Title: Interesting television
Description: What's on ya TV?
S5 not Manc - January 28, 2005 10:54 PM (GMT)
Well, why not we have both a CD and DVD thread, why not have a TV thread. We also have a what are you reading thread, which is simalar to these.
On my TV at the moment is Ricky Gervais - Animals on Channel 4, all I can say is what a load of shite. Some funny moments and I mean some, but on a whole he just can't do stand up. I am not really a big fan of the Office either, I thought it was a really over-rated show. Ricky Gervais is a shit comedian, his comedy is just stating the obvious and has no original qualities, Saying that I am slating him, but I am going to watch the end of this show to see how it turns out. I really can't see it going anywhere though.
Jouster - January 28, 2005 11:08 PM (GMT)
I'm a big fan of the Office, actually, but I'll agree regarding Ricky Gervais. It's a shame, but I find that the best comedic actors rarely have the chops to do solid stand-up (and vice-versa).
I don't board and watch TV at the same time but earlier I was watching a rerun of The Daily Show. It's so amazingly great these days.

The only reason why I watch TV while I am online, is that I have a TV right at the side of me, otherwise I wouldn't either.

It's the prog about Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon which I reckon you'll be watching too S5 not Manc?
Also watched Ricky Gervais and thought him poor till the last bit - the slide show of gay animal porn.
DJAsh - January 29, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
"The Lost World of Mitchell and Kenyon"...recently rescued film of life in Britain from around 1900. Much of it from Lancs and Yorks.....brilliant and fascinating.

Yeah the last bit of the Ricky Gervais thing was allright. I didn't see the Pink Floyd thing though, I turned it over straight after. If I would of knew the Pink Floyd thing was on though I would of watched it.

Ricky Gervais played a fascinating bomb expert out for revenge on an episode of Alias. Straight up drama... the character never even smiles. Extremely effective.
Green - January 29, 2005 12:23 AM (GMT)
On regular television, usually a bit of the local news, then check to see if there's anything interesting on the History Channel, Discovery Times, or National Geographic. A bit of Fox Sports News for some true football info, and then a final check of any of the HBO channels for a movie or series like Curb or Ali G. I'll catch The Office if it's on BBC America, or something like American Chopper on Discovery if I flip through it, and usually VHI Classic will play some "alternative" videos for an hour a couple of times a week (still haven't seen a Fall video yet.........)
As for what's physically ON my tv, just a bobblehead doll of NY Mets catcher Mike Piazza. Don't really know why, it just looks good there.

Yeah, his deadpan nosmile is straight down the line (and the source of serious cringe material in the Office.)
Watched Keith Barrett tonight who's hilarious in a similar way in looking totally ingenuous and sincere in his lack of amusement at things.

On my downstairs TV there's just a home cinema centre speaker.
On my upstairs PC there's a video sender receiver, a wireless computer mouse, four cassettes (The Fall live at Liverpool 8/2/86/G Mex 19/7/86; John Peel sessions taped off the radio Oct to Dec 1988; Norwich Sound City 92 tape - Fall on side A, Basti on side B; John Peel sessions taped off the radio Aug to Nov 1989), a box of matches, 33p (a 20p, two 5ps and three pennies), two silver sleeper earrings, various documents (eg expenses payment remittance advice, payslip, letters from creditors) and lots of dust.
All right for you ?

