I presume a number of Australians saw Smith and Riley fighting. Each other.
According to Riley: "he hit me..and I had the gaul to hit him back...considerably harder! Ha ha..."

If it was Asterix or Obelix, I'm not surprised!

in the light of me in-depth analysis of pbl dvd and considering the analysis of the lyrics to middlemass

| "Soft mitts" refers to Riley's ineffectuality as a fighter |
i thought it would be fun to see mark [alan minter] smith have a fight with marc [soft mitts lardy boy] riley to prove once and for all who is top dog hard man of these 2. vote now...the winner will be when the votes stop coming in....which might be pretty soon i guess.
fallfandave - May 17, 2003 02:19 PM (GMT)
3 -0 so far for lardy boy :D
...first one to 10 is the winner
fallfandave - May 17, 2003 08:24 PM (GMT)
karl burns v ringo....a new thread ....karl burns i guess...he is alive still ringo?...or r they all dead?...lol....mccartney thinks he's alive

what will it take to get the beatles back together!
begs to be said
fallfandave - May 17, 2003 10:03 PM (GMT)
well it is one of me fave lines...y did u think of this question anyway?
fallfandave - May 17, 2003 10:06 PM (GMT)
5-1 to lardy boy ....mes is lookin a bit cut up in the red nose corner....but it's early days lets see what happens in this next 'round'
fallfandave - May 17, 2003 10:14 PM (GMT)
did i ever tell yer bout the time i was chattin to lardy boy....well he just kept sayin how iggy would leather me cos he does weights...but i dunno...a small man against a big man...yer dont have the reach...mind u it would have taken me 5 mins to realise he had already punched me...so maybe he was right..i think he must have a thing about fightin..i never brought it up
fallfandave - May 19, 2003 09:47 PM (GMT)
well i met both face 2 face...n while mark gives yer the hard man stare.....it seems like compensation....whilst riley is dead chatty n ....a bit daft [i know he's clever]...so i think he avoids fights...but if it was life n death...mmm dunno ...close one...mark would be more likely to get into a fight though...cos of his temperament...but lately he seems to wisely avoid em..old age it comes to us all...keep a grenade in yer pocket ...top tip for all u oap i fought in the war types
fallfandave - May 23, 2003 04:04 PM (GMT)
 7 to lardy boy yes, with his cunningly concealed  gauls! ha...it is turning into a rulebreaking WWF fight this... i can't see mes winning this one somehow... :applaud: come on lardy boy finish him off..whack him with yer gauls again!!! :)

Marc Riley has a definite advantage over MES nowadays. He can stand up unassisted. :P
Punk John - May 17, 2003 09:49 PM (GMT)
I salute your ability to use Marc Riley With The Creepers lyrics in such a fine fashion! :D
Zedkah - May 17, 2003 08:09 PM (GMT)
While you are at it could karl Burns have Ringo Starr?
Perhaps those with the Perv by L(bis) DVD could analyse the headlock scene in eat Yrself video for clues.
Zedkah - May 18, 2003 10:34 AM (GMT)
I voted for Mark as I reckon he'd use Mark e of Queensbury rules, employing mike stands and telephones. Marc would fear for his next tv prtesenter contract if he lost his looks and would "I Dont need this" off on his pointy shoes.

Blimey, I saw this thread and I thought - I'll say something about Smith being wrong getting rid of Riley, and I'd already hinted at the same thing years ago!
I think it was a daft thing to do, Riley was very inventive I thought.

Apparently things were getting "too melodic".
Hence PBL contained very little melody, but was still a classic all the same. MES knew what he was doing. ;)

well, yes and no. He probably could have ended it with Riley on better terms and without poisoning the air so much that there was no chance of him coming back later, or, at the very least, avoiding fisticuffs. It is possible that the situation was so bad that there was no better way of resolving things. Possible, but very, very unlikely.

I've always found the idea of MES being 'hard' - a notion he never misses an opportunity to propogate - as completely laughable.

I've wondered about that myself, but didn't Bramah say that in the early days MES was always scrapping. Or something?

"it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog"
an old time baseball player, Johnny Evers, a Hall of Fame member, was always looking for a fight and found plenty. He weighed 127 pounds.
He had to sit out one year because he was institutionalized - bi-polar probably but 100 years ago, who knew?

The twerp who threw the banana at MES in Phoenix in 2006 (Justin Williams of The Talk), alleged that MES followed him into the parking with his fists up Queensberry style.
I looked for but can't find the reference.

Erm - I beg to differ - I've seen him being very cross, and it's not nice. Very scary. He did apologies with much sincerity afterwards though and all was good.
flickeringlexicon - July 29, 2010 04:49 PM (GMT)
Even on live recordings, when you hear MES getting angry, it sounds pretty intimidating. "Right, Rex!"
Then, there's the thrashing he administers here:

Which doesn't mark you hard though, does it? It may make you a verbal bully, but not hard.

Yeah, but the average height of a Patagonian is 4"11".

He certainly wasn't bullying - he was making his point - albeit in a very stern way. Seeing as the guy he was arguing against was about 6ft 3 and built like the God of Thunder, it looked pretty hard to me. Needless to say, the God of Thunder backed down.

Which sound like 'short man syndrome'. Symptoms include; getting mouthy and aggressive, trusting the other person will just back down, not being able to throw a punch. :)

I did happen. The band played on, Ben, Steve and Spen. The final straw for them.
MES apologises when he gets back to the stage.
I don't think Smith is as hard fight-wise, as generally perceived. Think Sid Vicious and Ollie Reed. Pussies.
That said, there are enough documented occasions when MES left the stage to deal with wankers. Hecklers, beer throwers et al..
One Fall fantasy fight i would pay to see would be Ed (Broker) Blaney Vs. Neville ( Brass Knuckles) Wilding. ^_^
Ye gods there would be blood, teeth and snot. Two big lumps slugging it out.
Not big or clever, buy hey? Only in one's imagination..
