Title: Favourite video on "Perverted By Language" DVD?
Description: Most pointless poll ever!

Sacha_C - July 17, 2003 12:19 PM (GMT)
As everyone commented about the "PBL/Live At Leeds" DVD on this forum earlier (about the quality and so forth), I was curious to see what everyone's fave moment on the "PBL" part of the DVD is. I deliberately didn't put down "Live At Leeds", as I think the whole gig stands by itself (and it's such a great performance, it's hard to choose a "best" moment). And for those who haven't bought this yet, then do so - the quality isn't fantastic, but it's a worthwhile investment.

mantpl - July 17, 2003 12:53 PM (GMT)
Wings is my favourite off PBL. It's the perfect setting for a Fall video i.e. ordinary, non glamourous pub and then there's Brix looking fairly glam and cracking up laughing during the video. It's just ...GREAT!!!. But only second best to 'Cruiser's Creek' (I think), which is my fav. Fall video. The VHS version of PBL is far superior to the DVD version and I find it amazing that reviewers & fans alike have been soy receptive of this shoddy second rate DVD. Let's be honest if this was a Bowie or Who release there would be outrage, but because it's The Fall it's okay to be sloppy/half arsed. I propose they re-release the video just so people can see what a great visual document it is or re-release a proper *improved* DVD version!

bhantu - July 17, 2003 01:25 PM (GMT)
I think wings also
but I think the bit with mark on the settee is my favourite part of the whole thing
ive based my whole talking style on that interview
thats sad innit!!

especially the eeerrmmm bits
where he sez errrm and looks up to the ceiling

i do that a lot !!

Repetition - July 18, 2003 06:10 AM (GMT)
I just voted for Wings too.... begging the question:

Why does it only have one vote?!

Senior - July 18, 2003 09:56 AM (GMT)
I voted for Totally Wired. I wonder what happened to the rest of the film of that gig...

amazinggiantleech - July 18, 2003 10:22 AM (GMT)
The man whose head expanded...nice shirt mark! But then I remembered kicker.. should I vote again?

fallfandave - July 18, 2003 06:05 PM (GMT)
I voted for kicker

Durruti - July 18, 2003 08:13 PM (GMT)
Blistering version of Totally Wired. Better quality than the Leeds show...

Zedkah - July 27, 2003 06:12 PM (GMT)
I'm with Mr senior here. Totally wired. Just like the B&Wness of the simple performance film. Is it originally a film and then converted to Video I wonder. It has a good quality to it. Like Hartnell era Dr Who bootleg. It sounds like the same version thats on Part of America Therin. Can anyone confirm/deny this? Every time I hear it I try to work out the track thats just ending but i dont have time because Totally Wired starts and you cant try to work out a song while another song is playing.

Did I ever mention that I have bis on betamax?

I still have not bought this item. I see two lovely PBL DVD copies at the local HMV. I don't know. Must re-finance the house to buy more Fall product. I don't even have a DVD player. Hey DKTR!

Just an idea like, why don't you play it on your computer? You might have to re-mortgage your house to purchase the many and varied Fall products though........

P.S. Maybe you can get it at your local HMV? Just a thought......

Wretched Timesheeter - September 15, 2003 10:47 PM (GMT)
The live videos don't do all that much for me, I dare say.

I think Eat Y'Self Fitter is the one with the most thrown at it, but it's just so embarassing to watch in places. Worth it for MES flicking the V's.

Kicker is my favourite. Good use of images there, and a fab punchy song to boot. Wings is a close second.

As for The Confidence Of Glaspance... that's messed up! What Leigh Bowery (it is him, right?) says makes absolutely no sense at all. That long pause at the end where he looks at the camera funnily creases me up every time. I'm smiling just thinking about it now, despite being in the worst mood ever.

Actually, my fave bit on the DVD is at the end of The Man Whose Head... where Brix incongruously yells "Get out of the house, I can see you behind the door laughing at me!".

