Title: Cruisers Creek
Description: My vinyl collection is growing!
REX - September 4, 2004 12:17 AM (GMT)
So after last week's accomplishment buying the powder blue Real New Fall LP and a stray near mint copy of the Domesday Payoff Triad Plus, yesterday I acquired the 12" single of Cruisers Creek.
You can tell I went shopping yesterday, can't you...?
As you know, I'm not a vinyl buff, my collection is mostly records left over from my new wave pop days as a teenager in the 80s and a number of limited edition 12" singles or weird goth/industrial stuff that means little beyond nostalgia to me now. But I decided to buy the Creek 12" because a] someone mentioned the version of the song was longer? and b] the recent vinyl vs. CD debate somewhat reached a consensus that the 12" single is the perfect format.
The record does sound great. But instead of emphasizing the wonder of vinyl to me, it emphasized the crap that passes for a quality CD master on the old Beggars discs. We need Beggars remasters! Please please please! Disc 1 with original album and Disc 2 with singles and B-sides. Please please please!!! ;)

I second this.
I got a copy of the Cruisers Creek 7" a while back and it sounds appalling. Until I track down a 12" or BB do some decent CDs or reissue the VHS8489 tape on DVD this is my only copy of the full length version.

So last weekend I acquired a couple more items for my new and growing vinyl collection... a near-mint copy of A Part of America Therein that sounds much better than the crappy mastering done on the Slates CD, and a copy of the US version of Frenz Experiment.
As with the other Beggars vinyl, this sounds *way* better than the current CDs. I did notice no mention of this on the discography however -- the cover features yellow lettering (instead of red) and the tracklisting includes "Hit the North" as the opener on Side 2, before "In These Times." No tracks have been removed, making this an 11-track record.
And you guys weren't kidding. This version of "Bremen Nacht" is unbelievable -- rockier, and less repetitive. I can't help but wonder why it was traded for the "Alternative" version.

This reminds me there is a record fair in Norwich next Saturday :applaud:
Looks like the wallets going to be having another battering curtesy of The Fall and a few others ^_^

Thanks for proving that my instincts to NOT buy the A Part..../Slates were a good one, I know not everyone has a turntable anymore, but I was never one to rush out and buy a CD just cause it was there, when the vinyl version was more than able to fill the bill. Same thing goes for the US Frenz as well.

There must be something in the air - I've just been in correspondence with Conway re US CD of Frenz to update discography - reckon the only way to get the 7 min version of Bremen Nacht on CD.
Also finally got a copy of Domesday Pay-off Triad LP at the weekend to fill a fairly pointless gap in the collection (built since 1980!)
My first post btw so hello - this site rocks I believe!! :)

Well, if you want them on CD, wait for the new expanded Sanctuary versions which should be great. Slates is coming out soon.
Welcome, BigBopper. You're in the states? Do you find the Fall vinyl hard to come by nowadays?

No from Liverpool.
I bought everything on vinyl till Kurious Oranj and DPT was just something not worth buying at the as it is basically a compilation over here.
(Un!!)fortunately my fall-obsession has recently been re-ignited and so I've been filling in the odd gap.
79th gig coming in a fortnight too - hurrah!
PS Liverpools a big place... I won't be found!!
PPS although maybe a disguise could be in order

That's okay.. Davey B. wouldn't know a serial killer if one were to gut him, starting right below the rib cage.

I apologise Rex. As you are clearly not a serial killer I will tell you that I live alone in a downstairs flat and my address is:
<Address removed at the request of the family of the deceased>
I'm sorry I ever doubted you.
Davey :)

Howdy, neighbour! Not sure that's such a good move, though ... Rex may not be a serial killer, but research has shown conclusively that everyone else on the Web is, apart from me, being a vegetarian.

Vegetarians can still be serial killers so long as they don't eat the body afterwards! :(
Even Otherdave could be out to get me.

Great. Now you're setting me up to frame me.
Hey, everybody... if anything happens to Davey B. in the next few days, it wasn't ME, okay?

On a serious note.. the Cruiser's Creek 12" is one of the finest Fall artefacts I own. Always reminds me of that amazing performance they did on the Tube of that and Bombast. Best live music on telly I've ever seen.

Be sure to write my name on the ground in gasoline before you light it. It will be my "signature."

I can't see the point of being a serial killer unless you eat them afterwards... seems a straightforward energy expenditure/intake balance issue... I suppose I could raid your fridge on a post-slaughter search for vegetables and quiche, but I'm not sure the calories would justify the effort unless I knew you'd just been shopping.

Interesting -- the German vinyl of 'Frenz' issued by SPV is just the same: yellow (well, actually golden) lettering and 'Hit the North Part 1' as the first song on side 2.
Agree on 'Bremen Nacht', it's much better than the 'Alternative' on CD. That song alone made me regret 100 times that I gave away my 'Frenz' vinyl when I bought the CD -- without making at least a copy on tape first. I wonder if it's ever re-released in its original form, or at least with the original 'Nacht' as a bonus track.
Also agree on what's been said about 'Frighten-ing World' and 'Nation's Saving Grace' -- the original song sequence of the vinyl abums ought to be restored on the CD and the singles and extra tracks really either tagged onto the end or on a separate disk. In the current CD version, both albums are simply too long, and the genius of the albums is obscured by some of the weaker B-sides.
