Title: Lyrics that pop in to your head
athlete not cured - August 5, 2004 09:15 PM (GMT)
Then you can't remember where they are from and it annoys you, this happens to me all the time.
Tonight it's "it was an accident I didn't mean it" which after much thought I'm sure is a Delta 5 song but not sure which one it'll bug me until I find out, do this happen to you ?
Big Chief Mango Chutney XIV - August 5, 2004 10:19 PM (GMT)
Strangely enough it happened tonight. I was listening to "I am Kurious Oranj", to the song "Win Fall CD 2088AD" when I suddenly realised (didn't actually strike me until tonight bizzarely) that the words:
"Check the record
Check the record
Check the guy's track record"
were familiar to me already. Very familiar infact. Like a lot of things on IAKO I realised that they were probably used in an earlier Fall song. Whatsmore, I know that I have listened to the song in question many, many times. But I can't recall its name off the top of my head. It's been bugging me all night! I realised that I could spend hours trawling the Lyrics Parade or listening to my entire Fall catalogue, but since Athlete Not Cured had just posted this then I thought I could save myself a lot of time. Any ideas?
P.S. I know the answer will probably seem blindingly obvious once someone tells me; but think of it as a quiz...

The only lyrics that inexplicably get stuck in my head are always from song that I know, but wish I didn't. Phrases from Christopher Cross songs, the "Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Satur-DAYYY Love" refrain from the minor adult contemporary/R&B late-80's chart-hit by Cherrelle (featuring Alexander O'Neal) ... these are the kindsa songs that plague me from time to time.
It is then that I call on my ace in the hole ... I force myself to think about the Sockeye song which repeats "Steve Albini f***ed Pac Man! Steve Albini f***ed Pac Man!"
It's like lemon sorbet for my mind.
Not too often do Fall lyrics get stuck in my head except maybe the part in "The Classical" about the "new high-profile razor unit." I do, however, often find myself humming the bass guitar parts and tapping my fingers on my desk to Fall songs. And I always think about just stepping sideways when I'm coming down steep mountain slopes on my little mountaineering excursions.

Holy shit! That's me! It's a damn curse I tells ya. So many mornings I wake up and the chorus of some song I detest will start playing in my head endlessly.
My wife has pointed out several times that I sometimes begin singing these cringeworthy songs from the 70s and 80s and I don't even realize it.
Thankfully my listening of late has been so Fall-centered that their songs are playing in my mental jukebox more often.
"I say what about the meek-uh
I say they got a bloody cheek-ah..."
!!!

I am forever struggling with "You are bit-by-bit reticent" or "Unfortunately I'm coming from a bad end" in my head.
And this morning "God damn the pedantic Welsh".

Seaons in the Sun by Terry Jacks is a right bugger to shift, I can tell ya - can't bleedin' stand it but, man, that sinks a plunger right into the hippocampus (and that isn't the part of university where hippos live, before anyone asks...)

In work I regularly come across the name Caroline King (a person I've never met), which without fail, sends me into:
Caroline King / We are sharing the same dream / and our hearts they beat as one / no more love on the run

Oh, god...that song...I think I was about 7 when it was on the radio all the time. This is why whether I think it is "good" or not, I have some affection for old Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Queen, yes, even ABBA...things I heard when the radio was the only access I had to music and my older sisters controlled the airwaves.
I can't get away from them because they were the musical accompaniment to my early years. I might hate a lot of the songs on principal, but if I chance to hear one of them somewhere, I smile. I also like "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash and "Ooh Child" by the 5 Stairsteps for this same reason. An ELO song or two. Some of them were just cheesy, candified, but honest pop songs for the time. I still think Lindsay Buckingham imbued Fleetwood Mac with a certain dark streak and maybe something approching avant garde touches.
I would like to qualify this by saying I don't actually own anything by any of the aforementioned acts. :)

This is fucking hilarious, Recluse. Oh christ. Do you sing it out loud?
What if in a parallel universe, her alternate self finds herself singin some song with your name in it? "Like a worthless recluse" to the tune of Rhinestone Cowboy. "Worthless Recluse, why don't you come to your senses" (The Eagles- Desperado.)
My god, would the Eagles have existed in this other universe?

i might get the rachel stevens cd  ....her lyrics r a bit crap at times..but the tunes r good so far...i like some pop .... i like the 'hey!' chantin on 'some girls' [not the racey song]...there seems a 70s glam rock on the verse..... sparta fc really for the pop world...well that's my strange take on it. :)
am i just in love with her ?

You can say that again.
My last several CD purchases, outside of Fall discs, go sth like this:
Gang of Four- Entertainment!/Yellow Ep, Solid Gold
Birthday Party- Hee Haw
Kraftwerk- Radioactivity
PiL- Flowers of Romance
Jesus and Mary Chain- Psychocandy
Talk Talk- Spirit of Eden
Alien Sex Fiend- Drive My Rocket comp.
Iggy- Live '77 TV Eye
Hunters and Collectors- Jaws of Life
Ramones- It's Alive
Tenpole Tudor- 2 disc Collection
Velvet Underground- Another View
The Vapors- New Clear Days/Magnets
Eno- Taking Tiger Mt. (new, remastered blahblahblah)
...and so on. I notice that almost all of these are 20 or more years old. And I don't like very many of them nearly as much as I used to then.
The older ones, like the Kraftwerk, Velvets and Eno are perennial favorites. Deathless.
But I can't remember the last time I bought a "new" album...I guess the last Polysics record, or Lightning Bolt's "Wonderful Rainbow" album...
