wayneb - July 20, 2004 01:16 PM (GMT)
why are people grudgeful (lost in music version)

(free range close 2nd)

otherdave - July 20, 2004 01:43 PM (GMT)
Mmm... Thing, Zandra, Blood, Ed's/Pumpkin, Touch... I think it'd have to be Free range... for now... Touch maybe 2nd :)

Stephen - July 20, 2004 02:06 PM (GMT)
As far as I'm aware, 15 Ways / Hey! Student / The $500 Bottle Of Wine is the only single which entirely (and pointlessly) duplicates LP tracks.

gappy tooth - July 20, 2004 03:07 PM (GMT)
The Peel sessions EP is probably the best on paper, but isn't really a single like the othersm is it? In the sense of miniature entity or outrider for an LP; it's just an odd archive release (a very strange one!). Also, for the sake of being pedantic, the 12" & CDS versions of this actually had different tracks!

So I went for Telephone Thing 12", sort of randomly.

Stuie - July 20, 2004 05:43 PM (GMT)
I would hate to be without Calendar and Scareball - love both songs. And the live version of Old Gang is pretty good, too. So I'll go with that edition of Masquerade.

What gets in the way...

jane_from_occupied_europe - July 20, 2004 05:45 PM (GMT)
i went for the "chiselers" 7"... although i don't have a clue what the lyrics are about or what halifax may be... but it sounds pretty good and this is the only single i have from this period :)

Martin - July 20, 2004 05:48 PM (GMT)
Nobody understands the lyrics to Chiselers, so don't worry about that. Halifax is famous for a bank (used to be a buliding society). It has a football team which usually struggles in the lower reaches of the league. Probably a little above the level of Blyth Spartans.

That's unusual!

jane_from_occupied_europe - July 20, 2004 05:52 PM (GMT)
 hmmm not sure it's getting easier to understand, but i will have learnt sth at least, thanks

Susan vs Youthclub I found quite weak.

only redeeming feature is that it seems to be based on a storyline from neighbours which justifies its existance in my books...

Stephen - July 21, 2004 08:43 AM (GMT)
Really? Could you explain it to non-Neighbours fans?

R. Totale - July 21, 2004 08:48 AM (GMT)
Wahey! The newest is the best!! Sparta just beats Free Range in my book

well, a couple of years ago susan kennedy (currently estranged wife of karl kennedy, mother of widowed libby) lost her memory and thought she was 16 again. i can't remember how this happened exactly but she ended up at the school disco thinking she was actually still a pupil there rather than its head. it was only when she went to the toilet and saw her reflection in the mirror that the whole horrible truth sank in...it was actually a horrible storyline as karl had to win her heart all over again (only to throw it away again due to the lethal combination of a midlife crisis + the arrival of scheming (and much younger) izzy to the street)

(was unemployed for a while y'see n then found a job close enough to home to enable to be back at half 5 is my excuse, m'lud)

Yes, but you could have been catching up on Proust or listening to the Bay City Rollers.

aye. the (sad?) thing is that though i haven't watched it for a couple of months now coz i don't get back from work in time anymore, i still check the website once a week just to see what's happening (though i check the australian episodes nowadays instead of the english ones as seeing as i don't watch it anymore, i may as well not watch it a few months in advance i reckon...)

but it does make me laugh.... it is so very stupid..... i really enjoy a bit of stupidity (as u all know) & find this strangely cheering.... it makes me bounce about.... and gives me energy to do things i really don't want to.... :ohdear:

Stephen - March 17, 2005 01:50 PM (GMT)
Susan... is still one I struggle to like.

The Encrusted Green - March 17, 2005 10:19 PM (GMT)
where there is a record that has kimble and spoilt victorian child, then no other record gets a look-in. since the midlands mentality has decided to do old buildings in upholstery

fallfandave - March 17, 2005 10:30 PM (GMT)
i went for ed's babe... cos it has got this thing called a catchy tune... which is spat on ... but really it is hard to walk that catchy line and still sound original.

many would have voted for the other tracks too.

ditto. DIY!

Hugh McSheepshagger - March 18, 2005 04:41 PM (GMT)

"You'll never see me trying to raise Cain, you'll never see me wear a suit of green"
and
"but I'm city, born & bred, too many car fumes in my head"
are some of my favourite Fall lyrics.

So it's M5 for moi.

Agreed. I remember buying the 12 incher and playing it CONSTANTLY. Must have driven the neighbours barmy.

Vvillager - March 18, 2005 07:27 PM (GMT)
I've gone for Ed's Babe as well, as it's the only single that I bought in this period.

I was driving out of Preston once, and saw this record shop. I had a bit of time to kill, so I thought I would go have a nosey. Bloody Hell, Fall records! The only one that I didn't have was Ed's Babe 12", so I got it.

Turns out that this was Action Records. I went back today and got a couple more Fall CDs, Ege Bamyasi, and a parking ticket.

Gaz - March 18, 2005 07:33 PM (GMT)
Never bought a Fall single.... Dont buy singles in genral, realy....But i do own all of the above tracks and I'll have to give the last one the nod, if just for the ace Portugal Tour.

jesus! i LOVE this song but i can't believe thats where the lyrics came from. weird but hilarious. this makes the song even funnier now for me.

Gaz - March 20, 2005 05:38 PM (GMT)
Errrrr, How do you know MES has seen said episode of Neighbours?
Has he owned up to it?!!!

In combination, I like most behind the counter and cab driver. Though there are many other songs which I could count to my favourites, like butterflies 4 brains or don't take the pizza or masquerade or calendar or ivanhoe's two pence - it could have been masquerade, too. the decision was hard. but sometimes, you have to choose and to be tough.

Cleanville Tziabatz - April 3, 2005 04:33 AM (GMT)
I went Dredger.

Mark E Smith Made Me Cry - July 17, 2011 07:49 AM (GMT)
Dredger just beats Ed and Hurtz for me.

Free Range/Return/Dangerous/Everything Hurtz, is what I think I voted for without posting...

I wonder if it's worth doing a new poll to cover the more recent singles?

Probably.

I'm an expert on nothing but wasn't Victoria a single (?) and I'm guessing Hit The North comes under MES.

Ah, didn't know that, thanks! :)

EDIT: Looking at the years might have helped!

I'm not surprised I'm the first to vote for "15 Ways,' even though this poll is quite old. I wonder if a day will ever arrive where people realize just what Hanley's doing on this song and why it is so wonderful. Probably not....
