Title: Levitate
Description: Was Mr Hughes right?

delmore - June 26, 2010 01:47 AM (GMT)
TWO CHOICES
TWO CHOICES

You can indicate 2 choices, one for: do you have the album; the other is to inquire your means of acquiring it.

I wish I made this clear in the title fields, but the poll will sink to oblivion anyway so I won't getted bugged about it. :banghead:

**Option 2 ran two opposite choices together, invalidating the whole thing. Oh well.**
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being in a limbo of law along with Marshall Suite and Post-Nearly Man, looking like it's going to stay there, what hope for those who missed out the first round?

I wish there were other groups good enough to be this brilliantly bad. :)

I found mine used and cheap at a 2nd-hander called Sonic Boom. Store names are so picaresque.

I'm listening right now. :)

delmore - June 26, 2010 02:39 AM (GMT)
I made a bubu. NB:

This is a 2-choice poll so you can BOTH say whthr you got it and HOW you got .

I'll repeat this in the previous post. What a mess!

Völlïg Tötäll - June 26, 2010 03:01 AM (GMT)
I'm not ashamed to admit that i voted the firstest option. :)

Bit too 'arty' for my taste. Not that i am proud to be the simpleton i am. :ohdear:

Aubrey The Cat - June 26, 2010 08:38 AM (GMT)
I got it on the day of release, from Camden for some reason - I think maybe I got a Dingwall ticket on the same day, and that would have been the the M Clarke, Polythene drummer, Mark and Julia concert, wouldn't it? I got a copy for my brother as well. When I got home I listened to it while making notes on each song in my diary. I was excited; and I thought (and still think) that it was good. I got the ep with it as well.

I remember someone putting it on at a gathering after a drink in a pub (it was not me, but someone I had given a tape to). Someone else asked for it to be turned off before Hurricane Edward had finished.

(Did not vote; one of my choices is mixed up with another one that says the opposite.)

Chip Priest - June 26, 2010 08:43 AM (GMT)
Flogged mine last year, I think.

WetWetWet - June 26, 2010 09:11 AM (GMT)
I got it as a birthday present from a friend :)

duckpin236 - June 26, 2010 11:08 AM (GMT)
bought it when it came out

Orphistic - June 26, 2010 11:12 AM (GMT)
I got it cheap from a store and love it.

Original CD option.

Mere Pseud. - June 26, 2010 11:29 AM (GMT)
Like all other regular Fall albums since 1980 I bought it right after its release, complete with bonus disc. B)

It might remain my least favourite studio album, especially when I compare the individual songs with live recordings from that period. However there's no way I will ever give it away. RTL and PBL took me more than 15 years to fully appreciate, so there's still hope it will rise in my personal estimation.

duckpin236 - June 26, 2010 11:41 AM (GMT)
i feel like you do: least favorite but hoping for eventual appreciation. in the usa, i only got the one disc :(

Buy Kurious! - June 26, 2010 12:27 PM (GMT)
My good friend sent me a copy of it. :girl2:

duckpin236 - June 26, 2010 12:47 PM (GMT)
there's a Levitate vinyl LP for sale on usa ebay with two days to go now...it's located in the UK so maybe it's listed on UK eBay

Drjohnrock - June 26, 2010 01:52 PM (GMT)
The US edition came out, what, 8 months or more after the UK version? Something like that. <_< In any event, I bought the US CD new not too long after its release--just the single disc. Did the bonus disc ever get a US release? Probably not. <_< <_<

duckpin236 - June 26, 2010 02:00 PM (GMT)
when i bought the Levitate CD i thought, "well i've got it, hope i like it" not knowing it had been released in a different, and arguably better, format in the UK. as far as i knew i had the real thing :) but NO i had only the USA version which, as it turned out, has been OK, formatwise

nairng - June 26, 2010 10:27 PM (GMT)
I got it on vinyl off eBay about a year ago for £15, give or take - so I've ticked 'cheap off ebay' (relatively cheap anyway!)

Top lp, easily in my top 5.

Having said that, I don't like jungle rock or masquerade.

I love the way they were left somewhat lacking in the guitar dept, so ended up doing Hurricane, Quartet and Spencer with essentially just drum and bass - and they are brilliant.

Title track is a total masterpiece of composition, production, lyricism, you name it.

Lp unfairly dissed too often on this forum imho.

Mr hughes was right (in retrospect).

It is.

£67 and rising.

My 2CD was off ebay - a snip at £7 from a Yank. :)

flickeringlexicon - June 26, 2010 10:32 PM (GMT)
I bought it about a month after it came out, from a budget 'cut-out' bin. That was the 1 disc, U.S. version (a fantastic FoF member sorted me out with Disc 2). B) It's been in my Top 5 Fall albums ever since, I doubt it's going to budge. I also love the 'Inch' E.P.

Mark E Smith Made Me Cry - July 7, 2010 08:54 PM (GMT)
I bought Levitate in HMV London in 1999, the year of my regaining The Fall sense after not buying anything since the mid 90s after buying everything on release since '86. I wasn't anti, I was just doing too much.

