Title: COMMONALITIES QUIZ
Description: (time) wasters unite...

flickeringlexicon - August 5, 2009 03:52 AM (GMT)
Commonalities Quiz: (for us common types)

I did this in the hope that it would be a little easier than the mind-melters usually posted here. I love quizzes, but I'm from the U.S., and haven't had the education most have had. So, name what these acts have in common, it could be song titles, band members, producers, or anything really… Enjoy!!

COMMONALITIES QUIZZ

EASY:

a. The Soft Machine & The Police (huh: Andy Summers played guitar in both groups.)

b. The Rolling Stones & Kirsty MacColl (DJAsh: Both have albums produced by Steve Lillywhite (MacColl was married to him as well) The Stones album in question is their worst-ever: "Dirty Work".)

c. XTC & The Pretenders (rainmaster: Both Pretenders and XTC had drummers whose surnames were Chambers.)

d. Cornershop & The Buzzcocks (rainmaster: both have songs with "shit" in the title. "Good Shit" - Cornershop, and "Oh Shit" - Buzzcocks.)

e. The Replacements & The Who (Mere Pseud.: both had records with male first names [Tim and Tommy].)

MEDIUM:

f. Led Zeppelin & Sid Vicious (Mere pseud.:They both covered Eddie Cochran's ""C'mon Everybody")

g. Jimi Hendrix & Cilla Black (New Profile Razor Unit: Both opened for The Monkees on their 1967 tour.)

h. The Breeders & Cibo Matto (inherant vowel-uh: both had music featured in Buffy the vampire slayer)

i. Sex Pistols & Blur (Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath: They both cover The Who's "Substitute.")

j. Shonen Knife & The Beatles* (New Profile Razor Unit:: They both cover The Shirelles' "Boys." In both cases, the drummer sings it...

DIFFICULT-ish:

k. Rank & File & Joni Mitchell (Mere pseud.: they both have songs called "Coyote.")

l. Nancy Sinatra & Björk (Mere pseud.: They both covered the Bond Theme : "You Only Live Twice." And Björk's is better!)

m. Thomas Dolby & Rick Wakeman (New Profile Razor Unit: Dolby and Wakeman have both done Ken Russell soundtracks. Wakeman did Lisztomania [And "Crimes Of Passion" as well.] Dolby did "Gothic".)

n. Martha & the Muffins & Bob Dylan (Mere pseud.: Both have albums produced by Daniel Lanois.)

o. Dread Zeppelin & The Attractions (rainmaster: both bands are fronted by guys named Elvis, neither of whom are the actual Elvis. Elvis Costello & "Tortelvis")

BONUS, TOOO EFFIN DIFFICULT?:

p. Dr. Jack Kervorkian & The Knack (rainmaster: 'Doug Fieger, singer with The Knack, was the brother of the Detroit attorney, Geoffrey Fieger, who represented Kervokian in some of his assisted suicide cases.' FL sez: The brothers look almost identical by the way, so when I turned on the T.V. one day and saw the singer for the Knack defending Kervorkian, I was surprised.... but it was just the brother, after all.)

q. The Fall & The Dukes Of Stratosphear (DJAsh: both have albums produced by John Leckie)

*Shonen Knife did a version of The Beatles' "Rain", but that's NOT what I'm looking for. I'm looking for an occasion where they behaved alike...

POINTS:

DJAsh: 2
huh: 1
Mere pseud.: 5
rainmaster: 4
New Profile Razor Unit: 3
Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath: 1
inherant vowel-uh: 1

(Bonus Points)

rainmaster
(for a better answer than the actual one)
DJAsh (for mentioning that Blur kicked Oasis' ass)
My Balloon (for mentioning Jubilee  )
Gene Vincents Amphetamine Breath (for mentioning the classic: "Dogs.")
New Profile Razor Unit (for, like RM, coming up with a better answer than the one I was looking for)
spiring (for a better answer than the actual one... I'm the wrong one to be doing quizzes!)
(?) (for helping inherant vowel-uh out)

DJAsh - August 5, 2009 10:30 AM (GMT)
Q. Is John Leckie

DJAsh - August 5, 2009 10:44 AM (GMT)
B Did Steve Lillywhite produce some latterday Stones album? ( He was married to KM)

duckpin236 - August 5, 2009 12:16 PM (GMT)
Nice quiz. I have to tell you though, you might think it's easy but I don't have a clue and could use several  Thanks for the work in putting it together.

No.1 is Andy Summers, but i can't think why, it just is, i think.

edit, sorry 'a.'

duckpin236 - August 5, 2009 12:43 PM (GMT)
The only thing I can think of is that the Rolling Stones(Brian) and Kirsty both met their ends in waterborne accidents.

DJAsh - August 5, 2009 03:09 PM (GMT)
C. Has Dave Gregory played with the Pretenders. Or Barry Andrews?

ooh, I hate clues, but it's not on an album... on reflection, (and a quick check of iTunes) that one should have been in the Extra-Friggin' Difficult category... :ohdear: I have to go to work, but if that question aint been solved by the time I return, I'll give it to RM, by default...

Yup! You are on a roll. Jocelyne Lanois was the Lanois who was actually IN M + M (on Bass); I don't know what relation she is to Daniel, but there has to be one.
