Title: Noughties albums - Studio albums only!
Description: By popular demand
elvischomsky - November 16, 2009 06:21 PM (GMT)
Apparently the other Noughties album poll was "pointless". :(

Well, misleading in results, more than utterly pointless... I think I phrased it much too harshly, my criticisms, in the end. Sorry about the hyperbole.
I can't choose between Unutturable or TRNFLP (FCoC) just yet, myself.
Will have to consider this for a bit & get back.
V. difficult poll, this one, as I love those two dearly, with a good amount of enjoyment derived from IWS as well.
Thanks for this!
Buy Kurious! - November 16, 2009 07:03 PM (GMT)
Normally, this would be how I rate them...
1. TRNFLP/COTC
2. The Unutterable
3. IWS
4. Reformation Post TLC.
5. Fall Heads Roll
6. Are You Are...
but I've been listening to IWS loads over the last couple of weeks and FHR and RPTLC are both favourites too, so.... I'm not sure anymore.
I shall mull....
elvischomsky - November 16, 2009 07:37 PM (GMT)
CAN SOME MORE PEOPLE VOTE IN THIS FUCKING POLL, PLEASE!!!! :cry2:
Snowy - November 16, 2009 07:44 PM (GMT)
No. I shall comment here and not vote. So rude.
1. TRNFLP/COTC
2. The Unutterable
3. IWS
4. Fall Heads Roll
5. Are You Are...
6. Reformation Post TLC.
See how I stole BK's list and did a bit of cutting and pasting?
flickeringlexicon - November 16, 2009 07:44 PM (GMT)
I'll vote as soon as I've heard all the albums on the list. Slow to catch up, me... :ohdear:
delmore - November 16, 2009 08:33 PM (GMT)
Unutterable.
Best of both the Nineties and the Noughties IMO.
To correct the posts that I know will follow this post:
Unutterable
IWS
RPTLC
AYAMW
COTC/TRNFLP
FHR
Curiously, a close call both for 2nd place and for last place.
And a special plug for the remastered AYMWinner - I thought it was nearly as lame as until the re-release.
rainmaster - November 16, 2009 09:56 PM (GMT)
The correct order is:
Unutterable
IWS
AYAMW
COTC/TRNFLP

The order of correctness in this totally pointless poll is:
Reformation Post TLC
The Real New Fall LP / Country On The Click
Imperial Wax Solvent
Fall Heads Roll
The Unutterable
Are You Are Missing Winner
:)

Love them all! Another excellent decade.
1. TRNFLP or COTC (both versions are great)
2. IWS (My first love, which could explain its unusually high placing here)
3. Unutterable (would be #1 if the second half was as good as the first)
4. RPTLC (I'm sure no one agrees, but I would've preferred a single LP without the over appreciated My Door & the two Stuffs. WLF isn't very inspired either.)
5. FHR (Mostly rather pale versions of great songs with a few obvious exceptions.)
6. AYAMW (Great fun, not a bad track, but no real masterpieces either. OK, maybe Crop-Dust.)
I have a feeling the new one will make the top three if rush released for christmas.

You're ALL wrong, it's:
1. The Unutterable
2. Imperial Wax Solvent
3. The Real New Fall LP
4. Are You Are Missing Winner
5. Fall Heads Roll
6. Reformation Post TLC
2 and 3 are very close.
All in all, a GREAT sequence of albums.

It's partly for sentimental reasons - it was the first new studio album to come out after my return from the wilderness. :)

not sure about 3 and 4, maybe the other way round... and tromatic reflexxions is better than any of these.

Could this be interpreted as it having been 10 years since they last did a decent album?

In a word, no. The first four of these albums are great to these ears:
1 Imperial Wax Solvent
2 Fall Heads Roll
3 Real New Fall
4 Unutterable
5 Reformation
6 Missing Winner

Starsky-Tandoori - November 19, 2009 10:11 AM (GMT)
See what I mean, I played Fall Heads Roll three times very loudly last night and now I'm wanting it in the number three spot. I expect The Unutterable to be secure in the No 1 spot though.
(By the way it has nothing to do with Blindness which wouldn't be in my top 20 Fall songs, maybe not even in my top 100??)
mirwais57 - November 19, 2009 11:30 AM (GMT)
Imperial Wax Solvent. I'm not a huge fan of the Pritchard albums.

