Title: Lack of interviews with Mr Smith
Conway - May 26, 2003 09:25 AM (GMT)
What makes you lot think I could get an interview? What makes you lot think I would want to get an interview?!
Stefan's more likely to, given that he's met the man before and he's likely to see him again fairly soon in Boston.
Conway - May 26, 2003 09:29 AM (GMT)
He has done several radio chats in the last 12 months. The one with Bruce Dickheadinson (from Iron Maiden, te he he) was quite amusing. Maybe he's sick of the print media.
I tried to hook up a guy from Jack magazine earlier this year, just before Jim left, but I don't think he ever got any answers. He used to visit the other board I think - any luck kek?

i dont wanna talk to him....he's a moody twat
Itchload - May 25, 2003 06:29 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I agree. I'd like to see some more recent interviews. The fact that Mark showed up for Smiths week on that radio MP3 seemed very odd, especially since I can't imagine Mark ever listening to the Smiths, almost like he did it just to have his songs played on the radio, which seemed very unlike him.
Conway, didn't you say Mark is constantly saying the lyrics on the site are all wrong? That would mean he stops by once in awhile. He also laughed in recognition and said he saw it on the website when an interviewer asked about Susan Vs. Youthclub being a ripoff of some show. So maybe some sort of interview could be done, the only interview I've ever read of him where he seemed in a good mood was that one with the fans from 2 years back.

Its gonna happen!....If anyone can do it CONWAY CAN :D
or maybe Mark just don't like us no mo.. :(

I've always loved Smithy holding forth in the press, but if it doesn't happen anymore, well, so be it - the records seem to speak even louder for themselves without the interviews.
Does anyone still bother with the NME? It's largely disappeared from Australian newsagents the past two years and it's gotta be due to the internet.... I've only had regular internet access since 2000, and the big impetus for eventually (and rather reluctantly) getting hooked up was to find out what MES was up to - with no conventional media coverage (especially since about '97) I was terrified he'd drink himself to death and I'd never know....
Actually, do you think the 'net saved the Fall - usenet/Fallnet goes way back, doesn't it, and it must've played a huge part in keeping interest in MES and co bubbling along....
Wretched Timesheeter - May 25, 2003 08:59 PM (GMT)
I'd like to see some more interviews with Mark too. Last year's Independent thing and the interview with Studybees were good, but even about five years ago interesting Smith interviews were ten a penny. Maybe it's because The Fall are rarely signed to a record label for more than a few minutes or because of management problems, meaning that interviews are hard to get hold of. Or maybe it's because Mark's bored or hasn't got much to say about the current state of things (but I can't possibly imagine that). Still, I can hardly imagine the likes of the NME (especially considering the dismal state it's in nowadays) banging down Smith's door for an opinion these days....
Grimo - May 25, 2003 04:09 AM (GMT)
One of the worst things about following The Fall in recent years has been the lack of interviews. In the late 80s and early 90s they were two a dozen, but they've slowed down to a trickle recently. This is disappointing as one of the things I liked was the mix of intelligence, sharpness and menace Mark shows. The lack of recent one's makes me wonder about Mark's state: is he washed up and apathetic about things? Ceratinly, the apathy in the last few releases hint at it. Still, in saying this, there's enough on 2G and AYAMW to merit their release.
I know MES doesn't publically admit he likes the Internet but couldn't Conway get an interview in? What's stopping this happening?

Deliberately bumping the oldest deadest thread on the board, just because.
Also, did anyone ever actually investigate the possibility of getting a FOF interview with MES? Ideally a Reddit style AMA, where people post questions and he answers them, or not, according to his whims, as in: IAMA Mark E Smith, leader of The Fall, AMA

Couldn't hurt to ask. Does anyone here have a contact line to the great man himself?

Aha! Thanks. I've hardly ever looked at that page - I think of Fall News as the home page.
Ok, interview/Q&A request has been sent. I'll let you know the outcome.

I'm in Prestwich next weekend. Shall I give him a knock?

I think interviews are given solely to promote albums/tours, these days, so I seriously doubt he'll do anything like this - as he doesn't need to promote anything to us.
Also, I'm not entirely sure that his feelings towards the forum are benign.
I think he "loves" the fans as a whole, but I would be surprised if he didn't feel general ambivalence about the FOF.
We're only a small minority of fans afterall...

He often does interviews when he has nothing to promote (as it were).
But I also really don't think he'd do something for here.

Not for a long time.

Fantastic Man. Maybe other stuff since then if I could be arsed to check (though there was a period recently when they had no press officer, which made arranging interviews tricky).
I get the impression he does most things he's asked - though is wary of the national press and music mags unless he has something to promote...

The Fantastic Man interview was over five years ago - autumn/winter 2006... right before a tour.