Allright mate, maybe I worded the thread title wrong. Here is what the title should say, What Are You Watching On Your TV? ;)
thefrenzexperiment - August 8, 2005 06:19 PM (GMT)
Thought I'd start this thread, mainly to plug the edition of Dispatches that is on tonight (Monday 8th August), Channel 4, 8pm, but also because I thought it would be useful for plugging any other potentially interesting programmes rather than starting new threads for them all.
Anyway, Dispatches tonight is called 'Why Bomb London'. I think the programme will be particularly interesting for anyone who took part in the sadly-closed Bombs in London thread.
The Sunday Times says in its preview:-
| QUOTE |
| Much has been made of the inevitability of the recent bomb attacks in London, but this documentary seeks to establish if they were avoidable. Deborah Davies analyses whether a series of foreign policy decisions, as well as errors in domestic, social, and political policy, made the threat of terrorism a reality, and if these flaws allowed known extremists to settle in London and form a network, despite warnings from overseas governments. |
There's also another part in 'The New Al-Qaeda' series on BBC2 at 9pm.
VBTS - August 8, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
A bit after the fact, but did anyone catch the Jazz Britannica series on BBC 2 on Friday nights? I was excellent. Nice to see the likes of Evan parker, John Stevens, Matthew Herbert, etc get a mention or be interviewed!
thefrenzexperiment - August 8, 2005 08:33 PM (GMT)
I watched the first one. I'm not a big jazz fan, but I'm interested in the history of almost any music.
VBTS - August 9, 2005 12:32 PM (GMT)
Did you watch 'Soul Deep'? That, too, was ace!

Brand new Roobarb and Custard on Channel 5 every day at 8.45am.
Apparently the animation still wobbles and Richard Briers still narrates.
I shall try to check it out tomorrow morning!
Harry Lime - August 9, 2005 04:30 PM (GMT)
If anybody was thinking of recording MES getting his Diesel U Matic award thing this Sunday morning, Channel 4 have changed the broadcast time. Its on later because of some cricket. New time is 01:05 to 02:10, early hours of Sunday 14th August.
Best add another hour on to the end of the recording if cricket is on first, play it safe.
R. Totale - August 9, 2005 04:51 PM (GMT)
Don't miss Blue Cow in the Bedtime Hour on CBeebies.

So did anyone else watch Dispatches last night?
Nothing particularly new, but I thought it did a good job of summarising the rise of Muslim extremism in this country over the last 10 years.
thefrenzexperiment - August 9, 2005 05:33 PM (GMT)
I'm quite looking forward to Lost on Channel 4 tomorrow night.
It's had a great critical reception in the States and has a Golden Globe nomination for best New Drama Series.

I never get tired of reruns of Twin Peaks! Or Serling's Twilight Zone, for that matter ... but Twin Peaks, Fuck thats a great show ... "This is a DAMN good cup of coffee"
thefrenzexperiment - August 9, 2005 05:45 PM (GMT)
Both great shows.
Twin Peaks was truly incredible, baffling, ground-breaking television. One of Lynch's greatest achievements.
I'd love it on DVD. Incredibly, I haven't seen it since it was first shown in 1990.

I read it on Channel 4's Teletext DVD pages, recently. No definite date was given.
swintax - August 9, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
Just finshed on Channel 4. The best and Worst places to live in the UK..
Salford makes the shit list, with its pink fkin bins and pink fkin signs. Ninth worth place in the UK to live
Eccles Connection? Whats your take on this?
oh, Hulls is the worst. I have to agree, what a shit hole!
thefrenzexperiment - August 10, 2005 09:00 AM (GMT)
I'd love a pink bin....!
Ours are boring black. And brown for the compost bin....

Same here that - I'll always read or watch music stuff, besides obvious fluff (Brits, Smash hits... You know the one)
Can't recomend any telly though as, and I've said this before I know, I don't watch any.
Still, I always flick through the TV mag to see if I fancy anything.
I wouldn't have minded watching that new Ricky Gervais thing, interesting idea for a show, but I'm not enthusiastic enough for the bloke to watch the mind-numb box.
I think the last show I sat all the way through was The Fall on Jools Holland.
Saying that, I switched that off when I was sure the Fall wouldn't be popping back up...

I don't think Extras has been that well-received.
I think it's brilliant personally. Too many people were expecting an Office retread, and it's very different.

I really would recommend giving Lost on C4 tonight a go. It sounds excellent.

Only seen the Ross Kemp/Vinnie Jones one. Not one.. single.. solitary.. laugh. The worst kind of celebrity end-of-term goofing about.
I've never witnessed such a sharp decline, at least not since the Ali G persona immediately stopped being funny when he was given his own show.
