Title: Being spotted as a Fall fan
Description: Meeting other members of the ol' gang...

JonN - August 16, 2004 07:49 AM (GMT)
I was at the "Summer Sundae" Festival in Leicester on Saturday, a small-scale Reading in the grounds of the University with a fairly varied mixture of bands: Kings Of Convenience and all that lot, in an Acoustic hall; a load of Descendents-imitators/Busted-wannabes in the "Rising" Tent; jazzy World music things in the tent I visited least; and various rising indie hopefuls such as The Ordinary Boys and Dogs Die In Hot Cars on the main stage, headline act being Super Furry Animals.

Anyway. I went along wearing my "Dragnet" T-shirt that I ordered off that US website mentioned here a while ago, and got the following reactions:

(1) at the stall selling Folk CDs, the middle-aged hippy lady running it suddenly noticed I was wearing a Fall shirt and offered me a copy of the "50,000 Fans..." CD, which she inexplicably had a stock off, hidden away behind all the Fairport Convention and Carole King reissues.

(2) waiting around near the gents, a balding middle-aged man with a passing resemblance to Steve Hanley peered confusedly at me for a few seconds, before declaring: "Don't see many of them... That's a top album! 'Spector Vs. Rector'!!" and then wandering off.

And so, amidst the Mexican socialist jazz and US emo-careerists I encountered that day, I received further confirmation that, as a Fall fan, I was part of the secret world movement that, like the agents of Cthulu, worked silently and anonymously all over the world and only need to disclose themselves when the special signals were given - such as wearing a "Dragnet" T-shirt.

Well I spent all day Saturday wandering around Cleethorpes in me COTC Tee shirt and didn't even get so much as a knowing look. Did get very drunk though which may expalin why no one approached me.

Went to a Flaming Lips gig (good fun) and I booed loudly when Red Hot Chilli Peppers were mentioned (I'd had a few) and I got some hard stares from elements in the crowd. Not sure if they spotted me as a Fall fan but certainly had me down as a c---.
