Title: Baseball?!
Description: Past stars of the game & tenuousity
duckpin236 - November 9, 2009 08:22 PM (GMT)
Ok. I don't expect a lot of interest in this but it does have the feature of being weighted by degree of difficulty
1 - Catcher - All right my nickname was pinned on me because of my proclivity to gain weight and not for the accomplishments to rival the original namesake.
That said: the fans liked me; the team mates liked me and the manager liked me. I still hold the record for highest season batting average by a catcher but that was before they raised the at-bat requirement. 4 points for my nameSONOFALWAYS for Babe Phelps
2. First Base - I am considered the first or second best first sacker of all time. 3 Most Valuable Player awards. And, when I retired, I ranked #2 in the all time home run column. Yankee pitcher Lefty Gomez once asked me how much pressure I had in my arms, as if they were tyres. My nickname was The Beast.1 pointBIGGESTLIBRARYYET for Jimmy Foxx
3. Second Base - I am usually considered the second best 19th century second basemen and I had league leading stats in fielding and a lifetime batting average well over .300.
You'll love my nickname even if you don't love baseball. Hit near the top of the order and averaged 100 runs scored per season. 4 points.CUPID CHILDS
4 - Third Base - I am still considered in the top five Hot Corner men of all time.
I used a 52 ounce bat and was a lifetime .300+ hitter; did even better in the 6 World Series I played in. During my Heyday I took two years off: one because management wouldn't pay me what I was worth and the other year my wife died and I didn't trust anyone else to care for the children. Hall of Famer. 2 Points FRANK "HOME RUN" BAKER
5 - Shortstop - Went through one season and made only 3 errors. Hit homers, drove in runs, and played my whole career for one team. Tall for a shortstop. Hall of Famer. 1 PointSONOFALWAYS for Cal Ripkin
6 - Left Field - I'm one of many who never really came back from World War 2. Sure I played, and was pretty good, but not like the years when I was on four consecutive World Champion teams. Hated my nickname. 2 Points CHARLIE KELLER
7 - Center Field - I played relatively few games in center; mostly I played right but when you see who's in right you'll know I was happy to move over. Batting champ and Hall of Famer. I left the game a little early because I wanted to spend my son's senior year in high school at home. 3000 hits. Hall of Fame. 2 PointsAL KALINE
8 - Right Field - I spoke German at home but I wasn't there long. Made it to the majors at age 19 and became the best left handed pitcher of the era. Because of my hitting, I stopped pitching and played right although first base was my favorite position. Many of my hitting records, and at least one of my pitching records, still are in the books. 1 Point for this most famous of all ballplarers.BIGGESTLIBRARYYET for Babe Ruth
9 - Right Handed Pitcher - Whitey Ford knows who I am because of all the many pitchers who have more than 200 decisions I - not Whitey - have the best won/lost percentage. Who cares if it's only by one ten thousandth of a point? After my arm gave out, I still had enough ability to play about 1000 games, mainly at first and in the outfield. Born and died in the 19th century but 5 points are yours if you know my nameDAVE FOUTZ
10 - Left Handed Pitcher - Warren Spahn won more games than I did but I am still considered the best lefty ever. I won 9 Earned Run Average titles and have the 4th best won/lost record ever. 300 game winner and Hall of Famer. I'd fight the man that says my name is worth more than 1 point.SONOFALWAYS for Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove
11 - What do all the above players have to do with duckpin? 3 points FLICKERINGLEXICON gets 3 points and SONOFALWAYS gets 2 points for identifying the state
please excuse the typos if any are left....have fun; be good; take two and hit to right

7 - Stan the Man Musial?

biggestlibraryyet - November 9, 2009 08:46 PM (GMT)

biggestlibraryyet - November 9, 2009 08:48 PM (GMT)
11. You saw all these cats at an all-star game when you were a wee laddie?
duckpin236 - November 9, 2009 08:52 PM (GMT)
7,10, & 11 - sorry, none correct this go-round.
The right handed pitcher died in the 19th century and although I am old, I'm no age record setter...I think I only saw 2 of these guys play in the majors
Google can be your friend
duckpin236 - November 9, 2009 08:53 PM (GMT)
#10: more victories; more ERA titles; better winning percentage than Sandy
duckpin236 - November 9, 2009 08:54 PM (GMT)
sorry, Stan The Man Musial got bumped by babe and Jimmy - too bad, he's one of my favorites of all time and I saw him in person in the '58 All Star game....what a player
biggestlibraryyet - November 9, 2009 09:00 PM (GMT)
I'm not going to google!
6. Joe DiMaggio? I know Ted Williams didn't play in the post-season much and I forget what position he played. :ohdear:

I try not to look at wins too much when ranking pitchers. You can give up 9 runs but if your team scores 10 you get the W.
Same deal if you give up 1 and your team scores 0.
(sour grapes for not knowing what pitcher you're talking about :P )
duckpin236 - November 9, 2009 09:03 PM (GMT)
# 6 played in the outfield next to Joe D, who was the centerfielder. If he would have kept up his prewar stats he'd be in the Hall
duckpin236 - November 9, 2009 09:04 PM (GMT)
#11 - :applaud: Righto! same state, although the state in question is the smallish state of Maryland, The points are yours
SonofAlways - November 9, 2009 09:05 PM (GMT)
5. Cal Ripkin Jr.
10. Lefty Grove.
And I think I've figured out the bonus question -- everyone on the list was born in Duckpin's home state of Maryland!
;)
(argghh....seconds late...)

I wasn't sure if it was your Birth State, or your current one... thanks for that. B) I'd like to split with Son Of Always who actually named the correct state! :D
To m, all sports questions are tough (I just answer Babe Ruth to all Baseball questions, and Wayne Gretsky to all Hockey ones. This almost always works.) :D

5 & 10 :applaud: you earn the points; well done. Grove won approx 100 games in the highest minors also

Very kind of you flickering! :)
1. Babe "The Blimp" Phelps.
Can't imagine why he didn't like that nickname.
duckpin236 - November 9, 2009 09:22 PM (GMT)
You got Babe Phelps :o good for you. They loved him in Brooklyn and Uncle Robby did too although he was far from being a star.
Called it quits, I believe, when the Dodgers went to Cuba for pre season exhibition games and The Blimp hated to be on the water and left the team and went home.
