45 minute set
Over Over/ Chino/ Wolf Kidult Man/ Fall Sound/ Duped/ Sloppy Floor/ I'm Not From Bury/ Sparta/ Reformation// Pat TripDispenser!- 2 drummers!// Psykick Dancehall

simpo - October 2, 2009 10:50 PM (GMT)
and a snatch of White Lightning performed after curfew - no amplifiers, no microphones, no guitars, just one unamplified drummer and MES conducting the crowd singing the words.

Quite a bizarre and short gig by recent standards.

Richard1961 - October 2, 2009 10:56 PM (GMT)
This was only my 4th Fall gig. Last time was at York, The Duchess, where they did almost a full two hours. I hope the usual ratio of decent length to ludicrously short gigs is better than three-to-one? It was a shame because Mark seemed to be having a great time, and as somebody next to me put it "They finally get to play in a decent venue in Leeds, and he goes and mucks it up".

I think he said 'mucks'.

conk - October 2, 2009 11:03 PM (GMT)
Possibly my 40th Fall gig, right up there in the top 10. Might add a sensible review when I've stopped grinning and had a kip...

BTW where were you all for the Nightingales set?

simpo - October 2, 2009 11:04 PM (GMT)
They were due on at 9.15... came on at 9.45. There was a curfew at 10.30 owing to a disco afterwards. I heard before the gig that times were going to be tight as the gruppe were driving up from Windsor, so I don't know if that's the reason for the late show.

simpo - October 2, 2009 11:05 PM (GMT)
I might add there was much disappointment that the Victoria alehouse has taken the brew The Fall off the menu prior to the gig. A missed opportunity for sure. An omen?

exiledmanc - October 2, 2009 11:05 PM (GMT)
Same line up,despite the photo in Mojo (apart from the extra drummer). Had a couple of pints in the Victoria before (good pub). Met a guy from York who reads the forum but hasn’t posted yet-introduce yourself sir. Got in the venue half way through the Nightingales set. Half a set too early. Didn’t like them one bit- especially the singer. Then a very long wait for The Fall. They keep pulling big crowds-upstairs was shut but another big turnout. MES on good form throughout, I wasn’t impressed by Pete when he first joined but he’s doing the business now, and Kieran’s come a long way since The Ritz gig. The Eagle’s always impressed me, which leaves one weak link. Eleni spoiled what would have been a really good gig in my opinion. Her keyboards ruined the 1st 2 songs till the PA guy turned them down and her backing vocals in Wolf K Man were awful. Shame really. Who’s on the subs bench Mark? The intro tape sounded like a sneak preview of the new album- Sloppy Floor I think. High point for me was the unexpected Pat Trip Dispenser.

Bit drunk . . . . pretty happy . . . . that was one hell of a pat trip

The promoters know Smith rarely gets on stage before 10pm so why did they book them into a venue with a 10.30 curfew? It's particularly annoying we only got 45 mins as the band were on fine form and Smith's vocals were stronger and clearer than I can ever remember. This isn't the first time this has happened either, it's time they stopped short changing fans (the 45mins included 2 walk offs so there was even less performance time than that).

you should think your self lucky for what they was. what? would yourather have seen The boss for 4&1/2 hrs or bono lip syncihing or alex turder...MES is just fuckin it man!! ha ha ah!!!

gizmoman - October 2, 2009 11:42 PM (GMT)
I would rather have seen The Fall for the hour and 15 minutes they were due to do! I know it's quality not quantity but any set less than an hour is taking the piss IMO.

Hexen hour - October 2, 2009 11:57 PM (GMT)
And that was top draw!! Mark bang on form, great Vocals. I thought The sound was good and the groupe fairly banged it out. Pat the trip dispenser, for fuck sake, I never thought I'd hear that again!! twas a bit short but twas a good set.

IanMcC - October 3, 2009 12:10 AM (GMT)
Best I've seen them since the 80's. I would rather have 45 minutes like this than 2 hours of what we have been having lately!!
The Nightingales were magnificent, but got no crowd response at all. After Pat Trip Dispenser, Daren should be proud, playing with the best 2 British bands around at the moment.
Oh, and first time Ive noticed that Eleni carries a Taser in her bag onstage. Has she ever had to use it, I wonder....

The Taser is for when MES reaches over from the back of the keyboards to 'play' them...

"The Taser
Is close to me..."

