Title: Elena Poulou
Conway - May 24, 2003 10:55 AM (GMT)
I'm keeping out of this one. Too early to tell.
fallfandave - May 24, 2003 09:01 AM (GMT)
back to basics i guess......i love it/her.....i mean her playing....julie nagle is gr8 too... if not better!.....her playing i mean
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - May 24, 2003 08:55 AM (GMT)
So, what does everyone think of Poulou's keyboard playing?
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - May 26, 2003 11:25 AM (GMT)
I think the band's current line-up is the best since Scanlon/Hanley left.

That picture from the Sandy Eggo gig* where Elanor is smoking is sweet. But seriously, I haven't heard enough. Funny really - there's keyboards on 90% of The Fall's output and I'm stuck for something to say. Looks like a return to keyboard minimalism, I guess.
* Also, is that Steve Evets on bass? He looks TERRIFYING. EDIT: It isn't. Still scary, though.
DQuinn - June 20, 2003 10:25 PM (GMT)
the less keyboards the better, so it sounds like Poulou is doing a good job. For some reason the cheap casio stuff doesn’t really bug me, but when that synth shit starts up… aaarrrgghhh! It just takes all the guts outta the group. Sorry Nagle… Good rule: never use more than two fingers at a time & one is better & none is probably best.
Punk John - June 20, 2003 11:05 PM (GMT)
OK, based on the last Peel Session, I am very much a fan of the new keyboard player.
If this frustratingly-unreleased LP contains more songs like that sesh then I will be a very happy Fall fan. Again. I mean, it's not as if they've not delighted me a few thousand times already. :D
Adam's II - June 21, 2003 01:01 AM (GMT)
I miss nagle, Poulou is fine (as in how could MES get a fine girl like that)but nagle was actually a talented musician. I don't see Poulou adding alot to Susan Vs. Youthclub except for some scintillating smoking(but that's cool too)
fallfandave - June 21, 2003 06:41 AM (GMT)
yes more smoking poulou pics plz......keep sendin em in :applaud:
fallfandave - June 21, 2003 06:51 AM (GMT)
better than su tissue :) er what's this band about? oh music yeah! nearly forgot
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - June 21, 2003 10:00 AM (GMT)
She certainly looks a lot more comfortable in the band.
I think she''ll be better put to use on the album. But I like her indifference to whats going on around her, it's kind of funny.
Conway - June 21, 2003 10:08 AM (GMT)
The album was recorded 6 months ago and I think Jim played most of the keyboards on it.
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - June 21, 2003 10:50 AM (GMT)
Maybe Mark will replace Jim's playing with Elanors? That could be one of the reasons he's changing some of the tracks.
And after all, she has been with him for quite a while now (at least since AYAMW), perhaps she was included in the CotC recordings.
Conway - June 23, 2003 10:22 AM (GMT)
With a bit of luck, Jim will tell us who played what during the recording sessions when he next visits.

Rock girls. Sexy girls. Crazy girls. Berlin girls.
This month I am obsessed with girls. Chicks. Women. Ladies. Bitches.
Uh oh. Uh oh. Uh oh…trouble…
I wanted to end my month with Melt Banana, believe me I did. But instead it was Zen Faschisten. Although I think singer/drummer Denute wins the prize for being the most drop-dead gorgeous of the Berlin rock chicks with her Barbie waif sex kitten persona, when I first saw her perform with the Narcotics, she irritated me with her presentation (Nico-esque monotone meets German fetish queen). I also thought for awhile she was being overly precious with her beauty but then I finally realised that she was continually so stoned she was just concentrating hard on keeping her eyes open or getting from A to B in her heels. I only realised that after I myself had a blast off the little pipe she carries around... As for ex-Narcotic Eleny, who cameoed with the Zen Faschisten, she’s gone and married Mark.E. Smith of the Fall, ain’t she? – well, we are all jealously reading the headlines: “Berlin Rock Girl Makes Good”.
Conway - June 24, 2003 12:05 AM (GMT)
Zen Faschisten is/are namechecked in the credits to Pander! Panda! Panzer! Sleeve by Elanor S - crossed out > Lazy Lady E.P.
Poulou! Poulou! Poulou! ^_^
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - June 24, 2003 10:13 AM (GMT)
What kind of band are the Narcotics?
Poulou looks really different in these San Diego pictures. No time to get made up, I suppose.
Wish I knew what she was saying on Sparta F.C. Speaking in German/Greek perhaps?
Durruti - June 24, 2003 05:38 PM (GMT)
Anybody see The Fall on 'Made in the North West' (ITV Granada) a couple of months ago? Young Elanor was superb in the instrumental version of 'Behind the Counter' (I suspect it was an instrumental cos Smith couldn't be bothered/was too pissed to get on stage... :D ) Preedy good on 'Green Eyed Loco Man' too (this time with The Man)
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - June 26, 2003 12:04 PM (GMT)
Just getting Jims attention:
Is Elanor on CotC?
Adam's II - July 1, 2003 06:09 AM (GMT)
she was awful on "made in the NW"couldn't play a lick!!! I miss Nagle
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - July 1, 2003 09:31 AM (GMT)
Nagle was too...capable.
I liked seeing Poulou play in MitNW. I though she was looked sworried because Mark didn't get up ...
...but she's like that all the time!
Wretched Timesheeter - July 1, 2003 10:17 PM (GMT)
Her eye make-up is better than mine.
Erm, for the record, I'm not a goth. I'm going to get my head kicked in for saying that, aren't I?
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - July 2, 2003 12:45 PM (GMT)
I think she did the keyboard for XYRALOTHEP.
That is such a great song.
sdOK - July 2, 2003 01:16 PM (GMT)
No that was me.
Eloner is on the past and all the peel session.
And Zen Faschisten are pretty cool. Eloner gave me a couple of singles that were ace. Great covers too.
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - July 3, 2003 01:00 AM (GMT)
That was really great keyboard on XYRALOTHEP, Jim. And on Mountain Energei.

