Description: what exactly is it?
repeater - August 7, 2004 09:24 AM (GMT)
ok, i'm not sure if this has been covered before but...
it's always bugged me.
what exactly IS Cog Sinister?
i was somehow under the impression that it was The Fall's OWN label....perhaps it once was?

what's the deal then? who runs it? does it really exist? are there other world's beyond ours that also contain life??? ;)
kiespijn - August 7, 2004 09:39 AM (GMT)
It's the record label mes set up in the eighties, which ended up simply for The Fall.
Their manchester office something like Fall HQ?!

cog 2 - the disparate cogscienti.....on vinyl.... is worth getting [3 from john the postman, 2 by the hamsters (this is not the hamsters u r likely to get hold of ..... but a different band),and 8 other tracks]
repeater - August 8, 2004 04:32 AM (GMT)
ok...
but do they still run it?
obviously just Fall records come out with that label on it...but it's odd that they'd have their own label and NOT use it for new records and such...see what i'm getting at???

You mean new records for *other* artists? I assume they can't afford to release anybody else's records as they're trying to stay afloat themselves.

no i meant THEIR new records...
i mean...we see how messed up the Fall catalog has been...so many things on different labels and such...it seems to me they could do it on their OWN label...other than re-issues, etc.

Well, doesn't Are You Are Missing Winner count as a self-release?

aaahhh...yes...you're correct.
it still strikes me as funny though...only THAT record gets a "self release" whereas the others haven't....
anyway, thanx for the reminder there REX B)
another funny anecdote to that...you could actually find AYAMW pretty easily in the states...the other newer albums have been more difficult to hunt down...hmmm <_<
on edit: with the obvious exception of TRNFLP which is the only newer album to actually get a stateside domestic release...The Unutterable, The Marshall Suite, etc...are extremely hard to find...

Really? What have you had trouble finding? I paid something like $26 or so for AYAMW (seems wrong, doesn't it) because it was harder to find, but I used to see the Unutterable, Marshall, Levitate all over the place for fairly cheap. Maybe those particular labels (Artful, Eagle, etc.) just had spotty distribution in the States.

Course there's nothing to stop ME Smith from trading as Cog Sinister as a sole trader. Which I presume happened with Voiceprint as licensee. The Sanctuary releases record the copyright as being owned by MES.

Around the time of the notorious shoddy reissues, I pictured the Cog Sinister "staff" as consisting of a drunken Salford youngster in a dusty lock-up copying scratchy old vinyl from a dansette onto a cdr burner while spilling beer over both and scrawling notes about Bend Sister and Hex Education Hour on the back of a fag packet.

I have been looking to fill that position my entire life...

The special Two Librans 7" came with letter-headed paper from cog sinister rather than voiceprint; and it refers to them losing the rights for the albums to Sanctuary, rather than voiceprint, again.
REX - August 12, 2004 03:40 PM (GMT)
Special 2 Librans 7"? Good god, just when you think you're aware of everything they put out... how many did they press, five?
kiespijn - August 12, 2004 04:46 PM (GMT)
Five hundred. You know, the special offer cd of unreleased material from voiceprint records, obtainable only by cut +paste of eight tokens off previous reissues ..if you could believe it.
The 7" made amends for the cd which they were unable to produce after all, due to rights being passed on to Sanctuary.
The version of Two Librans is a demo, apparently "rough as hell", though I've yet to hear it for lack of a turntable