WHO WAS THE OTHER DRUMMER?

simpo - October 3, 2009 08:35 AM (GMT)
yeah, who was that other drummer?! Was he not at Windsor?

IanMcC - October 3, 2009 08:40 AM (GMT)
Well worth the 4.5 hour round trip. I had 2 local car parks programmed in to my Tom Tom. Both closed at 9pm. Found a local outdoor car park that was free after 5pm. Result.
Went straight to venue at about 7.35. I did not want to miss any of The Nightingales. I was disappointed to hear live music playing upon entering, but it was another support band. Their banner said EviiR. They were competent but ultimately boring. I ventured to the front barrier as the announced their final song, as I knew that The Nightingales would be on soon, what with the tight schedule and all. I stood right in front of Eleni's keyboard.
The Nightingales took to the stage to no welcome whatsoever. They did an abridged version of the recent set to be found on dime elsewhere. It was the first time I had seen the band in any form, having been a fan since hearing Idiot Strength a generation ago. I thought they were absolutely fantastic. The 3 musicians were all amazingly competent. Our very own daren on drums was very animated, and brought the set to life with his complex rhythms.
Robert Lloyd brooded around the stage, looking like a fat old version of a young Elvis Costello. He rightly berated the audience for being awful, and bit back at one shout of 'get off'. I am amazed that a Fall crowd could be so unappreciative of genius.
I had seen a piece of paper stating that The Fall were due on stage at 9.15. They did not hit the stage until 9.40. The backing music was awful metal, until just before the band appeared. Then a track from the new Fall album was played. I thought at this point that it would have been pretty cool to just play the new album and for the group not to appear.....
First time I have seen this line up. Very tight. Mark was in the best mood that I think I have ever seen him. I disagree with whoever said he was drunk. I think he was very sober, but was obviously limping a bit from recent injuries. Set list is as posted earlier

Over Over/ Chino/ Wolf Kidult Man/ Fall Sound/ Duped/ Sloppy Floor/ I'm Not From Bury/ Sparta/ Reformation// Pat TripDispenser!?/ Psykick Dancehall

Even Reformation sounded good to these ears, which I have always hated both live and recorded. I could see the set list at Eleni's feet, and could see that Pat Trip Dispenser was scheduled to be the final encore. What a thrill!
The band did not stick to the printed set list at all. I get the feeling they cherry picked tracks because of the curfew. No complaints from me with the choices, anyway.
I clocked that Daren's drumkit had been left assembled at the rear of the set, and sure enough he appeared on Pat Trip Dispenser. A song from the Golden Era, performed with a 2 drummer line up. More than anyone could have hoped.
Pat Trip was the obvious highlight, but if I had to pick one from the set it would be Ive Been Duped. Completely disagree with earlier posting regarding Eleni. I think her improved and confident input is what elevates the group above what they have been recently.
I left the Academy overjoyed, and looking forward to a new Fall album more than I have done for about a decade.

superjudge - October 3, 2009 10:47 AM (GMT)
one of the most enjoyable fall gigs i've ever been to. never even contemplated the length of the set!!!

the whole band looked like they were enjoying it...all were fantastic...especially el, the keyboards were fab!!!

me and bunny girl had a blast. more please :)

will post some photos when i get home

:applaud: :applaud:

Cracking night, great gig, good venue, good beer in vic and superb after gig party topped off with a greasy donner and a bloody expensive taxi home.

Well, if the promoter was any good at all they would have informed all performers of stage times in advance - if The Fall agreed to go on at 9.30 or whetever & didn't make it that means

1) The promoter wasn't organised enough
2) The Fall were unavoidably delayed (everyone has bad luck sometimes)
3) The Fall were lazy & didn't go onstage

With no evidence you shouldn't have a go at the promoter - it can be a hard task, y'know! Also, generally gig/club times are dictated by the venue, promoters putting on gigs have no control over these.

Furthermore, sad to say, but club nights pretty much fund love music, venues make more money out of them, so we have to put up with this osrt of thing.

I'm amazed that The Nightingales were poorly received - saw them in a small pub in Oxford a couple of years ahgo & was knocked out. It seems a perfect band for a Fall admirer

The only thing Faith No More mean to me is the fact that they usually come just before The Fall in CD racks. I will skip them even faster in future....

pomfob - October 3, 2009 12:18 PM (GMT)
So yes, it was a shorter set than we'd have liked, and I only saw the last 10 minutes of the Nightingales, which was a pity because they sounded really good, but otherwise, an excellent night.

