4. The link is Dresden. I am guessing they were both there during the bombing? I know Schon was a Dresden player before becoming a manager.

3. What do you mean by 'untypically German'?
duckpin236 - October 14, 2009 05:44 PM (GMT)
The thing I remember most about the 1974 World Cup was that there was a new cup because some country had won 3 times and retired the old one. Now let me remember, if I can, who was that country...oh yes, it was Brasil, who in 1970 proved they could win without Garrincha just like in 1962 they proved that they could win without Pele...
Zoot Horn Polo - October 14, 2009 05:47 PM (GMT)
They were shit in 1974, though. A right bunch of cloggers and evil bastards.

| 3. What do you mean by 'untypically German'? |
Germans are well known for a certain character trait or strength...
Something about the preparations belied this

No towels were left down on any of the beaches surrounding the stadia.
duckpin236 - October 14, 2009 06:11 PM (GMT)
No, the team that represented Brasil in 1974 was undistinguished...you are 100% correct in that observation....did you read the part where I identified the country that retired the original trophy? :)

If Germany had annexed Holland they would have ensured a win by having both teams in the final. They overslept.

I can recall that the German team threatened a strike unless they received a certain amount of dosh for the title. Probably not the correct answer because this is not necessarily untypical for Germans.
Zoot Horn Polo - October 14, 2009 07:59 PM (GMT)
Anyway, it's confusing because there were TWO Germanys competing in the tournament.
I seem to recall a rather newsworthy game they played against each other.

West Germany allowed East Germany to beat them, thus avoiding playing Holland in the semis.

I thought the Cruyff kit thingy was fairly widely known...

Nonsense. Next you'll be claiming that West Germany and Austria conspired in 1982 to deny Algeria a rightful place in the second round.
Laughable.

Well the 8-0 score to Algeria seemed a tad over efficient.

1. Cruyff wore Puma boots while the Dutch team was sponsored by Adidas. He refused to wear Adidas kit (because he was contracted to Puma) so he had a kit made with two stripes on his shirt and shorts. I think he also blackened out the white stripes on his boots.

I saw a great documentary about it once, and there is NO WAY that West Germany deliberately lost. The players on both sides were told in no uncertain terms that this was the most important game of their lives.

The Germans were locked down in their hotel rooms.
The Dutch were shagging their wives in a jacuzzi and smoking joints, or something like that.
The preparations in question were not anything the players were responsible for...
duckpin236 - October 16, 2009 04:55 PM (GMT)
The Germans did not practice penalty kicks....that's pretty UnGerman for them[if true]
DJAsh - October 16, 2009 05:12 PM (GMT)
Think...ground preparations
SteveHamilton - October 16, 2009 05:15 PM (GMT)

Zoot Horn Polo - October 16, 2009 06:25 PM (GMT)
They built a large tunnel between the West side of the pitch and the East side.
duckpin236 - October 16, 2009 06:45 PM (GMT)
The chalk lines were more narrow than FIFA specified altho the field was within proper limits.