I've come away with the impression that he thinks it's too "arty", maybe something about it being too obviously pro-toolsy as well, although whether this is attributable to direct quotes from the man himself or internet-based Chinese Whispers I have no idea.
Wasn't some of the material on it the subject of a successful claim for royalties on behalf of some of the ex-members? That would probably explain his alleged antipathy towards it, and its striking non-representation on 50,000 Fall Fans.
mixstreams - November 19, 2009 03:09 PM (GMT)
1. imperial wax solvent
2. the unutterable
3. are you are missing weiner
4. cotc
5. fall heads roll
6. reformation post tlc
and that is the last word on the matter.

No, I remember reading direct quotes where he said it was "too arty." But he often will make a comment like that about a previous LP as a means of describing how the new LP differs.
That's an interesting point about TU and 50,000 Fall Fans though. Hadn't thought about that before.
My table:
1. Reformation Post-TLC
2. Fall Heads Roll
3. Country on the Click
4. The Unutterable
5. Imperial Wax Solvent
6. Are You Are Missing Winner

Too many superlative tracks to pick only one?

Fall Heads Roll rocks my socks! Why do people seem to be a bit luke-warm toward it? Or maybe its a personal thing as its the album where I hopped on the Fall wagon... Though, I really like the no-nonsense, heads down guitariness of it
Three legged black grey hog - November 20, 2009 04:08 PM (GMT)
I think as many people on here rate FHR as don't. I'm not a fan, in the big scheme of Fall albums, but, y'know, it's still a Fall album, so there are a lot worse things out there. I really like Midnight Aspen and You Wanner - much of the rest of it's a bit indie-rock-by-numbers for me (Ride Away's a good wtf? opener, mind, but I'm not sure I'd want to hear it every day for the rest of my life. Or again, even. Seemed like a big old wasted opportunity with Blindness, too - although it casts the song in a(nother) different light it's definitely my least favourite of the officially released versions out there (the one on the US version of the album is better but still not as good as Peel, Interim or Hammersmith).
Ashley - November 20, 2009 04:57 PM (GMT)
See, how I like to think of FHR isn't as a dumbing-down indie by numbers affair but a scorching the earth album as its where the (in my opinion, of course) rather dated and sometimes cheesey sounding dance beats and electronic sounds are dropped in favour of balls to the wall garage. It really does it for me and Reformation after was ace aswell. I do however see what you mean about Ride Away. Except, I quite like that aswell, so perhaps I'm loosing my mind...
SimonC - November 20, 2009 09:56 PM (GMT)
RNFLP – up there with the very best Fall LPs…
TU – the best tracks (Two Librans, WB, Dr Buck etc) are as good as anything ever, but quality control does slip for some fairly large chunks of it…
IWS – great energetic garage rock, and with a generous twist of strangeness thrown in…
RFPLTC – could have been one of the truly greats – certainly has one the great Fall line-ups…it’s worth buying just to listen to Orpheo on Systematic Abuse – but it’s reduced by a less than sparkling production…
AYAMW – some great bits, but an awful lot of filler…
FHR – has the dubious privilege of being my least favourite Fall LP (jointly with Shift-Work), lumpen, dull indie…which is not to say it’s all bad…Ride Away (best track by a mile) is fun, Youwanner and Clasp Hands are pretty good…but overall…really disappointing…which is strange because almost the same line-up recorded the final Peel Session – and the Peel Blindness, What About Us…they’re about as good as it gets…and yet the FHR versions of these are really dull…the difference is the Jim Watts factor…
Exopsychicton - November 29, 2009 06:28 AM (GMT)
1 RNFLP-IWS-U- These are all brilliant to these ears and ultimately no better than each other. Clue? Grant Showbiz. Quite simple really. If he's there on half, the other sounds better.
2 RPTLC-AYAMW- Cruelly underrated and both are great fun. As distant from other Fall records as can be. Weird. Got what we're given and that is that. I prefer the Fall tight, but these unwinding drunkalongs are good for my ears now and then. Complaint- time gap between FHR and RPTLC should have brought out some real focus.
3 FHR- Liked it at first, but now I find it to be utter crap. The CD version of Blindness sends me into a fucking rage. It is Unutterably unlistenable to me. LP version almost saves the record. Too much 'singing'.
Not a bad decade. Compared with the nineties, I'd say the lows weren't as but neither were the highs.
Acton High Street - November 29, 2009 12:09 PM (GMT)
In whatever order, is there a more consistently good run of six studio LPs in the Fall's back catalogue?
