005 08:27 PM (GMT)
I think he still has it in him - stuff on the post nearly man is great and that wasn't too long ago, plus there are recent tracks with great lyrics like Dr. Buck's, Serum, cropdust, The Past, Last Commands.
Martin - August 15, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
Still in him...but too many tracks with throwaway lyrics these days. Poll time!!
I_Am_Not_Appreciated - August 16, 2005 07:15 AM (GMT)
None of the newer material that has been played live has any of the MES lyrical hallmarks which makes me wonder whether most of the songs intended for the forthcoming album that have been played live have been written by the band with the view that MES will do his thing with them at a later stage.
Perhaps MES wants to encourage his band to be more lyrically creative and not feel that is only his domain. Or perhaps he just can't be bothered anymore ...
gappy tooth - August 16, 2005 08:26 AM (GMT)
I suspect it will be an excellent rock LP, but not one of the ones that really hits me. I imagine it to be one of their straightforward LPs, like Code: Selfish for example. It'll probably grow slowly on us all, but not knock our iconic faves from their perches.
Naturally, this being The Fall, I actually have no bleedin idea
up2much - August 16, 2005 08:50 AM (GMT)
It may disappoint us lot with our live bootlegs, recent much played Peel boxsets and having seen them on tour playing brilliantly recently. Some of it is already going to be familiar, so there won't be that many 'new' songs, although that doesn't matter to prosperity or its longevity. It will be garagey but will probably lack that weird experimental edge. However, this is not really a bad thing, as all the richnesses the Fall provide can be found in really garagey stuff.
The only thing I'm really nervous about, which could ruin the whole thing for me, is whether the production will be shit. It's been in the can so long, has it been overworked and excessively fiddled with?
Blue Moth - August 16, 2005 07:29 PM (GMT)
Fuckng wild, it will be
Nd verily a runaway hit song...
The song titles themsleves lead me to believe there will be new territory explored and conquered by the forces of The Mighty Fall -ness.
