Title: Girl Group Quiz
Description: Rock Groups Staffed by Girls
duckpin236 - November 19, 2009 04:59 PM (GMT)
This "girl group" quiz is mainly skewed toward the early years and that means there's a lot of doowop and related and little toward the soul and Motown sides.
Questions are weighted and the narrator is a ficticious member of the particular group.
Have fun and don't forget to google til your eyes bubble!
1. We were the first girl group to chart in the modern rock era. Others were recording but we got on the national charts even though we were from the L.A. area far from the center of thing at that time.
2 points for our name; 2 points for our song; and two points for the name of our lead singer's brother whose group sold way more records then we ever did . One point for his group. A 7 point question. 2 points for ORPH so far; 5 are in playDELMORE scores with Cornel Gunter - 2 points! RAINMASTER - 2 points for Oop Shoop! RAINMASTER cores the last point for The Coasters FLEXIBLE LEXICON gets 2 points for pointing out confusion caused by the quiz constructor and naming Mr Gunter's first group, the immortal Platters. Well Done!
2. She started out singing lead for the Blosoms. She also sang lead, and charted, for two other groups and as a solo. Another west coast girl and you've all heard her voice. 2 points. BUY KURIOUS
3. Our first song didn't go anywhere but our second song was a huge hit and probably the biggest girl group single up to that point. I can't say enough about out lead singer - positively unique - but try, if you can, to listen to us and not concentrate on her: we were good too. She left early and we carried on but no one replaces an instant legend. 3 points for the group and 2 points for the song. 5 totalBUY KURIOUS for The Chantels and "Maybe"
4. We had a couple of charters and became the Raelettes.. 4 points. DELMORE
5. We reheared at the local cathedral and our lead singer took her name from one of the nuns who lived at the convent in the neighborhood. Music lovers in the UK have about as good a chance of getting our name as anyone because we charted there. 4 points cuz we're generous and like the UK. RAINMASTER for Reparata & The Delrons
6. We weren't the first to chart, we were the second but we had more hits than # 1. There were five of us and we had a unique, sometimes staccato, sound. 3 points. 1 point for our first hit. total: 4 points ORPHISTIC for the Bobbettes and we throw in the song "Mr Lee" because of his persistence
7. Our lead singer changed her name and our group featured her name. She went on to a big career as a solo as did our alto - two famous solo acts out of one group! Our first hit was a rock reworking of an old standard. That's enough to get you: 2 points for the group; 3 points for the second soloist; and 2 points for our first charting song. a 7 Point potential. DELMORE for Patti Labelle & The Bluebelles'Nona Hendryx/ I Sold My Heart to the Junkman
8. We were contemporaries of #1 and # 6 but I am telling you we were better; maybe we were the best because we had a ligitimate female bass and all the voices up through high soprano. As good as we were it didn't translate into stardom, just steady work. Many groups over the years have used our name or a close variation. That's really the only clue I have for you. 8 big points for what many think was the best early female rock group. ORPHISTIC The Hearts, a cruelly forgotten group today...8 points for # 8
9. A lot of people say girl groups were not doowop because we didn't have nonsense syllables by the background singers. Does "Doo lang, doo lang, doo lang" ring a bell to you? 4 points if it does.FRITTER
10. We charted on both the pop and R n' B lists and had a baritone backup girl. John Waters liked our biggest song enough to put it in a movie. 3 points for the group and 3 points for the song. A chance for 6 BUY KURIOUS
11. Poison Ivy of the Cramps seldom sang lead but she did this one time and kind of paid homage to us and out best known song. 2 points for us and 2 points for Ivy's song. 4 total SPIRING has nabbed 2; need the famous song that had a similar beginning and the group RAINMASTER - Josie Cotton
12.We charted seveal times. The last time was a song we would hear each year in the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. 2 points for us and 2 for the song. 4 total.DELMORE
13. After #3 hit, things for us girls slowed down until we came along a couple of years later. We were named after our lead singer and had eight hits within a seventeen month period. We had more hits over the years. Eight hits within seventeen months. 2 points if you can name us.FLICKERINGLEXICON - The Shirelles
14. My first group was The Peaches and we had a # 1 hit. I didn't stay long and carved out one of the legendary careers in R n' B, Rock, and Blues. Forty years a star and counting. 3 points. ORPHISTIC

10 is it Life's Too Short by The Lafayettes?
duckpin236 - November 19, 2009 05:21 PM (GMT)
Clues will be given at the one hour mark - wouldn't be fair to you to do it sooner - but it may cost a point off the generous score. I don't know, we'll see.
There are some easy ones still in play

Fritter, #3 is way earlier and still pretty well known. Their followup featured words from their hit.
duckpin236 - November 19, 2009 05:30 PM (GMT)
Yes BK: I'm Blue(The Gong Gong Song) by the Ikettes. One of the background singers had the second deepest voice I can recall for a pop/R n' B gruop.
Congrats!
