Title: madonna & the fall
Description: at Hacienda: where you there?

We were getting rid of some old things when I came across a copy of Andrew Morton's "Madonna" (St Martin's Press, 2001) and started reading it:

On an early UK promo-tour for a pre-Virgin single, Madonna and entourage

"traveled north to play the Hacienda Club in Manchester. While they enjoyed meeting the Smiths, THE FALL, and Jools Holland, their act failed miserably with audiences" (p118).

Being a Yank, I wasn't there, doesn't surprise me about who she met though, didn't she play the Hacienda a couple of times?

There's an anecdote about Madonna opening a US gig for A Certain Ratio, before she signed with Sire, in the booklet to their Early compilation CD. They wouldn't let her move their equipment on the stage. :D

Thought about seeing Madonna once, when the Beastie Boys opened for her, would've loved to see what kind of reception they got.

...that would be the musical based on Kevin Costner's apoco-disaster flick?

madonna did a thing at the hacienda that was filmed for the tube (80s tv show). around the time of holiday. i don't think it was part of a gig and i'm almost certain the fall had nothing to do with it. i think i read somewhere that hooky was there and he talks about how he thought she was a bit chubby.

i saw the fall at the hac in 1984 on the perverted by language tour (although by this time the set was mainly wonderful and frightening world stuff), but i can confirm that madonna was not on the bill

I recall seeing Madonna dancing on the florr or the Hacienda on the Tube, singing I think, Holiday. It seemed very "fish out of water" don't recall Fall, but Smiffs on same show. Audience stood round utterly bemused, it had a schoolyard feel to it.

God, I just had a terrible premonition they'll do Lock Stock as a musical, funded by Madonna.. maybe they'll even get Ben "I'm a sell-out cunt" Elton to help with dialogue..

Here's a thought.. the Ben Elton Fall musical!! Title suggestions please.. I'll kick off with Five Wacky English Proletarian Idiots.. or The North Will Rise Again

The quote I started with doesn't suggest they were on the same bill (which I actually wouldn't find that odd given early 80s genre confusion and the fact that Madonna then had some "street cred") but rather that they MET at all.

Did MES meet her and think, "hmm, add some US cheesecake to the band in the next few months..."

It would have been interesting, though. I wouldn't rule out a duet - "Don't go breaking my heart"?

Or a medley of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and "Marquis Cha Cha"

In reference to Madonna's performance on the Tube (filmed in Factory) I seem to remember Tony Wilson making a comment some time later that he thought Madonna would never get anywhere as she was too fat. -_-
