Title: COMMONALITIES QUIZ #2
Description: ...3 the hard way...

flickeringlexicon - August 21, 2009 07:02 AM (GMT)
Here's a new quiz for you all, just in time for Friday. This time around, you get three musical acts to work with. What do they have in common? This quiz might be easier than the last one: if you can find the link between two acts, the link to the third might become obvious... or maybe not.

I don't know which you will find easy or hard, so I just lumped them all in one category, but there is a bonus, 4-way question at the end...

What do these musicians/bands have in common?

1. Sugarcubes + Talking Heads + The Fall (spiring: They all have had married couples within the group: Chris & Tina, Mark & Eleni, Bragi & Einar ['civil union'] )

2. Chelsea + Devo + Jools Holland (Mere pseud.: Chelsea, Devo and Jools Holland all appeared in the film "Urgh! A Music War." )

3. King Crimson + Sammy Hagar + XTC (Mere pseud.: All have songs titled: "Red.")

4. Petula Clark + The Style Council + Blondie (New Profile Razor Unit: All have songs titled "Call Me.")

5. Jeff Lynne + The Beatles + Earth, Wind & Fire (Mere pseud.:: All have songs with 'September' in the title: Jeff Lynne: 'September Song', The Beatles: "September In The Rain" (from the Decca sessions), and Earth, Wind, & Fire: "September." )

6. The Cowsills + The Kinks + The Breeders (Mere pseud.: The Cowsills, The Kinks and The Breeders all have brothers or/and sisters as members.) FL sez: The Cowsills even had their Mom in the group! (the basis for The Partridge Family.) Imagine singing that line in "Hair" (a hit for The Cowsills): "Mary loved her son/Why don't my Mother love me?" with Mom standing right there...

7. Henry Rollins + Kirsty MacColl + R.E.M. (Totales Plebian: All have done Lou Reed songs. Rollins = "Move Right In" - MacColl = "Perfect Day" & R.E.M. = "There She Goes Again.")

8. Nine Inch Nails + Lou Reed + Antonio Carlos Jobim (DJAsh: They all have songs on the "Lost Highway" soundtrack.)

9. Broadcast + The Residents + UFO

10. The Darling Buds + Patti Smith + Nancy Wilson*

11. Cornelius + Paul McCartney + Paul Westerberg

12. The Jam + The Who + Link Wray (DJAsh: They all covered "Batman.")

13. The Beatles + Siouxsie And The Banshees + Elvis Presley (New Profile Razor Unit: All have done songs with either partial or entirely German lyrics. The Beatles, twice. 'Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand," and "Sie Lieb Dich." Not stopping at a German title, Siouxsie and the Banshees re-recorded their own "Mittageisen [Metal Postcard]" entirely in German. And Elvis, while stationed in Germany, discovered and later recorded a local hit: "Wooden Heart," which he sings partly in German, partly in Englisch. Third Reich n' Roll, indeed!)

14. The Olympics + Chris Isaak + Portishead (duckpin236: All have songs with "Western" in the title. Olympics: "Western Movies." Chris Isaak: "Western Stars" {also covered by k.d. lang}, and Portishead: "Western Eyes.")

BONUS, 4-WAY QUESTION:

15. Queen + Beck + Joni Mitchell + Joe Jackson (New Profile Razor Unit: All have done songs with "Sunday" in the title.

Sunday Papers – (Joe Jackson)
Sunday Sun – (Beck)
Sunny Sunday – (Joni Mitchell)
Lazing on a Sunday afternoon – (Queen) )

* The jazz singer, not the singer/guitarist from Heart.

POINTS:

Mere pseud.: 4
DJAsh: 2
duckpin236: 1
spiring: 1
New Profile Razor Unit: 3
Totales Plebian: 1

BONUS POINTS:
Mere pseud.: (for having all the Broadcast albums. Everybody should... )
DJAsh: (for bumping up this thread before it's forgotten completely ;) )
New Profile Razor Unit: (for setting one up for Mere pseud. to knock down.)

ie In Baby You're a Rich Man John Lennon supposedly sings "baby you're a rich fag Jew" as a pop at Brian Epstein, in Love in a Void Siouxsie notoriously sang "Too many Jews for my liking" (but only due to the shameful inadequacies of Britain's edukashun system - truly we are all to blame) and Elvis.......... dunno.

Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey, said Macartney

I'm wondering if 1 might be Einar from the Sugarcubes who is connected to the Fall via Ghostigital. Not sure how Talking Heads would come into it though. Oooh.It might be collaborations involving ghosts then - My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts?

duckpin236 - August 21, 2009 10:56 AM (GMT)
14 they each did a song with "western" in the title?

DJAsh - August 21, 2009 11:08 AM (GMT)

Alternatively it could be something to do with birthdays eg The Fall and The Sugarcubes have both recorded songs called Birthday, while David Byrne is too up his own arse to acknowledge that he ever has something as mundane as a (shudder) birthday. Something like that.

Gibbons hully gully
Oxaal hully gully too..."

2. Chelsea, Devo and Jools Holland all appeared in the film "Urgh! A Music War". Must have been more than 20 years since I saw it, so I'm not totally but almost sure.

Woo hoo! You got that one too. They are all in the film, but for some reason, Chelsea doesn't appear on the soundtrack album. I thought that would throw ya, ha ha...

duckpin236 - August 21, 2009 04:34 PM (GMT)
this is an example of an excellent question and a source of frustration for me: I own "...Music War", have watched it many times, and never would have made the connection: Good work

Ah! Well, that movie is pretty old now (but not as old as The Girl Can't Help It). UB40 and the Dead Kennedys also appear in the film, but not on the soundtrack. Either there wasn't enough room, or contract problems existed....

duckpin236 - August 21, 2009 04:40 PM (GMT)
# 6 - the three recorded songs with "Sunny" in the title?

duckpin236 - August 21, 2009 04:43 PM (GMT)
Lux Interior would throw "Hully Gully" into his live performances but not more than 4 bars worth, just the Hully Gully....always sounded great to hear it briefly

duckpin236 - August 21, 2009 04:47 PM (GMT)

4 They all had songs which were partly sung in French?

Fritter - August 21, 2009 05:13 PM (GMT)

5. Jeff Lynne + The Beatles + Earth, Wind & Fire

"Got To Get You Into My Life" - but not sure what Jeff Lynne has to do with it.
