Title: The Fall on the Simpsons
Description: would it happen?
A.Smith - August 6, 2004 03:43 PM (GMT)
Have there ever been any fall references in the Simpsons, or are the Fall just too obscure to fall under the Simpsons pop culture radar?
I breifly thought that the episode "I am Furious, Yellow" was a reference, till I found oua bout the porn film that spawnbed both references.

You mean you missed the "No place like Home-uh" episode where Homer's English cousin Mark visited and sacked everyone at the power plant while on a guided tour? Damn! :banghead:

I recorded a rap in 1996 that rhymed "diaper" and "windshield wiper."
I just noticed that a recent (circa 2003?) Simpsons episode included a rap (delivered by one of Milhouse's Capital City "friends") that had the same rhyme.
The closest thing I can think of to a Fall reference is the appearance of the ghost of famed fictitious and high-larious Nazi, Col. Klink.

Funny, I was just musing the other day (as I often tend to do) on the fact that The Simpsons & The Fall are two long-running endeavours which are incredibly rich in references to contemporary life, and you can come up with a quote about almost anything from both... yet I can't really think of anything referenced similarly in both... seems odd, though I suppose MES's lyrics are very obviously from a N. English perspective, and the Simpsons are a broad view of the US... and they're very different in tone...
gorillabat - August 6, 2004 05:09 PM (GMT)
I think Matt Groening is certainly hip enough to be into the Fall. In fact, he used to own an independent record store, and I've heard him reference some pretty cool bands (not to mention having SY on the show), so I am fairly sure of it.
Here's my hope for a plot involving Mark E. doing a guest voiceover appearance:
Moe the bartender has fallen ill. His distant cousin Monty from the north of England arrives in Springfield to help run Moe's Tavern. Surefire comedy hijinx ensue.

yeah, I am a law type, but one who thinks copyright has gotten way outta hand.
Even if the writers somehow heard my song (sent out about 750 copies, so its possible), I will assume the use was fair under the standards of 17 USC 107.

You mean "purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research"? Naah, it's blatant misuse. These animated plagiarists need sorting out once & for all, before the whole world descends into creative anarchy.

What a beautiful dream! I picture it like Lionel Hutz's dream of a world without lawyers.

the fall on the simpsons would be totally sweet.

Matt Groening's favorite album of all time is "Trout Mask Replica". You may or my not find that interesting. <_<

He's a long-time big fan... I recall him on the BBC Late Show documentary recounting how the local freaks paled into dull normality the moment the band took the stage.

Further thoughts on fair use:
actually the portion of the statute you quote is not the operative part of the fair use statute in most cases, and the "purposes such as" part that you quote do not really represent a safe harbor (although some other sections, like 108, I think) do provide safe harbors, but very narrow ones that are not much help in most real world circumstances. The operative part of the fair use statute (section 107) is usually the four (non-exclusive) factors it enumerates, with the most important factor being the fourth one relating to the commercial nature of the use.
There are two perceived problems with the fair use statute:
1. It is radically indeterminate. As Professor Lessig so eloquently puts it, it merely represents a right to hire a lawyer (which may not be much of a problem for FOX, but it is a problem for most people (even if they happen to be lawyers)).
2. Newer copyright laws like the Digital Millenium Copyright Law probably effectively write the fair use exception out of existence for data distributed in encrypted formats (as music increasingly is).
Final note: I hope this does not amount to a political commentary because I have promised not to make political comments here. I consider this discussion to factual, rather than opinion, and to be more of an artistic issue than a political one. However, if anyone is offended by these fair use law remarks, just let me know and I will self-delete all of these remarks without complaint.

I know, but I have shown myself to be irresponsible in this area in the past on this board so I have to be more careful than everybody else. I am grateful that I still exist on this board and I want to keep it that way.

I do say that MES is best fit for family guy, since he is pretty funny and its a funny show, and some of the things that mes would say would be classics.

Didn't they have some Family Guy episode with a British theme, involving the Drunken Clam becoming a pub or something (USian for summat).

yes the Drunken Clam is the place where peter likes to drink at.

never heard of this guy. What episode was this, then i might remember.
gorillabat - August 7, 2004 09:12 PM (GMT)
Thomas Pynchon is a notoriously reclusive author. He has written Gravity's Rainbow, V, The Crying of Lot 49, Vineland and (most recently) Mason & Dixon. Perhaps some others I'm unfamiliar with. It ain't light reading.
He played himself (with a paper sack over his head) in the Simpsons episode "Diary of a Mad Housewife". I have seen this episode but could not give you a synopsis. Too many other episodes.
