Title: Best band with two drummers?
Zedkah - July 27, 2003 05:46 PM (GMT)
"Two stick hitting blokes hanging about with musicians? What good can come of it? They will only muck about and simulate buggery on the videos but then again Tempo House....." Discuss with reference to polyrhythmic theories and feel free to include a diagram if necessary.

Any chance of adding King Crimson?
Zedkah - July 27, 2003 08:07 PM (GMT)
I would add King Crimson but it wont let me ( or I am too computer thick to work it out). The subheading will have to remain poinless too.
Any others I should have added? Perhaps Zappa had a two drum Mothers but perhaps that was an extra percussionist. Drummer plus extra percussionist doesnt count.

lick my decals off, baby
& second half of Neu 75 (particulary good duo drumming on "after eight")
Wretched Timesheeter - July 28, 2003 12:22 PM (GMT)
The Timelords - "Doctor Who-oo - Hey! - Doctor Who!" . But that's a Gary Glitter sample anyway.
I think my proper serious choice is The Fall. Hex Enduction Hour has the most convincing and powerful double-drumkit sound.

and some "hippy bullshit"..
Faust & Amon Duul 11

I'd like to have seen a 2 drummer Fall gig, they seemed to have quit this set-up by the time I first saw them in '96

When in the name of Zardoz did the Krimson have a 2 drummer line-up? I can recall when they had a '2 rubbish' line-up (ho ho!), but not 2 drummers, shurely?
richard - August 19, 2003 10:09 AM (GMT)
Glitter Band for mine - 2 drummer Fall MOST over-rated - 'desperate attempt to make bouncy good' = And This Day = the interminable!
Sacha_C - August 23, 2003 02:43 PM (GMT)
I'd probably say mid-80's vintage-period Butthole Surfers...or if going into the realms of jazz, the monstrous John Coltrane line-up with twin drum titans Elvin Jones and Rashied Ali, as featured on his "Meditations" LP.
Cadishead Acidheads - August 24, 2003 11:08 AM (GMT)
The Grenadier Guards have about 20 drummers. Fantastic.

Probaly got a few drummers less by now, thanks to Blair Bush

So? I voted for the Ants...
Spazzy Bystander - September 7, 2005 12:12 AM (GMT)
Any chance of adding The Beta Band?
Sorry, I won't vote for anyone else...

Anyone familiar with the Archipelago Brewing Co.?
They advertised on their "Criswell" 7-inch that they had "five god-damned girl drummers."
I once saw a Caroliner show in a high school auditorium where they rigged two drumkits upside-down hanging by wires from the ceiling. The kits were hanging about seven feet off the ground, and two women on mini-trampolines were jumping up and down to hit the drums. For the entire duration of the performance, the band played along to the irregular oblong rhythms that resulted from this approach.

Later incarnations of the Boredoms (or more correctly Vooredoms these days) are multi-drummer enabled, and they're bloody ace. Check out Vision Creation Newsun, or any live stuff stuff from recent years if'n you don't believe me.
I saw the Wedding Present when they were doing their double drummer thing and that was kinda cool, but I couldn't stop thinking of Hanley and Burns...

No 'Awkwind?
No Genesis with double drummer action?
krischicago - September 7, 2005 08:36 AM (GMT)
A band with two drummers is like an ascot tie, hardly anyone can pull it off without looking like a complete fucking goober.
Except for the central shaft, The Fall.
Middle Class Rebel - September 7, 2005 11:44 AM (GMT)
whats the general opinion on the steel drum?

"Yes, that's very good but it's not quite what we're looking for"
(PETER COOK - The Critics - Derek And Clive - Ad Nauseum)

Another long forgotten two-drummer-line-up-hippy-band.
Not quite as good as The Glitter Band though.
squarehead - December 19, 2011 02:54 PM (GMT)
The Hanley-Burns Fall beat all those 'art' double-drummer bands.
hey, The Melvins have been a terrific double-drummer combo for about 5yrs now.
799thJim - December 19, 2011 03:30 PM (GMT)
The Fall, oddly enough :D
anyone starting a poll for best band with no/3/4/etc drummers? :)
Fritter - December 20, 2011 05:34 PM (GMT)
Ahem...

Kraftwerk falls under "Krautrock hippy shit" category on accounta their long-haired days.
ryaneno - December 20, 2011 11:58 PM (GMT)
Always wondered why Kraftwerk needed TWO drummers, made sense on Radioactivity, but...
rainmaster - December 21, 2011 12:03 AM (GMT)
No one here likes Kraftwerk anymore - it's all Organization now. -_-
Three drummers, I believe. :)