Eat y'self fitter-missus reckons mark's dancing is hilarious-is he having a laugh or does he really dance like that, (a candidate for gayerst fall memberr there), but then there's the nice doggie style between karl and paul at the end

yeah, and brixie very masculine on hers...
anyway, i think that the top moment of the entire dvd is in 'wings':
the 2 guys sit down in a pub and she can't help laughing while on the contrary he can (and sings "alteration of the past. can turn time into space" looking snobbishingly at the ceiling).
THAT'S REAL ANTI-FICTION!

cheers

I voted for Kicker just cos it features THAT pic of the England team doing the Nazi salute, a reminder to be vigilant! I've also stood in the stands there & drank the beer advertised, so I feel a connection. (which pub features in the dvd? looks familiar, but so do all Joey Holt's ale houses & it's along time since ah were oop north)
However, Mark's dance on Eat... makes me laff every time, it's like your pissed uncle at a wedding, dancing to "it's not unusual" by Tom Jones.

chachacha - December 29, 2003 04:27 AM (GMT)
wings is pretty cool and trippy-that pull back from the picture on the wall to give the impression of flight/hovering freaked me out-v cool use of simple technology to get a great effect. And the hardly drunk pints-Cmon Mark -call yerself a professional?!

Have owned tgis vid for many years but have seen it only a few times anmd once wit hthe missus on mushrooms-Mark comeS ACROSS AS A fun guy with a lot of warmth and tenderness really which was a bit disconcerting, but shrooms will do that to yer

"people just wantta hug and get lovey dovey"

Fave video - Voted for wings, If only for the fact Ive been kicked out of the pub it was filmed in (Shit claim to fame, I know..) It's still open and going strong, fact fans.

However, If I was voting for performance I would've gone for Totally Wired or Smile.

I have now, thanks.

So (bare with me, I've just got up) I take it that the PBLB section of the DVD is a collection of the band's early 80s promos? If so, that's even more of a reason to get it. I haven't seen many of those. That was a reason why I liked the BBC3 documentary so much, all the old promo clips. You don't realise how starved us Fall fans have been of seeing our heroes on the idiot lantern, until you see all that stuff. Plus, I haven't really heard half of those early singles before (Kicker Conspiracy, Wings etc). Another reason why I can't wait for Room To Live and PBL re-issues. I will definitely be getting this and ther Live @ Hacienda DVDs, now. Pay day soon. (Maybe the delay of PBL and RTL was a good move after all)

Vvillager - May 7, 2005 11:37 AM (GMT)
Kicker Conspiracy for me. It brings back happy memories of seeing Leeds beat Burnley at Turf Moor. It was also the first time that I had seen the Fall on video. Because I live quite close to the place now, it is a good vid to play to people around here; they get quite animated when it says 'Made in Burnley' at the end.

I also think that the camera angle trick at the end of Wings is really effective. You think that you are floating up and away from the pub, but then realise that the camera is sinking back and down.

The bit in Container Drivers cracks me up where you get the drum-roll as the 'Salford Van Hire' blunders through that barrier.

wings is a brilliant piece of video. The static shots of MES mouthing the words with boredom, brix just looking around sorta befuddled, laughing. The wallpaper.

this video is a great example of very effective minimalism. I saw it in high school and a lot of art I did afterwards for a few years was somewhat inspired by that video.

The last shot is okay, kinda gimmicky.

Eat y'self fitter is great. MES dance makes it. phenominal. especially since it goes on for way too long.

kicker conspiracy is good.
container drivers is just pathetic.

all the live footage is pretty good, especially man whose head expanded. Totally Wired is quite boring, but I love that he performs it with-uh- his hand-uh in his pockit.

What a perfect bunch of videos that suit the sound perfectly. Kicker Conspiracy is my favourite, but that might just be because it's my favourite song of the bunch. And the dancing on Eat Y'self Fitter is a pretty fantastic moment.
