Title: Have You Ever Made A Record?
Description: Or CD (proper mind- not CDr or cassette)
Bagrec - November 5, 2004 01:57 PM (GMT)
Particularly keen to know if they're still in the shops!
gappy tooth - November 5, 2004 02:00 PM (GMT)
I'm featured on an LP that came out 2 weeks ago...but you can almost certainly not get it outside Oxon.
Lots of people here have made proper records, I seem to recall...
Erkton - November 5, 2004 02:06 PM (GMT)
I, with a friend, had our own record label & released a couple of 7" singles a few years back... one on coloured wax, even.
Harry Lime - November 5, 2004 02:06 PM (GMT)
One single in 1983 for The Applicators on DTA records, "You are the One". Sold 500, spent the money on beer. We used to give kids cigarettes to go in the record shops and ask for the record, then we used to go in and sell them some and then bugger off!
the_shrander - November 5, 2004 02:08 PM (GMT)
Just finished making one. Not in the shops yet.
Harry Lime - November 5, 2004 02:09 PM (GMT)
Mrs Lime appeared on a walsall compilation album in about 1987 as a member of Bo Peep and the Exploding Sheep, also appeared on an album her school made where she played the oboe. We used to use the oboe to frighten the cat but she's deaf now so we're fucked.
Benny's Cobweb Eyes - November 5, 2004 03:09 PM (GMT)
Yes. Quite a few. Can't afford to retire yet though. May try to flog copies of our live DVD on here!!
Martin - November 5, 2004 03:11 PM (GMT)
Where's the option for No...and I'll tell you about it...If I make a record you'd want to lock yourself away in a darkened room for many a day.
chrisgoodhead - November 5, 2004 03:54 PM (GMT)
I recorded an "album"s worth of solo material onto a multitracker using a bass guitar, saucepans, spoons, a tambourine, a few guest appearances from whoever might happen to be in the house, a bit of acoustic guitar, my dad singing, a distorted microphone that I could sort of manipulate the sound, a very basic drum machine and excerpts from various records.
I did this about 5 years ago. It is quite strange. I was suffering quite badly from depression at the time. Only one song has singing on. I sound like I am half dead. It is not really a cheerful "album". I called it Black Ball.

This sounds absolutely fantastic!
snarfyguy - November 5, 2004 05:29 PM (GMT)
My band's put out several. They're mostly out of print on defunct labels, but one or two are still available on line.
I had to buy our first one in a store one time because I didn't have any copies. 99 cents, used! Grr!
rostasi - November 6, 2004 06:20 AM (GMT)
It seems everything BUT LP, but, I suppose that the Resonance FM LP "Flatpack Antenna" may just count as one (never could figure out why they picked LP instead of CD - they could've raised more money!)
askettbucks - November 6, 2004 11:24 AM (GMT)
quite a number - but i'm too bashful to tell you about them.
QTarquin - November 9, 2004 03:09 PM (GMT)
A couple of tracks on comps, 2 CD singles and an album..............all OOP.
Cleanville Tziabatz - November 9, 2004 03:54 PM (GMT)
Assuming vanity type, small production runs of CD's (not Cd'Rs) and vinyl don't count, then none.

Why - are they shit? Or did they sell a million? (Which doesn't stop from from beign shit, I'm afraid) Or were they critically acclaimed but sadly unbought?
R. Totale - November 10, 2004 02:03 PM (GMT)
Four main ones - Mother Yod on Prescription records (Drug 1).. neo-Kraut recorded in my bedroom 8 years ago.. it was me and Lee out of Groop
Chemical - this is basically Lee's album, but there's a Syd's Floydy extended jam on one track on which I play keyboards which still sounds good to me..
Disco Sister - "Bring It" - this Blondie-sampling techno beast I did with my mate Dan got a rave review in DJ magazine, then Flying - the distribution company - collapsed before it was properly distributed.. there you go..
Neurosonics - "Kawa".. a purpose-built ambient album for hippy and New age shops, made with my mate Marc. Half of it still sounds great, and half slightly embarrassing.
You can hear my stuff on an assortment of TV shows too..