The Fall look like they're actually enjoying themselves now, comfortable with each other and not scared of what MES is about to do. The 'unplugged' White Lightning kinda proves that. In years gone by theyd have just grumpily trooped off. I think all 4 musicians are bringing something to the table, so have to disagree with the criticisms of Elani.

This lighter mood only be a good thing...but probably means they'll all walk out mid-tour next year.

The after show thingy at Baby Jupiter was fun, too. Good to meet everyone (Picky, Chris Goodhead & our Australian traveller Ian esp). Cheers to GoJonnyGoGoGoGo for organising it.

And by gum, Pat Trip Dispenser!

mjungblu - October 3, 2009 12:25 PM (GMT)
short but great gig. the atmosphere was fine, the tracking order, the intermissions and the inspiration. everything well done!
pat trip dispenser was the conclusion and it was marvellous.
usually I do not care about doing the (really) old stuff except when they play really with heart. tonite it was like that. ta Daren!
psykick dancehall found its way into the present thanks to the heavy bass sound...

Elenis vocals great, especially the wolf. As her keys were great, I think that the mix was very fine (at least where I stood/danced).

Keiron - a metronome!

MES delivered a great set. Thanks for letting us sneaking into the new album. sounds amazing, not less!

Last encore was White Lightning (mute version). The group was very surprised to see so many people demanding another encore. A good moment to take memory pictures of the crowd...

Gales - great to see them live.
this was a stripped down version, cut short.

30 mins Gales plus 50 mins Fall makes 80 mins of my favourite groups.

Richard1961 - October 3, 2009 12:29 PM (GMT)
I'm not saying this to be the 'new poster who turns up, pees everybody off and then disappears', I think it's reasonable to point this out. There were what, maybe a thousand people there last night, possibly more? Most of those were NOT attending their 40th Fall gig, or even their 4th, like I was. Yeah, if you go up and down the UK every time they tour, catching every show, you can get worked up by the inclusion in the set list of one song, and the fact that they were only on stage for three quarters of an hour becomes irrelevant. There's always next time, eh? But if that was your first or second gig, and you've had to take a night off work to go see them, and paid £7.50 to park the car, plus another twelve (exceptionally reasonable, I might add) for a shirt and a quid seventy five for half a Diet Coke...

You see what I'm getting at?

simpo - October 3, 2009 12:35 PM (GMT)
I do, and i agree it's a total disgrace.

£7.50 to park the car??!! Are you made of money? Why not park behind Merrion Centre for nowt like everybody else?

You've missed out option 4, Smith was there on time and knew of the curfew but decided to go on late because it amuses him to cause conflict with the venue's management, hence his smiling throughout the last song as the power was switched off.
Both promoters have worked with him a lot over the years and so know he almost always goes on late, in a different venue (with no early curfew) this would have been a different gig. (you can argue that it wouldn't have been as good if you want but I think most of us would have preferred a few more songs).

Mark E. Smith, conducting the crowd. Fuck me.

Cracker of a night, much sharper than when I saw them in Manchester and the pre-gig snippet of the new album sounded great.

Also cheers to the folk who organised the Baby Jupiter shindig (do they post on here?) Had to duck out of it early, but great fun while I was there. If God did club nights etc.

I'm going to turn up to the next Manchester date I think.

Said it before, cock. Fall now come off stage in Leeds earlier than time they used to go on. ie When the pubs shut. Agree it was strange to see him not fucking about with other members' amps etc., £3:40 for a pint of Guinness. Cunts.

Actually, I do always park for free, but last time I was at The Academy when I came out I noticed that everybody else was parking in a pay and display. So I checked the prices, and it was £7.50 for five hours. If you don't know Leeds - or for that matter anywhere that you go and see a gig - you'll park in the first place you come across rather than end up on the Loop Road going back out of the city.

I went to Manchester a couple of years back and ended up paying thirteen quid in a multi-story. As I was walking to the venue I came across a place charging a fiver, but it was a bit late then.

BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT.

Brilliant.

The support album was choice, too.

Great 'disco' at the downstairs house thingy. Lots of fun. Lots of nice people too. And pac-man on a table!

I recommend you try doing some research on the internet about parking charges near the gig venue, or even public transport options. Might save a few quid next time.

I went to the Windsor gig and I was working in Staines. I was going to drive over and park, but I looked into train tickets and found out it was £4 return to Windsor and I could also have a few pints too.
