Title: The Arches, Glasgow
Description: Thursday, 30th April 2009

robsterio - April 30, 2009 11:55 PM (GMT)
Disappointing, very disappointing. Half the time in festivals you feel it is just a case of show up, do your allotted time slot and shove off.

josef - May 1, 2009 12:03 AM (GMT)
Sounds promising, do tell more...

littlest rebel - May 1, 2009 12:17 AM (GMT)
Not long back from the gig and it was in my opinion really good,i thought the sound was great (confirmed by the ringing in my ears) which i liked cos the sound in the ferry is'nt the greatest to be honest, though the arches is a different kind of venue B)

Good to see mark out the wheelchair,i cant remember the setlist song by song but they played strange town, wolf kidult man,one iv never heard,my door is never,50 year old man,iv been duped, and they played white lightening as an encore (mark singin offstage)

Really enjoyed it but to be honest i hope they play on a tour soon cause i basically paid £25 for a ticket to see the band play for 40 minutes, also the hinterland festival seemingly only sold about 1,odds of the 6,00 tickets .They are giving away tickets for free now :devil2:

Good crowd though very subdued compared to a ferry gig,the crowd did slowly disperse,my mate who has never seen the fall was really impressed with the band, who were solid,it was a good thing they played the festival though as the crowd was very different to normal fall gig, well from my experience anyway, heres hopin a few become fans now.

All in all it was quality but they would have played for at least another 30-40 mins on tour but no complaints about the gruppe.

I WAS PROVOKED!

A Consortium secret agent has made a statement as follows -

Strange town
Wolf kiddult man
New song or maybe 2 new songs, might have been Chicken George with a My Bloody Valentine tribute tacked on.
My Door
I've been duped
50 Year Old Man
Another new song - this one sounds excellent, not a clue what its called. There may have been a line about wolverines in it, or maybe not.

Only 1 encore - a longer than usual White Lightning.

So there you have it.

Probably the worst gig I have ever been to in my life. Shite, utter shite. At least it didn't last long.....

It can't have been as bad as a Style Council gig I was dragged to once?

Can it?

Crikey. That's a shame. But I'm sure it couldn't have been worse than a Queen gig I went to in 1975ish. We walked out cos of Brian May's eternal noodling. Oh, and I once heckled Crosby and Nash.

Mr_Pharmacist - May 1, 2009 10:00 AM (GMT)
It was an ok to good gig, not a great one. If it had been longer it may very well have been a very good gig.

The new songs sounded excellent. :applaud:

If that's the worst gig you've ever been to then you've been very lucky.

I was a bit tipsy when I posted that, sorry for the vehemence.

What I meant was it was the worst Fall gig I have been to (I've been to about 10 since 2006), well the worst since the Croyden walk-off. It was like, "show up, do the allotted 40mins, then we're off".

The nob twiddling is bearable in a half decent venue, but the Arches acoustics compounded it to unbearable proportions.

I suppose my real conclusion is that the Arches is a duff venue - why can't the Fall play somewhere like the ABC when they are in Glasgow...

Chicken George - lyrics sound great (perhaps a reference to the original George Bush perhaps), what about the tune?

8 Songs - tight set

I believe the Consortium's Northern correspondent recorded this. It should be made available once it has been through quality control at Consortium HQ.

Give the poor boy a chance.

I once said the same thing myself after a Brighton Concorde 2 gig in 2005. I too (I have to confess) was ‘off my fucking nut‘, only to realise a day later that I had witnessed something quite magical.

I even thought the Yanks were a pile of pants after I heard the first recording from the US tour.

‘When you wake up in the cold light of day, you realise The Fall can be better than when you were totally fucking shit-faced’

To quote Pam Ayres.

Or Tin Machine, that was true fucking torture. Surely no amount of dirge could completely eradicate any joy from the experience of David Bowie being three feet from your teenage fanface in a small club?

Yes it could.

Set list was as follows -

Strangetown
Wolk Kidult Man
Cowboy George
My Door
I've Been Duped
50 Year Old Man
Bury
off stage
White Lightning

There appears to have been some confusion with Bury being a new song.

But it is Bury.

The gig sounds like a Munsters goth Elana keyboard fest.

This phrase alone makes it sound rather excellent instead of the aforementioned 'worst gig ever'

I get worried about how much keyboard there is in the Fall, I'd prefer louder guitar and bass.

Don't worry. There's plenty of guitar.

In fact Pete's effects pedal board is so comprehensive these days, it takes 3 people to drag it onto the stage.

If you’ve downloaded the flac files with your torrent client, you’ll need to convert the flacs to .wav with db poweramp, which you can download for free. Have a look on the thread on the ‘buy sell’ area of this forum which has lots of details about this.

First you'll need to download this program which will open the .torrent file, and the gig will start downloading:

http://www.transmissionbt.com/

Once it's finished, you can play the .flac files in VLC:

transmission 1.42 - for the .torrent (the newer versions don’t work with your system.)
or
tomato torrent
or
bittorrent (go for the older version, f.e 4.4.1)

If I could just be the last person to review this gig (I've been busy, ok?), I can faithfully verify that it went beyond 'nice & loud' & into 'airplane coming into land on your head' territory. Hinterland as a whole was an excellent experience, great bands new and old all over the place. The Fall were not at their best, for various reasons.

The sound in the Arches is way, way too cranked up - the following night they even made nu-skiffle duo Slow Club sound thrashy. And before you say anything, I've seen My Bloody Valentine, I can handle loud in context.

MES clearly isn't right yet, either. He looked in pain all the time, not comfortable with the brace he's wearing. That wheelchair might have been useful for a few more weeks.

And yes, it was a damn short gig; there's always the argument about rather paying for 20 minutes of genius over 2 hours of mediocrity, but hell, I know they can do more (though re; the previous point, maybe MES physically couldn't).

Not the best I've seen then, but nowhere near the worst (probably the Cockpit in Leeds around 2002), and looking forward to the new LP & proper tour to accompany it.

Oh yeah, that third song in, Chicken George you say? It's an absolute beast :applaud:

Ah, I know what you mean. Camel was my first 'proper gig'. It was a standing venue, but all 150-ish of us sat down. Nice.

This was followed by Man and Procol Harum. Not exactly the stuff of dreams.
