Good news - I'm going to try and send you an SAE for Canada if that's OK - haven't found a decent mag shop yet.
Faust Banana - March 26, 2009 08:48 PM (GMT)
Do you have my mailing address, Stephen?
I'll happily contribute more to the next issue for you. I can do another 'Some Concerts I've Been To' piece or a random (music based) article.

How long are you in Canada?
Fritter - March 27, 2009 10:12 AM (GMT)
Until August - or maybe you could hang on to one if you can until then.
I will try and write something for Number 8 ("who is Number 1?"), but it is slightly wierd trying one's hand at writing for the first time and getting no feedback whatsoever from readers - not seeking empty praise here; even if it was just "This is self-indulgent crap, think about your readers" would help.
Anyway, I shall have another go - maybe something about synthesizers, or Canadian music.

I agree. Lots of people send a message to me saying something like 'Thanks for the mag. I enjoyed it.' This is nice, but not very helpful for the writers.
If anyone has liked or disliked anything in ICFQ, please post some kind of response in the relevant thread if you have time. It would mean a lot to all involved. Not fishing for compliments, here: all hate mail also gratefully received.

Got the issue today. Thanks, Stephen.
I'll give it a 'review' once I've read it properly.

Stephen: What do you think of The Fall?
Ari Up: I like it tropical all year round.
Profuse thanks to Stephen for sending me this. Issue seven is the best so far in my opinion.
Some highlights are
· All the stuff about fanzines. There’s three different articles looking at zines from various viewpoints. All fascinating. Makes me think I’ll write one of my own one day. I’ve been thinking that for a few years though. People like Stephen who break through the apathy barrier and actually do it are heroes who deserve our support and our applause!
· Very entertaining interview with Ari Up from The Slits. It’s good to know that she’s still alive and still approaching life from her own “atypical girl” perspective.
· Review of the Alice Cooper book. The idea of the very unlovely Alice Cooper “avoiding the unwanted affections of Raquel Welch” is a very strange concept for me to grasp. I imagine him in full stage gear (complete with snake) blushing and coyly turning away his face as the gorgeous pouting Ms Welch whispers romantic suggestions into his ear.
· Snow Monday (by Stephen?). Not about music or drugs. This is a beautifully written description of his bizarre journey to work on the day of the UKs heaviest snowfall for 18 years. I confess I stayed indoors that whole day watching TV.
· Superb article by David Hughes about the one live gig he performed with his band. A superb memoir of what was clearly a very important moment in his life. I would like to encourage ICFQ to continue printing the personal chronicles of people like David Hughes, Chris lemon and, of course, Stephen Fall in future issues.
The whole thing is a truly excellent read. I would definitely encourage the more inteligent and discriminating members of this forum to get hold of a copy. :applaud:

