Title: Your Fall listening
Description: What Fall did you play last?

Stephen - July 13, 2004 07:44 AM (GMT)
What's the last thing you played by The Fall? And what did you think of it?

Today, I woke myself up with I Wake Up In The City. Fantastic!

I can't think of a better song to start your day to. Smokers, in your pre-1st-ciggy-of-the-day, lung-encrusted state: you can even cough-along-with-MES!

Spooky. I actually did today. Not from smoking (I don't), but because I have a cold.

So what's the last Fall thing you listened to?

My Ex-Classmates Kids, B-Side of "new" single, live in Cologne. I think it's a strong performance, but haven't heard many opinions on it, as all the attention has been on the different version of Sparta, the Portugal hidden track and the video.

Seems to be an immensely popular track, that.

Fall songs to wake up with:

Dr Buck Letter....

Couldn't get Ahead...

Copped it....

Room to Live at the moment.
Hadn't heard 'Solicitor in Studio' for years. That and 'Joker Hysterical Face' rumble along nicely.
I also needed reminding just how bad 'Papal Visit' is.

Papal Visit is supposed to be similar to Blue Bag by Can. I haven't heard this song. How similar is it?

Stephen - July 13, 2004 12:54 PM (GMT)
Not very, I'd say. Although maybe in terms of atmosphere/style.

So you shouldn't believe all you read in the ripped-off section in the discography. Is there other stuff there which you don't agree with?

I'd say you could probably see a connection with every track, however small. But only some of them are actual rip-offs. Some must be co-incidence. And I'm still convinced that Dr. Buck's Letter = Joni M's The Jungle Line. Mick Middles book even says that Mark used to listen to The Hissing Of Summer Lawns – the album the song features on.

Where is Mick now? Did we scare him off?

Code Selfish

When it came out I didn't like all the electronics.

To me most Fall albums sound best about 3yrs after their release. Guess I should cue up Unutterable

Listened to Levitate just over a week ago. Still intriguing.

My wife had me put it on again on Fri, but she got bored half way thru (again).

mantpl - July 13, 2004 02:35 PM (GMT)
My wife only likes a few tracks like Victoria and Edinburgh Man. I wouldn't get away with playing Levitate if she was in the same room :o . I tried Hex once..but no go

still maintain that jaw bone & the air rifle is the "riff" from run rabbit run (traditional?!) but see it hasn't made the list...

Listened to all of Infotainment last night. It didn't do much for me. Oh well...

I have been listening to "Live in Nottingham '92" for the last couple of days. Bought it at York on Sunday; and very good it is too (though I really brought my money for a 'Lie Dream of A Casino Soul' T-shirt, but they weren't on sale). I really need to get more early nineties Fall albums, cos this is the era I know virtually nothing about. I have almost everything (including most of the live albums) up to and including Bend Sinister; and then the last three albums as well (with the last couple of singles). But in between I only have Extricate and Code: Selfish... which is a bit of a poor effort on my part really. I have a few compilations as well from these periods, but they don't really count do they? Anyway, 'tis a good album after my first three or four listens. I am starting to appreciate more of the Code: Selftish songs that I had previously thought of as average at best. And Big New Prinz is the dog's proverbials too!

heavilycoveredinslime - July 13, 2004 05:19 PM (GMT)
Listened to The Unutterable and Levitate both one and a half times through, last night. Mostly because I couldn't be arsed to change what was playing.

Probably would have been PBL before them, at some point recently.

The N.W.R.A. (from the riot torn streets of manchester - version)...again and again

papal visit is quite similar to an arto/neto song (can't remember the title) which was featured on the NY no wave compilation... at least i think so, from what i remember of this song (i mean, the arto/neto one... i really can't talk today, it's bugging me, just have to add brackets everywhere to make things clearer)

PORTUGAL. I just put it on a mix tape for a friend to keep her company on her long drive to work.

Yesterday I listened to 'Paint Work' on the way to campus. Hadn't heard it in years, what a brilliant track!

Bought the US version of The New Fall LP when it came out, and I picked up the import expanded version of Grotesque a couple of weeks ago, so that's what I've been playing constantly.

RNFLP for me. I listen to the recent stuff much more than the old stuff these days and this wasn't the case for me in much of the 90's but since LUS they haven't put a step wrong in my opinion.

Today I have mostly been listening to Room To Live (Undilutable Slang Truth) – what a great album, even if no one voted for it in the 'best album' poll...