Amazing coincidence: I was on Prescription too (as part of Attack Wave Pestrepeller)... Drug 4: 'Nug Yar'. Anyone on the message board responsible for Drugs 2 or 3?
What TV shows can we hear you on, R?

Cool! I'd like to hear it.. is it out there somewhere still? And have you heard from Gary recently?
Shows I've done the music for include "Nebulous" - the new Mark Gatiss vehicle airing on R4 early next year, "Stereonation" - an R4 comedy series, "Fancy Me Island", "Tenplay" (a games chart show), Evolver (a factual documentary series about future entertainment) and I did the soundtrack to my "Avalon; A Field in Glastonbury" documentary.
Gaz - November 25, 2004 04:23 PM (GMT)
Me and my mate cut a track in his brothers home recording studio (He's in one of them.."christian bands")
We called it...Ohhh the shame!..."forever lonely".
It was for a high school music project, i whacked a few bongos, he played piano and i wrote the lyrics...
because of recording facilites and time, we never cut the vocal though.
Still, we came first in the class...or he did anyway, i had the day off
I still write (thankfully better) lyrics though, but i cant play an instrument for shit.

Better than having 800 of the fuckers still in your basement like me.
Toubleoverbridgewater - December 19, 2004 04:25 AM (GMT)
Appeared on a vinyl album compilation in Dublin back in the late eighties. The cover was designed by a guy call Steve Averill who went on to design a lot of U2 stuff. I found a second hand copy in a record shop a few years ago.

The last (and final) band I was in released a 7" EP about ten years ago. '94, I believe, although my recollection of those days is "fuzzy," to say the least. Anyhow, a horrid experience, doomed from the start. Financed it ourselves, pressed a thousand if I recall. Sold considerably less than that, of course... Another regret I have about this is how immediately obsolete the 45 became: We were a prolific lot, and released the record early on in our time together. Barely a month or two later, and our newer material was a significant improvement over our recently released "product." The EP was (and will forever be) hardly representative of the band we actually were... No matter. As it was, we came to a bitter end anyway, as it happens with quite a few young bands, and ended up giving away much of our unsold vinyl to anyone who gave a damn. Still, they made lovely coasters, and also proved to be quite aerodynamic, in or out of the sleeves! ;)

I wanna plug Cleanville's efforts as he's being so humble.
I have had the good fortune to hear some releases by Farces Wanna Mo and they are more than charming. They are a blast! Really good stuff my man! Would be huge fun live I'm thinking.

Time to update this, I feel.
There must have been a few more releases from newer FF members in the intervening 3 and half years...

Well there's Daren for a start.
Sadly (for you all) my efforts only made cassette stage, but if I win the lottery I will build a recording studio so look out ; )

