Title: The Chisellers

Martin - August 6, 2004 09:16 AM (GMT)
I've always wanted to do a poll on this. Some think it's too fiddly, too complex, with too many time changes, different sections, stupid lyrics. Others, like me, like it a lot...and enjoy the way in which it changes quite considerably in its live incarnations. What do you think?

I love it.
Best Fall single in my opinion.

Prize to anyone who can sort out the diiferences between The Chisilers, Chilinism, Chilinist and Interlude/Chilinism.

And to anyone who can explain the lyrics...

One of them has a 20 second burst of pumping techno tagged into the middle of it. I'll have to get back to you which one it is. I think it's Chilinism. PS - despite the jocular nature of many of my posts, this is actually true. There is a 20 second, ill-fitting bit of techno jammed into one version. It sounds great, really wakes you up!

Actually, I think the techno/disco passage is in the middle of "Chilinist," which I think is the longest (i.e. most extended) version of the song if you don't count "Interlude" as part of "Chilinism."

BY THE WAY, it's called "Chinilism" on my copy of the single (N and L reversed). Weird.

Ask chase, he seems interested in this song.

I think you should have a "Not Sure" or "50/50"

I'm a 50/50 - I don't dislike it, it's just a wee bit dull, frankly... somewhere around my Fall middling range, which isn't bad.

Didn't MES say in an interview somewhere that the only time he felt lost as an artist was during the Light User Syndrome period? I find this album, plus all singles, commercially released live material etc from this era to be about as close to truly "bad" as the Fall have come. It sounds like a depressing self-parody to me.

I don't like it, but it could have been great. The thing that irritates me about it is Mike Bennets contribution. They might as well have got Mr Bennet from Take Hart in to ruin it - or maybr they did.

For me though, LUS was a bit of a return to form for the Fall as I was not so keen on the 90's stuff until this album came out and re-affirmed my faith in the Fall. He Pep, Das Vulture, Cheetham Hill and DIY Meat seemed like the best stuff in a long time, and things have only got better since then.

I love The Fall but the stuff from Extricate to Cerebral Caustic was very patchy and it was only the live shows that kept me interested during that period. Particularly with Cerebral Caustic as I have never liked that album but the live versions of many of the songs on that were brilliant.

Do you remember Brie E Smith?

Dice Man - September 21, 2005 09:03 AM (GMT)
I definitely like it. Some would call it three songs in one, but maybe that's exactly what I like about it. It never gets boring - so much going on in it.

Prefer the album-version ("Interlude/Chinilism") over the single.