I heard Acid Head, and I really liked that. Do you know where I can get any more, or do I have to go all the way to Berlin to get them?
Wretched Timesheeter - July 3, 2003 05:05 PM (GMT)
Oh, that reminds me. Hey Jim!
What sort of setup did you use to get those keyboard sounds on Susan vs Youthclub / COTC tracks?
sdOK - July 3, 2003 06:36 PM (GMT)
Cool. I love talking techie stuff.
Susan V's was half some sounds from VSTi's absynth and FM7 and a waldorf modular. The album stuff was a hammond b3, a yamaha module of daves, Reason and FM7 and maybe some other bits and pieces i forget. Some of the tracks came directly from my laptop running Cubase SX mainly and were then worked on in logic and Vision in the studio. Boxoctosis still has a lot of my recordings underneath mixed with stuff in the studio. Oh and an 808 as well for doubling the bass drum and some hihat patterns.
Oh and everything in the studio went through Neve desks in recording and mixing. And i always record at 48khz 32bit.
Enough geeky stuff?
As for Zen F i have no idea. Elena just gave me them one day. never really spoke to her about it beyond saying i liked it. I also heard some tracks mark played one day that were very odd but cool dub sorta things by them. Berlin is a very cool place to visit though. And Uta is very pretty
Wretched Timesheeter - July 3, 2003 06:54 PM (GMT)
Cool. My equipment is... a drum machine or an omnichord linked up to a bass effects pedal. I can still get some pretty evil sounds out of it, though. Just not any actual songs.
sdOK - July 3, 2003 07:39 PM (GMT)
Oh i forgot Mountain Energei keys are all by the multi talented Dave. He's not just a drummer. And he sings that bit in contraflow.
Doctor Horse Strikeforce - July 4, 2003 08:46 AM (GMT)
I've looked around for Zen Faschisten CD's/LP's, they're all really hard to get unless you're willing to order from obscure online record stores. I guess it's off to Berlin.
fallfandave - July 7, 2003 10:59 PM (GMT)
i hope she stays for 20 years...otherwise this is kinda predictable

No problem!Just give me the tape, or whatever, and I can translate it for you -_-
fallfandave - July 8, 2003 01:33 PM (GMT)
it dont sound like greek or german to me....sounds more like cheeky girl english
amazinggiantleech - July 9, 2003 11:20 AM (GMT)
I object! Can't see how Gothic Queen (aka Elanor Poulou) would tone in with The Fall (though I'm obliged to admit she's very nice etc). I have only two things to suggest : a) She should attempt to join Christian Death and b ) Mark should ask Kahimi Karie (K.K.'s European fans rave : We love your miaow - miaows  ) to join, instead. I can't imagine a better combination than a bored middle - aged (sorry Mark) playing with such a vivid heavenly creature (and voice) :applaud:
Dktr Hohnholz-G - July 10, 2003 01:18 AM (GMT)
More Elanor Poulou :applaud:
More spastic keyboards :applaud:

StereoTotal: they're fooking great!Their lives however are pretty minimal, and that German quitarist reminds me too much of Les Rita Mitsouko male freak. Francoise Cactus has wrote "Clip clap" for Kahimi Karie  , boy, she has a terrific voice that girl (F. Cactus), look for My melody, track#9: Sous la douch :applaud: (sexy lyrics, girl)