Quite a few over the years.
Was in a band in the early 90’s where we thought it would be a good idea to cross Slayer with The Pet Shop Boys and House music – strangely a record company thought is was a good idea too so we did an album and a single for them plus a remixed 12” thing that DJs of the time seemed to like. We also did a ‘proper’ video directed by the chap (Walter Stern) who did the Firestarter one amongst others, which did get an airing on MTV once though it was shockingly bad.
The album to be honest was quite poor but it did okay hanging around in indie metal charts for quite a while and the single got to 136 in the proper charts December ’91. The best part of all of it though was working in studios like Loco, Eden and Orinoco and also meeting John Lydon and John McGeoch whilst recoding at Great Linford Manor – though I was too star struck to actually go the pub with them when they asked. And doing a gig with Murder Inc which was basically Killing Joke without Jaz and with Martin Atkins on drums – Geordie very kindly moved his amps to allow me to set up my stuff; again cue lots of star struck mumbles of ‘thank you’
A footnote to this is that for some bizarre reason, the who ever makes Drop Dead Gorgeous for the BBC decided to put one our 15 year old songs in the programme and I got royalty payment for £8.57 about 2 months ago.
Through the years since that I have put a out 12” single that did pretty well in the clubs that Anne Nightingale liked and played (though she preferred it at 33 rather than the 45 it was cut at) I remixed Free Huey for the Boo Radleys which came out on a limited edition 10” and remains my highest chart entry at 46.
These days I have been playing bass/laptop in band called Sancho our second album was out on Seed last year, we have recorded the new one and are starting to do gigs soonish with the new songs and a slightly different line up, hope to be playing at Cargo –London in the near future, and round the country later in the year.
Also I put out noise stuff on a label called Dirty Demos did a split cd for them last year with Posset and am trying to do a full length album for them a the moment but I’m not terribly prolific so I’m miles behind on it.
You can still get my CD from Dirty Demos and Mystery Year by Sancho is still out there somewhere. The album from early 90’s is still available I believe as I think they are still trying to recoup the silly amount of money they spent on us.
Sorry for the rambling post
the_shrander - February 15, 2008 11:47 AM (GMT)
I've got a new one on the way.
Aubrey The Cat - February 15, 2008 02:11 PM (GMT)
Horrible Nurds.
We did one 7" single in 1980 that wasn't that good. Fun, though.
I knew we'd reached some sort of mile stone when I saw a copy in a 2nd hand shop a couple of months after the release.
I still have 4 boxes of 25 piled up outside the room i'm sitting in.
Dice Man - February 15, 2008 02:40 PM (GMT)
Used to play drums. Many years later I can tell the music world must be quite happy that there are no recordings officially available.
Kapitän - February 15, 2008 05:04 PM (GMT)
Yes. Sort of...
I was the singer in a band for in my last two years as a student (at a college located in a very small town). There used to be student band nights, and we won it both times we played.
The guitarist/songwriter had some cheap studio equipment, so we recorded all the songs we had and pressed 500 copies. We had a release concert, album included on the ticket. Went reasonably well, we got a full house (which was only 300 people, but still...). A couple of songs also appeared on a couple of underground compilations. The rest of the copies were sold to friends back home. It was never in the stores.
The band split when we finished school and the members got spread around the country. We weren't very good to be honest - at least not my taste. Too much "rawk" cliches - and it was never more than a pasttime for me, I didn't have any heart for the music we made. Very embarassing listen now - allthough the pretty poor recording didn't do it any favours.
Thing was - the main songwriter had a kid brother who also played in the band, and who wrote much, much better songs. But it was the elder brother's project basically, so the kid didn't get a look in. Shame, as he had some gems up his sleeve.

Lots, as (chronologically) Kilgore Trout (though there have been a number of bands of this name, as you might imagine), AC Temple, Spoonfed Hybrid, Bear, Coping Saw, Lazer Boy and currently Smokers Die Younger. Links to myspaces below, but a Grand Unified Site is currently under construction to bring material by all of these together and make a load of previously unavailable stuff available as free downloads.

I've not been featured on an actual pressing but I've done a lot of CDRs with people and various recordings with bands in various houses.
In the next few years I plan on putting out some vinyl if possible.
Neal Cassady - February 17, 2008 10:19 PM (GMT)
I notice three legged black grey dog was in AC Temple - if thats "the" AC Temple well done that man - a very good band.
Here's the blurb from the band i was in:
A stunning collection of 23 tracks from one of the finest UK melodic punk bands of their era finally available for the very first time on CD! Takes tracks from their “Impact Time” demo in 1988, through to the debut Pusmort 7”, through tracks from their one and only album “Days Of Wild Skies” , through to tracks from their final couple of split 7” singles – also contains their one and only John Peel Session from 1991, as well as tracks from the unreleased split album with Sofahead. Compiled by the band with extensive sleeve notes, this is a must have release for fans of late 80s UK melodic punk , a band that never truly got the recognition and admiration they deserved , apart from through their peers.
There's a best of on ebay now for some lucky person.... the bands name is Exit Condition.
