Title: Most lumbering dinosaur
Description: the worst of the worst?
gorillabat - January 2, 2005 01:03 AM (GMT)
I could have added Yes, Moody Blues, Chicago, etc.
Personally I gotta go with Doobie Bros. how fuckin' godawful. Really dislike Skynyrd and other southern rock guys.
Hate the Eagles too, but I always thought Joe Walsh was a cool stoner.
Who have I forgotten? And who is the worst?
JTosti2 - January 2, 2005 01:18 AM (GMT)
The Rolling Stones and The Who.
Shameless.
gorillabat - January 2, 2005 01:23 AM (GMT)
Indeed, both of those bands fit the dinosaur category and have long since exceeded their expiration date. (Look for the Who's 13th "Farewell Tour" later this decade...)
However, I kept it to amerikan dinosaurs because they seem to be the most terrible. At least the most commonly-heard on these shores.
Too, The Stones and The Who both have some cred left over from their earlier phases when both bands actually produced good music. I would argue that none of the above bands ever produced anything of worth.
Though I shamefacedly admit that in my younger drunken days I used to bob my head to ZZTop radioboogiefare from time to time. Never owned a record by 'em though.
DJAsh - January 2, 2005 01:31 AM (GMT)
I've never heard Kansas.
I'll go for The Eagles cos every Eagles "aficionado" I know is a tosser. All 2 of them.
Green - January 2, 2005 02:58 AM (GMT)
Never understood the appeal of the Doobies at all, the tunes I heard when they broke were highly irritating, and then when Micheal what'shisface turned them into a bland version of Hall & Oates (no small accomplishment, I suppose..... :D ),......well, let's just say I was damn glad I had the Clash, Talking Heads, and others to listen to...
Same feeling about Joe Walsh here, Life's Been Good was an absurd look at pop stardom ( and just plain absurd pop song as well.)
G-bat, you would've hated the really lame ringtone I heard today at Target, which was Sweet Home Alabama by Skynrd, imagine the cheesy electronic tones trying to reproduce that intro......... again made me damn glad I've got Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express on mine...
strifeknot - January 2, 2005 06:39 AM (GMT)
The bands in the poll were never that good to begin with in my estimation, so it's a stretch to argue they've fallen off. The biggest decline in quality among active bands surely belongs to The Rolling Stones.
If you insist on sticking with American bands, then I'd say R.E.M. has become the biggest disappointment to me. Their first three LPs were fresh, vital, and much needed at the time in the indie rock scene. Now the band's a joke. Michael Stipe is the American Bono, minus the leather jacket and the Christianity.

The Eagles by a country mile. Shallow, stupid, sexist lyrics, cliche ridden music, and Hotel California, a prime candidate for worst album of all time. And Walsh is every bit a goon as Henley and Frey, just not a redneck like them. The only mildly interesting stuff Walsh ever did was with the James Gang, and even that wasn't all that great.
If memory serves, John McFee is still in the Doobie Brothers, so I have to give them a little bit of credit for that. I saw them on TV a while back, and McFee was the only band member doing anything interesting at all. So for those who are into good music but get dragged to a Doobies gig by a significant other, McFee can make it tolerable. He's by far the most accomplished musician in the band. He also played lead guitar on Elvis Costello's first album. My only question is, why is he wasting time in the Doobies?

Well, REX beat me to it... Styx really ought to be up there, several times, so I can vote for them to my hate-filled heart's content...
The Eagles... Beyond atrocious... Is it true that their Greatest Hits LP is one the biggest selling records (if not THE biggest) of all time? Well then... we are very near the end of human civilization...
Honorable mention to ZZ Top, who are greatly responsible (whether they know it or not) for propelling the "video" age of the music industry further and faster headlong into the morass of crass, skullrotting nonsense it has become. Growing up, if I'd had a nickel for every time I saw the reprehensible videos for "Legs," "Sharp Dressed Man," etc...
Man, I'd have a shitload of nickels...
gorillabat - January 2, 2005 08:56 AM (GMT)
I would like to apologize for the egregious oversight of leaving Styx off this list. Shit hell yes. Terrible. (See, I thought this would be fun.) I was forcefed that shit album Paradise Theatre by Styx many times in my youth by my older sister. Hate HATE!
(aside: when I was living in Chicago, Dennis DeYoung, frilly haired Styx vocalist/keys player was playing Jesus in a production of either Godspell or JC Superstar. Puke blood.)
Milkcan, I share your lousy memories of the lousy ZZ Top videos of the 80s. Christ almighty. You couldn't be in a room with a damn TV in it without seeing that shit.

I have heard this was one of the biggest sellers. But get this-- last year I was in Romania for several weeks and I heard the Eagles Greatest Hits everywhere. It was as if it was the only amerikan album that had been imported into the country.
As much as Eagles are/were total shit, though, something about the Doobie's music pisses me off the most. "Old black water, keep on rolling" and "doo-do-do-do-do-do-doo DOO! Jesus is just alright OH YEAH!" Get me outta here.
Eagles are the blandest, ZZ Top the goofiest, Styx were so pretentious it was fun just to make fun of them, but Doobie Bros just piss me off so much.
I hate Supertramp too.

