Title: Notebooks out, plagiarists
Description: Things the Fall have stolen

Hernandez Fiendish - July 21, 2004 08:32 PM (GMT)
MES's (often justified) ire about plagiarism of Fall stuff is well documented. Frat boy hobbyists Pavement should stump up, for one.

But isn't Elves just Now I Wanna Be Your Dog?

What else have the Fall "referenced" in this way?

bezenby2 - July 21, 2004 08:36 PM (GMT)
There's a section in the discography that's good for this kind of thing....

:D

Even your signature was nicked from a comic I believe....

(Then I nicked it from MES for a story I wrote so maybe I should just shut up)

bezenby2 - July 21, 2004 08:43 PM (GMT)
There should be another thread along this line I think....

Will start it now then watch it dive down the forum list and away into the distance....

Hernandez Fiendish - July 21, 2004 08:44 PM (GMT)
ta. very full list. but Funky Town and Gut of the Quantifier?

Big Chief Mango Chutney XIV - July 21, 2004 08:44 PM (GMT)
Not really relevant to this thread, but has anyone else noticed that the drum intro at the start of "Just Step S'ways" is almost identical to the drum intro on "I am the Ressurection" by The Stone Roses? It looks like the lads from Broadheath owe quite a debt to The Fall because "I am the Ressurection" is the last played song of the evening almost every time I go to an indie club!

Or am I imagining it?

Hernandez Fiendish - July 21, 2004 08:55 PM (GMT)

Same as regards my last post! Although the other thread wasn't started when I put said post up (I will move it). That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

repeater - July 22, 2004 05:56 AM (GMT)
the only thing that comes to mind is the riff from "Barmy" is also the riff from "Valerie" by the Monkees!!!
funny bit of plagiarism there...but well done :applaud: !!!

repeater - July 22, 2004 06:02 AM (GMT)
and i'd also add that some of the lyrics to "I Am Damo Suzuki" are actually damo's lyrics from...
"Oh Yeah" off Tago Mago :o !!

on edit: now that i've mentioned it..i went to listen...he also steals damo's vocal line entirely!
utter genius  !!!

gorillabat - July 22, 2004 07:07 AM (GMT)
I always thought "And This Day" was sort of the Falls' analog of "Sister Ray" by the Velvets.

Titles even have the same syllabic properties, and the manic overdriven organ pumping through the heart of both tracks.

Not really plagarism though.

wayneb - July 22, 2004 07:47 AM (GMT)
struck me the other day that the shouty bit in coutraflow sounds a lot like the shouty bit in p.i.l.'s careering...

thanasi - July 22, 2004 10:28 AM (GMT)
Rowche Rumble rips off about 20 Bo Diddley songs

R. Totale - July 22, 2004 10:49 AM (GMT)
New Big Prinz - Rock'n'Roll pt 2 (G. Glitter)

DJAsh - July 22, 2004 06:23 PM (GMT)
Edinburgh Man is dangerously similar to "Silver Dream Racer " by David Essex.

grgs - July 22, 2004 06:31 PM (GMT)
It was recently pointed out to me that "Athlete Cured" uses the same riff as "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You, Tonight" by Spinal Tap.

The Fall have stolen many hours of my time on this bloody great forum.

For that matter, "Shoulder Pads" is loaded with what Lou Reed used to call "ostrich guitar".

Ya can't tell Lou Reed from The Fall

Ya can't tell Lou Reed from The Fall

I'm waiting for the day that a song called 'MES Says' appears on a Fall album..

'MES Says,
"I've come to hate my body,
and all that it requires,
in this world.." '

Middle Class Rebel - July 22, 2004 07:23 PM (GMT)
MES Says - as he gets up off the floor
"You can hit me all you want to - you're still not in the band anymore"

usrlocal - July 22, 2004 08:05 PM (GMT)
'And MES Says, honey, you must think,
I'm some sort of Manchester fool,
Who doesn't know Lou Reed from Doug Yule..'

Middle Class Rebel - July 22, 2004 08:27 PM (GMT)
He's not afraid to drink
All the people call him the master
Slipped when drunk - now he's in plaster
But he's still gigging fine

bezenby2 - July 22, 2004 08:35 PM (GMT)
Was the phrase 'Totally Wired' not nicked from some jazz guy?

Joseph Holt - July 22, 2004 08:37 PM (GMT)
The riff in Borgouise Town is Sleeper's Nice Guy Eddie.

Nice Guy Eddie is "bouncier" I think. And Burgeouis Town is an VERY VERY old Leadbelly track... So Id say Sleeper are the plagarists then? But I love Sleeper so I don't care. I was noticing a lot of Sleepers lead guitar licks sounded like all Blues riffs when I was making a Sleeper Best Of CDR for my girlfriend! One song off Pleased To Meet you was a lot like Sister Ray too... But Im getting off topic...

Hernandez Fiendish - July 22, 2004 10:15 PM (GMT)
New Face In Hell nicks VU's What Goes On? riff

bezenby2 - July 22, 2004 10:21 PM (GMT)
That William Blake track off of the Unutterable was used for a BBC backing track at one point....

Middle Class Rebel - July 22, 2004 10:23 PM (GMT)
As I said on the Sparta FC thread. My Ex Classmates Kids - Sister Ray. And in fact a LOT of Fall songs use the same timing/rhythm as Sister Ray!

Middle Class Rebel - July 23, 2004 02:50 PM (GMT)
I still also maintain that the main riff of Sparta FC sounds like Link Wrays version of the Batman Theme :P

... just read the warning about double posting. Apologies coz this coulda gone into the above message...

I would class the Elves/I Wanna Be Your Dog thing and the likes as being in the blues / rock'n'roll tradition of theft - anyway it's such a simple riff that any riff-based rock band is likely to come up w/ something similar sooner or later. And the song itself is quite different in atmospher etc. Same applies for Athlete Cured.

SlangKing65 - July 23, 2004 05:47 PM (GMT)
I agree that Elves is an embarassing theft. And Damo Suzuki is a theft.

Beyond that, I can't come up with much theft, just influences. Certainly the VU influenced many tracks. As I said once here before, that great bass part in 2 X 4 is very influenced by the "Hair Pie" bass solo that Captain Beefheart's bass players opened most of his concerts with from 1970-1981.

Somebody mentioned Gary Glitter, the tune that realkly resembles "Rock and Roll" is "Glam Racket".

And Damo Suzuki is a theft.

Nah, if you put the music in the context of the title and the lyrics, it's not a theft but a tribute.

If they just used the music with completely different title and lyrics (i.e. no references to Can/Suzuki), *then* it would be theft.

A couple of weeks ago Bagrec posted something about the Groundhogs, I group I admired as a youth but had not heard in probably around 25 years…

Browsing in my local HMV the other day I came across a cheap ‘Best Of’ ‘hogs compilation and decided to see if they were as good as I thought they were so many years ago…it is actually really good and at several points I thought ‘Hey, this sounds a bit like the Fall!’ Until, that is I reached the track ‘Earth is Not Room Enough’ (taken from the ‘Who Will Save The World’ album, which I used to own at one time), the introduction to this doesn’t just sound like the Fall, it’s quite obvious that ‘Spoilt Victorian Child’ has been lifted note for note – guitar, bass line, drums the lot – from this introduction.

Now, I know MES is a bit of a fan of the Groundhogs and that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but this is about the most blatant piece of ‘borrowing’ by the Fall I’ve yet come across…not that I’m complaining mind, SVC is great song regardless…

The keyboard break in Way Round is the first bar of Inspector Clouseau's theme from the Pink Panther cartoons.
