Given it quotes most of the lyrics wholesale.. I think you might have stumbled on something there

Don't think there was ever any secret about it - it was always an update on Hip Priest.

I always just assumed this was one of everyone's all-time favorite Fall tracks, but it doesn't appear to be so. I was especially surprised by its omission from 50,000 Fall Fans. Of course, I didn't realize that it's just a little bit cribbed from Gary Glitter repeated over and over until recently.

Maybe this should be on the "Things the Fall have stolen" thread, but it seems applicable here.
We all know Elves from WAFW is a lift from Wanna Be Your Dog by the Stooges.
I just got (lucky me) Extricate, Shift Work and Code: Selfish today. I have never heard them before.
Sing! Harpy from Extricate is lifted from Little Doll by the Stooges. He even gets the "uh-huh" in there. It is mutated and has some passages where it goes off from the Stooges riff, but it's definitely not my imagination. Bravo!

Lucky you, indeed! Contrary to what many think, these are all fine albums and I've come to appreciate them more over time (especially Code:Selfish). I just recently listened to Extricate for the first time since the early 90s, and I think it really holds up as a solid album. 'Bill Is Dead' is the high point of the album as far as I'm concerned.

I've pointed it out before, but many "borrowings" are mentioned on the
cover versions page in the discography.

My reptile-brain/knee-jerk reaction to the new (to me) Fall material that comprises Extricate through Middle Class Revolt (Cerebral Caustic is on its way to me but it is the last proper studio album I've yet to hear) is to say it is the weakest period for The Fall.
In my head there is a sort of break between Seminal Live and Extricate. This is because I stopped following the band and music in general for years just after the time Seminal Live came out. It wasn't because I disliked Seminal Live because I really love that record. It also seems like a division of their discography because Brix left between these two albums.
Not having heard Cerebral Caustic and since Light User Syndrome is only half brilliant/half mediocre to me (perhaps this is a kind of transitional album), there seems to me to be another break around this time with the "current" Fall era starting with Levitate up to the present. From Levitate on I deem every album kickass.
But you know, I have been making myself really listen to Infotainment and Middle Class Revolt and have been spinning Extricate, Shift-Work and Code:Selfish a lot today with headphones and I like all these albums more the more I hear them. The songs are more straightforward, as is the production. The lyrics are often very strong. Some songs on MCRevolt are particularly well written, lyrically speaking. It's easy to say the band were trying to achieve pop star status or were on auto pilot but I don't think that's the case. Deep in the grooves of the mix, there is a lot of oddball stuff going on within these records. I never thought I would hear (or enjoy) Fall albums like MCRevolt and Shift-Work that turn out to have a mellow, pastoral, direct quality to them. Ten-fifteen years ago I might not have given them the chance they deserve.
None of these albums hit me right off the bat like every other Fall album I've bought. But they grow on me definitely. In some ways they perhaps are more rewarding for that.
It has been great to be able to finally check out these albums I hear you all talking so much about. I really got a chuckle out of Crew Filth...it has been spoken of so much here. Looking forward to Cerebral Caustic....

Amen! Cerebral Caustic is great, but definitely a step away from MCR's pop and into the more eccentric territory that the Fall occupy now. Brace yourself for Bonkers in Phoenix.

well i hate this song... it's actually one of my least favourite songs ever by the Fall, i find it incredibly annoying... i was really surprised to see everyone seemed to like it so much

Cerebral Caustic seems to have the same polarizing effect that Are You Are Missing Winner does. Looking through past posts, it seems like these two are in a lot of ways the "love 'em or loathe 'em" albums, where some others like MCR or ShiftWork may simply leave some people flat.
So yes, I cannot wait for CC. I was led to believe I wouldn't care for AYAMW but it's right up there for me. I like their messy, half-finished sounding stuff.
BTW, after my last post on this thread I went and listened to Code:Selfish, Extricate and ShiftWork again. ShiftWork of all of them makes me pine to be in Gr. Britain very badly for some reason. Extricate is awfully heavy on cover songs, but they do innaressing things with them and the originals are pretty strong. Lots of good humor on some tracks. Selfish seems to be the one that grabs on the quickest. Out of this period it was the one I liked the most upon first hearing.
But so many tracks from these albums are beginning to go round in my head. I wait for them to reveal further treasures.

Me too Jane. It's so lame compared to Hip Priest. In fact, I thought it was actually meant to be deliberately bad the first time I heard it, like a piss-take of rock music.
BUT>> I will love it forever for one reason. Years ago when it came out, it was reviewed on a vid review segment on a TV show Night Network by a panel that included Donny Osmond. Osmond's view was as follows..
"I'm sorry, I understood this was a music show, and that is not music. It may be art or something else, but it definitely isn't music"
Imagine if he'd heard Mere Pseud Mag Ed or Spectre Vs Rector...

It *does* sound like a piss-take of rock. That's why it's great! There's nothing to the song at all beyond distilled rock energy, clearly what was intended.
That Osmond story is great. Sounds like some of my friends.
Cerebral Caustic -- nothing like AYAMW, really. Yes, it's underproduced, but obviously done with care and showcasing a band that knew what they were doing. It sounds finished.

The only chance would be if one of the producers or a punter happened to vid it.. I inhabit TV land, so I'll put feelers out and see if I can track down the producer.

The video to Big New Prinz is rather funny, as its with the michael clark group, but my mom loves it surprisingly.