I'm pretty sure I bought the very last new copy on sale in central London, I was a frequent Fall section visitor in record shops, and never saw it again. It was the 2CD version and the case was really fucked, I presume it had been sitting there unwanted in Bond St since '97 :(

Harold_P - July 9, 2010 02:08 PM (GMT)
I found on one of those CD Universe sites for about £10-15. I was a complete and utter pranny to pass up a discounted Marshall Suite. :banghead:

New Profile Razor Unit - July 9, 2010 03:15 PM (GMT)
Strange to relate, but I don't often remember where I've bought a record. But with Levitate I distictly remember buying it on a whim at the Our Price record store on the concourse at Waterloo Station during the 20 minutes I had to wait until my train departed.

It has the bonus CD as well.

Divvey - July 10, 2010 12:17 AM (GMT)
on release, bonus cd included. Didn't know what to make of it at the time but about a year later I saw it for the unique, classic it is.

Starsky-Tandoori - July 10, 2010 12:45 AM (GMT)
I bought it the week it was released, with the bonus CD. I wasn't sure about it for along while. I really love it now. No matter how hard I try I can't for the life of me remember where I bought it ... but it would have been some record shop, somewhere in London ...

This exactly...

Kapitän - July 10, 2010 12:54 PM (GMT)
Bought it through amazon, from a 2nd hand retailer. It was still in it's plastic wrap though.

No bonus cd included, but have since downloaded that off the net.

duckpin236 - July 10, 2010 01:36 PM (GMT)
From the "I wondered when he would say that" department:

I think the two EPs the album generated are essential; they are wonderful and make for an effective mini-album when played back to back.

Now I've said it again. BTW, The Masquerage 10 inch single isn't all that great but it's usually offered at a reasonable price, which I guess is like saying in a restaurant, "The food is awful but at least the portions are large."

I'll have to look out for this 'Masquerage' rarity. :)

duckpin236 - July 10, 2010 01:45 PM (GMT)
Yes, apparently the bid to do the cover was awarded to a firm who cut costs by eliminating the proofreader position. Reminds one of the time Jimmy Raney finally got a label to release a jazz recording under his own name and misspelled his name "Ramey"...How do your show you friends that? You worked hard on the music, did the arrangements and then, Letdown City.
Anyway, the Masguerage 10 incher usually goes for $4 instead of $3.

In that case, I'll give it a miss.

duckpin236 - July 10, 2010 01:57 PM (GMT)
All things considered, I'd give it a miss also...not a worth representation of The Fall

Basmikel - July 21, 2010 07:52 PM (GMT)
Got the 1CD in a trade with a friendly Fofer. The last "old" Fall original I got after hearing IWS when it was fairly new. In my top 5 after about a month of listening. Their most unique record compared to the rest of my collection. I love it all except for the horrible Jungle Rock, which I thought I'd despise in any form until I downloaded the Black Cat DVD, where it's an absolutely stunning closer! Unfortunately followed by the Brownies gig...I guess they got it right on the last take.

FAT BLOB - July 21, 2010 09:14 PM (GMT)
I bought the CD in a used record store in 1999 for $5. I had given up on The Fall at that point, convinced that the 90s only produced bland electronic-indie sounding crap. What a surprise when I put it on! Brilliant. I listened to it non-stop for the next month. It's still one of my favorites and it made me reevaluate my opinion towards the 90s work.

Gaspop - August 23, 2010 03:05 PM (GMT)
Finally got a copy of this. I've listened to it many times over the last few weeks and I can easily say it's in my top five. The production is probably my favourite among all Fall albums.

Also, am I the only one who really likes Jungle Rock? :P

duckpin236 - August 23, 2010 03:13 PM (GMT)
No. That's my favorite track on the album.

Starsky-Tandoori - August 23, 2010 03:30 PM (GMT)
I used to take this to work regularly ... blast it out in the small hours, but I've developed a bit of paranoia about it ... what if my bag gets snatched on the way? They can have the money .. only ever have less than a tenner cash anyway... but Levitate might just get chucked in a pond ... or in the bushes ...

Maybe the thieving bastard will take it home and play it for his gangsta pals - gawd help him then!

799thJim - August 23, 2010 04:19 PM (GMT)
bought it in Nottingham Selectadisc about 4 years ago, for £3.99, bargain :)

Gaspop - August 23, 2010 04:30 PM (GMT)
Bought a copy on vinyl for about £90 :( . I's the most treasured item in my record collection though, and if I ever sell it I'm sure I'll get that money back.

worthless recluse - August 24, 2010 12:08 AM (GMT)
One of my most exciting music buying experiences. I used to check the Fall section regularly in record shops (I also stumbled across reissues of Dragnet and Hex in this way after years of checking). I saw this new CD in HMV, and assumed it was yet another inessential comp, but then I looked at the unfamiliar track titles and realised it was a new album which I hadn't known about! Purchased and hurriedly brought home, loved it immediately. At the time I was relying on monthly magazines for music info, so different from now.

James M - August 24, 2010 04:36 AM (GMT)
I bought this on one of the strangest days of my life. Drove into the city specifically to pick it up. Listened to the first few tracks while driving to a coffee shop where I was to meet an old high school buddy who had been going through some rough times.

We hadn't seen each other in years-- had an awkward conversation, went for sandwiches, more awkward conversation, saw Melville's Le Samourai at the local art cinema... All day, Levitate was playing on the car stereo.

I now associate the album with those unbridgeable gaps that open up between adolescence and adulthood, between once-inseparable friends. It has a melancholy flavor for me, not necessarily unwelcome for that.

MOD-MOCK-GOTH - August 24, 2010 07:55 AM (GMT)
as with most 90s fall albums was purchased from a $10 cd store about six years ago
