Short set as expected...

Set list roughly:
2 x new songs
Cowboy George
Duped
Bury
White Lightening
Psychik Dancehall
New song

Mark did lots of live mixing to good effect.

Roll on Edinburgh for a full set...

pclimie - September 11, 2011 10:20 PM (GMT)

trickleondaftdan - September 11, 2011 10:33 PM (GMT)
Mask............

Another new one...........woohoo.........surely you spoil us Mr Mark.

:)

djbawbag - September 11, 2011 10:53 PM (GMT)
"Good afternoon, we are The Fall."

Eleni jumping for joy when Mark told the band to do Psychic Dancehall !

Band on a bit after 5.30, off a bit before 6.15.

Setlist:

New one (Mask? )
Hot Cake
Laptop
Cowboy George
Bury
Greenway
I've Been Duped
White Lightning
Psykick Dancehall
Monocard

Monocard was the standout of the new stuff, musically somewhere between Chino and Weather Report. And towards the end the live mixing actually sounded like "mixing" as opposed to fannying about.

^^^ Thanks Djbawbag and Pclimie ^^^

Mask Search = The song formerly known as "Scaramanga"

Little Frank - September 12, 2011 01:46 PM (GMT)
Thank you Mr Bawbag. Sounds like a good set. Christ, them girls talking over Greenway are annoying. Why bother even going if you're going to do that.

pomfob - September 12, 2011 05:38 PM (GMT)
Monocard is the new Blindness ~ Reformation bulldozer tune, bloody marvellous. I'd like them to have played longer (and later - why the fuck were Wild Beasts on after them?), but the discipline on the festival compels MES not to muck about as much. And I guess he likes not having to play for so long anyway.

Very impressed by my learned friend above texting me for a review exactly one minute after they left the stage. I shall repeat my words of wisdom for the rest of you;

Grungey. Vicious. Monocard!

Sums it up nicely, I think.

Not really...my review was more a general Electric Frog review rather than the Fall, so I was highlighting Mark's usual antics...but I would say Pete looked fairly resigned to his fate of having guitar turned right off a few times.

OK, so the usual stuff then. I'm growing fond of Pete, really like what he's doing on the live stuff that people have posted this year...

Welcome to the board, by the way.

A thoroughly enjoyable gig. The new songs are sounding brilliant, which augurs very well for the album.

I agree that it would've been better if they were on a bit later, though. (5:30 was definitely too early).

It was also a pleasure to meet Pomfob (spotted due to his t-shirt), and a few others from here. I still haven't got my set list back, by the way!

My guess is Elini is here to stay. Second guitarist = larger group = lower wages = not going to happen.......

I sort of agree with Chippers in that an extra guitarist might enhance the current Fall Sound, but in no way should he/she take the place of Eleni, or should I say the keyboards.

If nothing else, it'd give MES more of a headache live mixing, where currently Pete seems to be bearing the brunt. :D

Being two, they could play monkey in the middle with him.

About time someone said this , I've never been a big fan of Marks onstage so called " live mixing ", never felt it brings anything to the Fall Sound.

Ok it's all part of Marks onstage act or performance , bit of the old showbizz razzmatazz, but I'm bored to tears with it and feel it takes a lot away.

Change the record.

aye,

when did he start doing the old 'live mixing', in the nineties?

My head is a Fall slush when it comes to remembering things.

I probably could'nt tell you what was on the last album without checking , but I'm guessing around the early noughties.

Someone will now probably pull out something from the eighties.

;)

I never saw it as a performance so much as a simple way to change the emphasis on the rest of the band.
ie. take someone who's a bit flash like Ben Pritchard - dunno if he was flash onstage (before my time) but he comes across on that BBC doc as a bit flash - even if he isn't doesn't matter as I don't know what I'm talking about anyway - let's say a band member is conscious of the audience and playing to them: MES turns their amp down so they can't be heard. If they take their eye off the ball and start playing crap and MES turns the amp back up they sound cack, so it forces them or should do to keep focused even though the audience can't hear them. It takes the emphasis off the audience and on to playing as best as they can for its own sake.

monkey_rat - September 14, 2011 11:28 AM (GMT)
when he turns an amp right down it tends to deflate any energy a song has. i dont buy this idea about it improving playing or increasing tension (in a positive way) onstage.

it sounds poo and someone should tell him.

But when he turns Pete's guitar down to build the tension and then bring it right up all of a sudden it sounds fantastic!!

I think it's 70 - 30% in favour of amp twiddling (no science to that, just a general perception). Turning Pete's amp up is usually a good thing. Turning it down is at times necessary (often following a previous hike in the volume). Chucking a mic into the bass drum is usually a bad thing.

He never messes with E's keyboard amplification, does he? Knows which side his bread's buttered.
