Title: Neighbourhood Of Infinity
Description: 7 reasons why I love this song
splart_plantation - July 22, 2003 06:12 AM (GMT)
1. Craig's ferocious "non riff" at the start
2. Feedback
3. The way Doc Shanley takes over the riff & Craig just "rattles"
4. Off-beat 1 finger keyboard riff
5. "Haitch"
6. The noise after "Mr Alistair takes up the tragedy"
7. The way the guitar goes manic in the "We are The Fall" bit
One of my fave songs on my fave Fall album. PBL just seems so much "darker" than any other. The combination of this track plus "Garden" is, in my humble opinion, the best 2 song combination on any Fall album (discuss).
:applaud:

Y do ppl put discuss after they have finished sayin sth?
is it an order? or some kind of instructions for use like [caution your hot drink is hot] ....

Sort of agree too, as mr scratchyloads says its up there. Really peerless stuff. This period was absolutely brilliant live too. I remember brix sitting down on the stage for the tracks she wasnt needed on, before she was fully intergrated. Mark must have been proud of the lyrics to Garden as they are on the inner sleeve. I think only Prole Art Threat had had its lyrics put on the sleeve before that. Im sure one of the fact type bods can correct me if I wrong. Shame it wasnt Neighbourhood.... though as I used to go around singing "I used to have this thing about lingerie, I used to play around on saturday..."
Not quite "the devil has a sideboard" but rather good anyway.

The version on Palace Of Swords is better though. Marky's always at his peak when he mentions insects (see Bug Day, Cyber Insekt, et al) and he mentions 'the time of giant moths' on that version. Although having said that, moths aren't strictly speaking insects

Just noticed this bit... I'd have to say English Scheme / New Face In Hell. B)

Wot about Hip Priest/Fortress/Dear Park (does that count as two or three)? Or Slates, Slags, etc/Leave The Capitol?

What is haitch?
Great song, though.
BikeBloke - September 7, 2004 03:36 PM (GMT)
how about 'Smile -> I Feel Voxish -> Tempo House' from the same elpee??
'Put your claim into Tempo House
Go there and have a grouse'. Classic stuff.

the ignoramus mispronunciation of the letter 'aitch' (H)?

Yeah, but what's it got to do with the song? Hanley?

Isn't MES reading off a list with each point prefixed by a letter of the alphabet?

MES also says "haitch" in the "GOHOHO9O" bit of "Eat Y'self Fitter".

NOI was approximately 8 years ahead of its time, since the aural effect the band were aiming for could only really be done with lots of fancy samplers and gadgetry that didn't exist/was too expensive in 1983. Note all the muti-layered vocals. CF: Spector Vs. Rector.
I've long thought that some of the early Fall stuff was really struggling to achieve the sound they actually did on Levitate/Marshall, but was held back by simple technological problems.
JonN - September 8, 2004 10:21 AM (GMT)
The NOI lyrics are the most obvious use by MES of the Burroughsian "cut-up" method, as is mentioned in the lyrics themselves.

Great song esp. the live version on 'Palace..' Seems to me that the current line-up could do a pretty good run through of this. Mr Trafford seems to have the bass for it :applaud:

What do you recommend by Link Wray?

Gorillabat be fielding this one.
Link Wray is a very big fave with me.
Two fairly recent double CD reissues:
"Slinky!" which compiles nearly all of his Epic label recordings-- all his first singles and sessions. (1958-1961 or so)
also highly recommended is "Mr. Guitar"-- another double disc. These tracks are from the slightly later Swan label recordings (1961-1964 or so) and there is some overlap as they re-recorded versions of some of their Epic singles, etc. But don't let that put you off. The Swan stuff is really great-- raw and rocking.
If two discs seems a little much, there is a good single disc collection called "Rumble" that is a great place to start.
Enjoyeeee!
squarehead - September 10, 2004 09:51 PM (GMT)
yes, for sure a great track!
Can anyone recommend another live version of NOI (besides the Palace version)?

i agree with this. side 2 of PBL is the Fall's apogee.
and what a great thread. Neighbourhood is one of my favourite tracks. greatwhen the keyboard riff comes in near the end, just before the clattery drum pay-off and then "we are the fall" and in-studio muttering.
the point of the lyrics is apparent from PbL sleeve. A list of facts known by the man whose head expanded, referring to the single which came out about same time as PbL. hence at the start "The man whose head... (A) knew about .. etc
i prefer the version on PbL to the live one on Palace. it has that great, crisp sound and tightness. the live one kind of outstays its welcome a little at the end
it's one of those tracks i can put on when i could do with listening to something but can't actually think of anything i like. others in that category are "albatross" by PiL, "i can't stand it" by vu, "louie louie" by kingsmen, "holidays" by sex pistols
Martin - September 11, 2004 11:21 AM (GMT)
I like this...but on Perverted there are at least 3 or 4 better songs...

Persons belonging to the late great STEPS group always affectionately referred to their fellow band member as "Haitch".

If you want to hear him check out last nights peel show Tue 14th on the listen again thingy.
The first record on the show is the Batman theme by Link Wray.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/alt/johnpeel/ Just realised why he played that track :)
R. Totale - September 15, 2004 01:46 PM (GMT)
Love Neighbourhood.. but Tempo House and Garden add nothing to the band's canon (although Garden does have great lyrics)
The Encrusted Green - September 15, 2004 09:55 PM (GMT)
says profound things about the subjectivity of music appreciation that well-versed fall-loving folks can dismiss two tracks which i would always put in any fall top ten (tempo house and garden).
not sure if it highlights the futility, or the whole point, of debate on the merit of art

I used to listen to Neighbourhood of Infinity/Garden obsessively, as well.
NOI makes a good track to salsa to!

"Last Commands of Xyralothep" seems like a re-working of "Neighbourhood", content-wise and noise-wise. I like it.