Does anyone else remember the cool rainbow-colored image embedded in the grooves on the Paradise Theater LP? Best thing about the album!
generalist - January 2, 2005 11:20 AM (GMT)
a bit off topic - but seeing the (dreadful) eagles mentioned reminded me of a contemporary band called 'eagles of death metal' what a great name! their track 'i only want you' sung in a high pitched almost falsetto is hysterical! a lot of fun.....
REX - January 2, 2005 01:47 PM (GMT)
A DeYoung-less Styx is back, right now!, with a live cover of "I Am the Walrus."
And strangely, I just can't seem to hate Supertramp. Right? Right. Bloody well right.

I trust a "Favorite Styx Album" poll wouldn't be appreciated then. For me, "Paradise Theater" is over-rated, I tend to go for "Cornerstone" or "Pieces of Eight." But then the influential "Kilroy Was Here" has its charms. And as a summation, can we really do without the arena-rock sound of their swansong live album, "Caught in the Act"? ;)
How about an Osmonds poll? Apparently their "heavy rock" album "Phase Three" is one of the worst albums ever recorded.
Andy
gorillabat - January 2, 2005 02:40 PM (GMT)
Okay, I like that "Take a look at my girlfriend" song by Supertramp. Crucify me. They are a bit less offensive than some of these others.

Yes! I did think that was cool, but far better was the Split Enz album True Colors that came in several different colored covers and had that laser etching op-art design on the vinyl.

The Osmaonds actually were listening to a lot of Black Sabbath and KISS at the time and wanted, I have heard, to start a heavy rock band as a side project that was to be called The Purple Brick or something like that. Their wholesome parents and record execs freaked out, so they just put out the one "heavy" album and went back to appealing to puppy love teenyboppers.
Crazy Horses is a pretty cool song from their heavy phase. Funny. Was covered by some industro band in the late 80s. Nitzer Ebb maybe? REX?
Vvillager - January 2, 2005 05:22 PM (GMT)
If we stick to the Americam bands listed, then my vote goes to The Eagles - whingey, whiney music that never really takes off, ironically. I have a soft spot for Joe Walsh though. Rocky Mountain Way was a favourite of young rockers everywhere, and Hotel California is the only Eagles track that I have been able to enjoy.
I still have a soft spot for many dinosaurs though, since I am one myself. There's stuff that I enjoy from most of the Brit candidates (should anybody make a list). If I had to nominate a Brit band, it would be Dire Straits.

Oh fuck some of these bands are awfull... Ok, Lynard Skynard are the *Least* offencive, but The Eagles? :gun:
Btw, i admit to a fondness of the Osmunds "Crazy Horses" :zip:
Gaz - January 2, 2005 05:53 PM (GMT)
Oh, and how could you fail to metion Crosby, Stills and Nash ?
And thats coming from a Niel Young fan.....
The Eccles Connection - January 2, 2005 07:16 PM (GMT)
http://www.progarchives.com/Try this out if you want to really wallow in pre-historic nostalgia!
I've gone for Skynrd on the basis of all that "heart of Southern rock n roll" crap
Cant disagree with any of others and especially the comments re Styx (see above link!!!) and any of the sub-Yes overblown crap that follwed them
Not so sure about CSN - as far as I know Nash is now a photographer - and he should not be bad mouthed as he's a Salford lad! :D
DJAsh - January 2, 2005 09:39 PM (GMT)
Theres been some really annoying chart friendly hardcore records in the UK recently which sampled Supertramp.

In terms of dodgy metal, at least they were laughing at themselves - members of Fu Manchu, QOTSA etc? Shite, but amusing none the less?!?
Crazy Horses?!? I used to think that one was by some remotedly quality group!!!Was gutted when the realisation it was some mis-westwern USA shite became reality!!!

Actuley, Nash was born in Blackpool and moved here when he was 5 or 6....
Why the hell do i know this stuff??!! :D
Jean-Baptiste Clamence - January 17, 2005 07:36 PM (GMT)
Although the bands on the list are all depressingly MOR, stadium rock turds, and far, far worse IMO, I can't help but feel a bit guilty for being partial to bit of Creedence Clearwater from time to time :ohdear:
Please say it's not the same!!!
gorillabat - January 17, 2005 07:53 PM (GMT)
I don't think it's the same. I get tired real quick of John Fogerty's vocals, and John Fogerty in general, but I'll admit to some guilty CCR listens now and then. Don't own any, but I'd think of it.
Steve Malkmus from Pavement once spoke nicely about the value of CCR and the way their songs stand up.
I seem to detect some quality in their stuff that is lacking or turned sour in these other bands. Maybe it's just fond memories of hearing them when I was a kid, but then why wouldn't I have fond memories of hearing these other bands?

For several years I had to do these long 2 day drives in the midwest, with no tape deck in the car... which meant HOURS of crap radio. I came very quickly to appreciate CCR as a rare bright spot among all the muck: I think they're tremendous, actually.

No-one mentioned my faves - JOURNEY!!!This band have never made any impression in the UK by the way. The Fall are much bigger than Journey here.

Phew! I can now safely out myself as a fah-lamin' CCR fan. Green River's me fave, but let's never speak of this again.
