Title: TNSG Omnibus
Description: Best REMASTER
rainmaster - February 2, 2011 10:03 AM (GMT)
As the other poll, which song is improved the most by remastering? Not your favourite song, the most improved in sound.
I'm going with Gut Of The Quantifier - previously not a favourite, but this version is stunning!
Vixen deserves praise too - not many like it, but it sounds 100% better remastered than before.
flickeringlexicon - February 2, 2011 04:35 PM (GMT)
Although I hate to say it: none of the above. :(

:(
B-but it's a MASSIVE improvement on original ceedee!
:devil2:
flickeringlexicon - February 2, 2011 04:43 PM (GMT)
That's why I hated to say it, because I knew I'd be in a minority of one... but, heaven help me, I like drums. When things are remastered/re-mixed, decisions have to be made, I realize that. I just don't agree with any of the decisions made here.
Anyway, I'll shut up, because I want to hear what people like about it :) I'm not trying to be a sore-head or a sour-puss, but I aint gonna lie...

No reason why you should. I'm listening to Barmy now. I can't hear anything wrong with the drums.

Ah... :( Have to wonder: were they like that on elpee? So long since I've listened to the vinyl.

No, the vinyl is what I'm most used to: it was the first Fall album I got, and I've definitely listened to it more than any other Fall album. The original BB CD is closer to the vinyl in terms of 'balance,' but it's murky and muddy sounding. The omnibus definitely removes that mud, but all this rebalancing has disappointed this listener... no one wanted to like this more than I, believe me.

Well I'm glad I started this poll, for it to be thrown back in my face!
Seriously though, flex, I'm sorry you don't like it. I find the drums absolutely fine, with the bonus of guitars and bass you can actually hear.
Try 'Gut Of The Quantifier' again - and 'Vixen' -that's much improved, imo. :)

It has already been mentioned on the review thread that the remastered songs from the first side of the original LP sound a bit a bit different to the second, i.e. louder. Doesn't really bother me, nevertheless I picked a song from the second half: My New House.
Also my favourite track on Disc 2 (Mark's Mix), but that might be a different poll's subject...
Exopsychicton - February 3, 2011 09:52 AM (GMT)
Paintwork and My New House got nice lifts from this- Some subtle creative nonsense brought to the fore.
Bombast was not as livened as I would have liked, but no matter. It remains a favorite, improved.
Pleased enough, worth the fork out, enough said.

Cruisers Creek. Amazing that it could be improved. :) Or perhaps LA

Reservations, prefer the BEGA LP etc, but I agree.
Gut of the Q sounds best on new one to me.

According to Amazon my box is turning up this morning, but I'm distressed to hear this. The best thing about BB's remaster of Love by The Cult is the drums; they sound incredible. Just listening to it has been increasing my anticipation for TNSG.
I guess I shall now come to it with reduced expectations, which can only be a good thing.

Welll... hardly anyone has agreed with me, so you might just be shaking your head ruefully at how off-base I am when you hear it. Now that I've gone back and listened to the (murked-out) original BB CD, it's time to re-visit the Omnibus...
worthless recluse - February 16, 2011 01:11 AM (GMT)
I picked Bombast, as it's a song I never liked - it always sounded incoherent to me but on the reissue you can hear the dynamics. I don't get how anyone could think that the omnibus is anything but FAR superior to the earlier cd.

It's well worth the money, DP.
Surely you want to hear Ma Riley, Edie, the full length Cruisers Creek, and all unheard rough mixes? :)

And, honestly, the sound quality is much much better throughout - you won't be disappointed.
Actually, flex WAS disappointed....

i've had it bookmarked since release but have not acted - same with the other omnibus which BK specifically stated did not fit properly on his shelf :o

Yes, the two are different sizes - the one with three discs is fatter than the one with four.
If you ain't got TWAFWOTF yet, I'd hurry.
duckpin236 - February 17, 2011 04:56 PM (GMT)
I just bought two Bill Doak model Rawlings baseball gloves from the late 1930s and WW2 so I'll have to wait a bit
If I get one, I'll get both

Upon first listen ( to the first disc ), I wasn't too impressed- but on my second listen ( to the first disc again ), I can really notice the improvement- it's like cleaning the grime off the Sistine Chapel- all sorts of new hues and textures emerge. Makes it enjoyable to listen to lines like " half-wit philanthropist- filthy charity gig " again. i'm looking forward to hearing the other discs.
mirwais57 - February 19, 2011 08:10 AM (GMT)
I'll say Couldn't Get Ahead because it's never really grabbed me before, but it's really stood out each time I listen to this set.
Chris a100 - February 25, 2011 03:45 PM (GMT)
Though I don't consider it part of TNSG, I voted for Petty (Thief) Lout.
The quiet/loud transitions really benefit from the remaster -- there is more clarity at both extremes. Love it.