mine came today, thanks Stephen, will read it when kids are in bed.
So far; the enigmatic cover is a winner.
And that Frank Sidebottom needs telling off, he's very naughty. He can't have little frank being just cardboard and owner of cats you know.
well done.
Ari Up was on Spicks & Specks, Aus music show; she is obviously a pfennig short of a mark!
Divvey - April 1, 2009 08:52 AM (GMT)
How pleased I am to see the winner of the comp!
MJ was the man who got me into trading Fall boots; started me off with a copy of a show I saw in Frankfurt in 93 as well as some others.
I need an address & I'll send the disc sealed & unpirated as a matter of urgency.
Hope you like it Michael.
Faust Banana - April 1, 2009 01:39 PM (GMT)
I found that article about the train journey to be hilarious. Especially the last line, the image of some skirt wearing (possibly drunken) fella crying into the snow didn't half make me laugh.
Didn't enjoy the Ari Up interview too much - Perhaps the language barrier was a problem but she didn't give much in the way of answers. Or is that her style?
Does Frank Sidebottom have papier mache fingers too? His typing/spelling would attest to that!
The rest of it is spot on. The '...Bucks Fizz...' piece is very well written.
Oh, and the Pet Shop Boys review got me into a spot of trouble. I was on the phone in work while some idiot was blathering on at me. As he did I read that review and said "Hahaha fucking hell." Cue more blathering.
Overall, great magazine, Stephen. I look forward to contributing further.
Fritter - April 2, 2009 11:53 AM (GMT)
I was delighted to get what the lovely woman in the office called "Royal Mail, is it from the Queen?" yesterday. I have to make it last as there seems to be a big delay in getting music magazines over here in the colonies, so I'll give feedback as I get through it if that's OK.
First impression - this is the ICFQ cover equivalent of Led Zeppelin IV, great redesign and pregnant with runic mysticism.
Skimmed the contents, so each new page is a surprise.
Jane Smith looks friendly, quick-witted and rather gorgeous and her Palace Of Riffs is full of treats (never heard of Belbury Poly or LiLiPUt, but will try and seek them out)- an excellent addition to the team.
Then, wow - an interview with Ari Up? Can't wait till I get home tonight.
Fritter - April 4, 2009 03:56 PM (GMT)
So the Ari Up interview was a bit of a scattergun affair, always tricky to know what to do with transcribing English as a second language - or maybe it's conducting interviews via email: are the questions sent out in one go (therefore leading to the possibility of the subject knocking out the answers without much thought, whilst waiting for the kettle to boil), or would it be better to try and have a more drawn out conversation about fewer subjects? Of course the Interviewee's time might be limited though, so I dunno. I shall try and interview someone myself and see if it makes for better reading.
"Where Were You When Bucks Fizz Won The Eurovision Song Contest" was a great story, personal without falling into the trap of being a rambling story about me,me,me (guilty) and it evoked the atmosphere of the time and place brilliantly with phrases like "tattoo of coal" and "over 50, (they) looked like they'd settle an argument outside".
"Fanzines" - I was excited to see Des Boat's byline and he did it again. Initially I appreciated the irony of writing about fanzines in a fanzine (like recording a documentary about cassettes on a cassette), but then it veered off into a fantastic dreamlike thing -with a laugh-out-loud final sentence.
That's all the bedtime reading I've had time for this week...

wow, it is a honour to make the competition
it will be a pleasure to listen to the prize.
btw as I completed the sentence I knew that this is good.
cheers Divvey and ICFQ

In this instance the interview was done by e-mail. Ari Up's replies are exactly as I received them: all the odd grammar, spaces, lack of punctuation and so on are hers. But I really liked the way she came across.

Today, I happened to be "hanging out" with Nigel Godrich and asked him to do an interview about something other than What's It Like To Work With Sodding Radiohead for ICFQ, but he sidestepped it rather neatly. Sorry boss, that's one that got away...

Time for a poll on The Great Nigels In Rock. (Surely the least Rock name of all).
Divvey - April 7, 2009 10:58 AM (GMT)
whatever happened to Obligatory Nigel? posted for a while, won a comp then vanished???
Davey B - April 7, 2009 11:53 AM (GMT)
Front and back cover design is excellent this issue. I thought having the word FREE in big letters on previous issues lowered the tone a little.
Did Divvey not form another band after his triumph on the day the Bucks Fizz won Eurovision?
I'm very happy that Frank Sidebottom and I Ludicrous are still going strong.
A fine publication. :applaud:

Grease For Roads - April 7, 2009 07:08 PM (GMT)
I've just read it from cover to cover at GFR Jnr's karate class. There's not a dud in it. There's drinking, golf, Buck's Fizz, Richard 'God' Thompson, and stuff about other fanzines. There's nothing not to like. I have only one slight quibble: where's Newbug? I think that Zoot's got a lot to answer for what with ripping off his bank account and everything.

a sort of Felt type thing. 2 guitars.

The I, Ludicrous interview really worked - they obviously took a bit of time and put a bit of thought into it - they seem excellent blokes and I would now like to track down their music which I haven't heard since they were played on the Peel show.

yes, I like it, Jungle Blues , it comes from the heart,
never thought that you have a New Melbourne down there :)
All ten tracks are great,
Jailhouse Blues was my favorite during the first listen.
Cheers!

Fair point. In fact, I am going to have to start charging for issues 8 and beyond. There is only so much money I can afford to lose on this. The price will be to cover my costs only, and ICFQ will not be produced for profit.
Of course, any contributor whose work is featured in an issue will get a copy of that issue for free. Hopefully, this is also an incentive to write something for a future issue.
When the next issue is printed I will give details re: payment options etc.
